Better guitar tone?
better production?
better album?


Two of my all time favorite albums and they both happen to have been released the same year, 1987.

Its hard to say that anyone had a better "rock" tone than Slash back then but damn how LUSH do the guitars sound on Hysteria? Its like there is this wall of chorus and post production they hit and didn't go past and kept it sounding organic. Im absolutely in love with both tones. Im going to give the nod to Slash and Izzy only because jesus he was using one of the most famous amps of all time, the 1959T Caswell amp is like something out of Greek mythology at this point.

Im going to give the production to Hysteria. The drums are present and both the snare and the kick deliver thru the mix. The bass lines are heard well and the guitars are gorgeous. The backing vox are just fantastic on the entire album.
Appetite has some really nice production and it stays raunchy while having everything neatly placed which Im sure is super hard to do.

Hysteria gets my vote for better album by a small margin only because every song was a hit and I just find the music more memorable even after 27 years. Not to say that AFD isn't a great album and the songs aren't memorable, hysteria just gets me everytime.

Don't really care for either album, but Slash's tone wins.

Ape tit wins based on Night Train alone.

Hysteria sucks based on the Sugar song alone, but there's definitely much more suck to be gleaned from that record.

If your are gonna pick a Def Lep album for guitar tone, gotta go with High N Dry.

I hated both equally. Way too much vomit-inducing over production on Def Leppard and Axl's voice has always driven me nuts. I realize I am in the minority on that one.

Having been right in the midst of swinging into full-blown rock dude at the time, they both have their pluses, but knowing a bit about each of them makes it feel like any comparison is just too out-three to really hold much weight. Appetite was so raw that it almost has the feeling at points that the producer set the mix and went to have a joint, a rub and tug and a meal while the band played the album. Meanwhile, Hysteria has songs where they actually played every note separately, even in chords, and then put it together in the mix. Sure it ended up being a huge hit, but was it the songs, or the production?

Appetite wins on all counts if you're just talking straight up rock and roll. Hysteria wins if you're talking pop appeal because it was all-in-all a very safe album. Moms and dads would buy that album. Kids would sneak Appetite into the house and hope mom didn't catch them with it. Songs like My Michelle and Night Train weren't exactly family function friendly.

Good to see someone else likes the tones on this album.

I saw them a few times on this tour (opening for Ozzy/Randy). It was while Pete Willis was still in the band, the drummer still had both arms & Joe Elliot had brown hair. The best period in the history of the band IMHO. They were totally wasted but played perfectly, and had great live tone.

As much as I HATE GnR and any Ded Leppard after Pyromania, I did like the first two Lep albums - especially this track

High n Dry was one of the earliest cassettes i ever had. That and VH 1984 from what i remember. So, i dig me some early Def Leppard, but really not much on Hysteria. Sidenote- The production was largely triggered drums and basically DI guitars using the Rockman. Which actually was an awesome amp. I remember when i first started playing guitar, one of the guys at the music store let me play thru his headphone Rockman amp he used for teaching. and my 9yo self thought it was the greatest sound ever. I wanted to take lessons from him! Lol. But my mom said, No! Haha. I guess that entry level Cort guitar and Gorilla amp used up the available funds..

Annnnyway, Appetite was one of those albums that changed how i looked at music. Especially since i had just started playing guitar at this point.. I remember getting it on Christmas and listening thru my also brand new Sony Walkman and hearing "Its so Easy". I mean, all the usage of the word Fuck(ing) had a profound impact on me! Lol.. It definitely took me from my earliest exposure to rock/metal of Ratt, Cinderella, VH(Which was prolly beyond me at that time!) and ratcheted it up a notch. I almost immediately started getting into the harder stuff like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth , destruction.. Total gateway album for me back in 87/88..

Appetite wins by mile, I love that album still all these year later and it still sounds faily fresh.

Ha, I used to play Wasted in my cover band ages ago. loved that song. I agree 1 billion percent, anything after Pyromania is pure
