The amp that got away...?

'Kay, so, several years ago, I owned a Budda Superdrive 18 combo. But I only owned it for about a week and a half. Decided almost instantly that it "wasn't for me," partly because it didn't sound exactly like I expected it to out of the box, and partly I think out of buyer's remorse. So I moved it on quickly, without even trying a tube swap, much less a different speaker.

It has haunted me ever since, lol!

Now that I have my Plexi, I'm realizing my tastes have changed. Back when I tried the Budda, my Trace Elliot Speed Twin was the end-all-be-all of tone for me, and the Budda did *not* sound like that, natch. But the Plexi has pretty much demolished my love for the Speed Twin (which is, fingers crossed, about to be sold ~ something I couldn't have imagined doing back in the day).

So I'm selling off my other amps and wanting to pick up a good 1x12 combo for portability & light gigging ... and I'm wondering if now I shouldn't give the Budda a second chance.

What says GAB ~ is I is nutz, or is I is not? :idk:

Tremoverb half stack. Bought it new back in 1995 I believe. Sold it to help out my now ex-wife before we were married. :hmm:

:D

Speaking of which, didn't some of them have problems with one channel bleeding into the other? Is that fixable?

now that you mention it, mine had that issue. Hold off until a black 2554 shows up. It will happen in this economy and for a good price.

I sold a mesa studio pre to buy the mak4. Should have kept it and saved for it. That studio had a sweet lead tone.

Oh well

I would say my Superlead. But that thing was too much anyway. I used to jump the channels, dime both of them, walk into the hallway and close the door.

Oh my holy christ was it massive. Talk about shaking the foundation.

But I'm all "Inigo Montoya" ("I hate waiting...")

I was just wondering if folks thought the Budda would be closer enough to where I'm at tonally these days to be worth another try, gnome sane?

I remember a thread years ago on the old forum where a guy was complaining that whenever he played his 100 Plexi, his walls would shake, & asking for advice.

First post? "Get better walls."

True story. :)

That's too funny. It really was a beast. I traded it for my Silverface Twin that collects dust now.

My DSL40c is rendering my other amps useless.

Yeah, I love it. I just popped a trio of vintage PentaLabs 12AX7s' in it. Along with a RCA12AT7 in the PI. Sounds even better now. Admitedlly, it needs a speaker swap for something darker. The 70/80 runs way too bright. The cleans are just gorgous to me. Then I slam it with a boost into a Rat and it's sonic spooge time.

Dig. You ever use the amp's od channel?

Actually, it's ok. I'm waiting a while before I do the whatever mod to it. I think it's the C19 mod. Otherwise, it is a little stiff. Reminds me of my JCM800 2204 before I clipped the bright cap. Strangely, I've always heard you never buy a Marshall for the clean tones. But that's exactly what I've grown to absolutely love.

Along with raping those cleans with pedals.

It's definitely worth a trip to the music store with your favorite fiddle and a couple pedals.

Yeah, you're nutz!

j/k...

It sounds like you need to re-try a Buddha, but first impressions are usually right, so you prolly wouldn't like it again.

If you're digging your plexi, then a Marshall combo is the thing you need!

Marshall Cleans?

superbass specs W KT88's :-bd

lowering the Negative Feedback resistor helps with clean toans too.

A SuperBass is sort of what my SuperLead was, crushing loud and deadly? Right?

I'll be messing with the power tubes the DSL in the near future. Probably 6CA7s' since I have a older pair in my Bassmaster. Then maybe KT77s'. As I mentioned, Ithink I've got the preamp set for a long while.

Now, if I can get this guy to accept my offer on his Mesa 50 Caliber+, I'll have the 6L6 thing covered in spades too.

I couldn't wait to get rid of my JVM. Just did not like that amp.

My very first tube amp was an Ampeg Reverberocket reissue. I had no idea what I was doing and sold it shortly there after, thinking it was too quiet, due to the terrible Crate cab I was using.

Eventually (12 years later) I bought a combo version. It was good, but not great and I eventually sold it as well. At least my curiosity was satisfied.

The one amp that I think of in this vein is the Superdrive 80 I owned several years ago. Wish I still had that amp. Actually, if I found one used for sale I'd probably buy it today.

A Superbass is just a Superlead, With V1 wired up a bit different, and a few caps & resistors that are of a different value.

Basically just smoothed out on the top, and a bit fatter in the bottom end. Alot of folks cant tell much difference.
