"Pelican do it to us every time: they’ve been firing off a non-stop barrage of can’t-miss albums, EPs and splits almost every year for the past decade, and none of them have been anything short of mesmerizing.
So why should 2014 be any different? On the heels of 2013’s full-length Forever Becoming comes The Cliff EP, featuring three vocal-driven (!) re-imaginings of “The Cliff” — a Forever Becoming highlight — plus one brand new song. OK, so technically it’s coming out in 2015 (February 24th, to be exact), but who’s counting?
Pelican have assembled an all-star team of remix artists to re-jigger “The Cliff” for the new EP: Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu), Aaron Harris and Bryant Clifford Meyer of ISIS/Palms, and, for only the second time in their fourteen year career, vocals, courtesy of Allen Epley (Shiner, The Life and Times). Epley also owns the “first time in their fourteen year career” vocal credit: he sang on “Final Breath” from 2009’s What We All Come To Need.
Stream the track below. The Cliff EP comes out February 24th via Southern Lord."
Awesome, can't wait to scope this. I liked his vocals on those two songs on that older album of there's, but prefer instrumental pelican overall lol

I haven't listened to those dudes since like 2008 when I remember them only having like 1 album and 1 EP. Saw them live with Isis too and it was a great show. Gonna have to scope the other stuff.

It sounds like a bunch of Mastodon verses (or interludes) on repeat to me. This genre is just so stale. I haven't heard anything that has really blown me away since Baroness Red album.

I don't hear even a vague semblance to mastodon
Sounds like you haven't listened to Intronaut yet if you need some blowing away

interesting concept, as my band used to do vocals (me) and then we decided to stop, with the option to do again in the future. vocals never really clicked so far for us, so we're running with it until either some do, or we're staying instrumental. there was an interesting interview with bob from TAAS/Russian circles the other day about the "ceiling" that may or may not exist for instrumental bands. he made the point i always make, which is basically if im touring at club level, im happy. i would love to get to that level and stay there consistently. thats perfect.

Put on Leviathan. Seabeast, Megalodon, and Hearts Alive. Its like they take the clean and mellow parts of Mastodon songs and just put them on repeat.

I keep hearing you fools say this but its quite obvious neither of you know what the fuck you're talking about. I'll just chalk it up to poverty skills.

Now I'll readily admit to this.
But no, you still smoked some crack laced weed or something.

Clean arpeggiated chords all evoking the same feel. Everybody in that style is doing it.
After 10 years of listening to this style it just all the sounds the same to me though.

Yeah, I gotta stick with you on this.
I suppose Mastodon does that a lil bit in a few of their songs, but a lot of bands do and there's about 5 dozen other bands I'd say first before Mastodon.
If you're bored with the style I suppose I could see it sounding the same. Maybe.

Fuck am I talking to a brick wall? Go back and read what I said. Note the emphasis on the "clean interludes" part.

I know you said that, but when I think Mastodon the "clean interludes" are about the last thing I think of.
Which is why I'm still confused why they come to your Texan mind!
This could also be cause every band even remotely associated with the genre somehow gets compared to mastadon and I don't know why.

Vocals ruined it for me. Also, if you are going to name your band after a bird, at least pick a fucking owl.

I was curious as to what band took the name Owl off the market... and it appears there's two of them. One is worth of it, the other is not. I'll let you decide which is which.

Just "Owl" is too simple though... you need to get into the species and shit..
doom: The Great Horned ambient: The Great Gray country: The Barn Owls R&B: Snowy
