As you'd expect this is a place to discuss anything Tolkien. It can be anything you like (This is no place for haters

). Poetry, Silmarillion, LOTRs, The Hobbit, etc. All of the legendarium is welcome (including the films).

I enjoyed the Hobbit movie. I've started reading the books. Finished the Hobbit and I'm about 1/3 through the Fellowship. Big Tolkien fan here.

1/3 of the way through the book. Which means you've made it about ten minutes into the movie, amirite? I didn't read the LOTR trilogy until last year, and was absolutely ASTOUNDED at how much content that was there that never made it into the movies. Possibly my favorite series I've read thus far. Super epic.
I know there are hobbit movies still to come, so I don't want to spoil it for anyone with details, but while I thoroughly enjoyed The Hobbit, I felt it had the single most anti-climactic ending I've EVER read.

read all the books although i find his style to be rather dated and not easy to read. just got the Hobbit blu-ray which looks amazing. the movie was great as well. no big shock. love the Led Zeppelin song Ramble On which of course was inspired by Tolkien.

I don't tend to have a problem with that, most authors I read are dead. I find a lot of the older stuff more interesting than current material. I do like some authors around now, but the older ones tend to do it for me. I guess I'm just an old soul.

There's a couple of other Tolkien references in Zep tunes.
The Battle of Evermore has the line 'the ringwraiths are out in black...ride hoooomme'
Misty Mountain Hop--no explanation needed
Indirectly, Bron-y-Aur stomp. The song was about Plant's dog named Strider. Bron-y-Aur also translates from Welsh to 'breasts of gold'. Not that that's specific Tolkeinian, but he was also a Celtic scholar and drew heavily on Celtic (and Norse) mythology for his stories. He also drew on the same Norse myths that Wagner did for his 'Ring Cycle'. There's some seriously evil music if you're in the mood.
I'm a pretty big Tolkien geek. I read the trilogy every year; I think I've probably read it about 8 times at this point.

I've really, really tried to get into the hobbit. I really tried, but I can't just invest emotionally in those characters, it just doesn't seem to resonate emotionally like LOTR trilogy did. I've read the book and it was so dragged out and uninteresting.

Actually, i feel the exact opposite! I am pretty amazed that I can care so much about so many "main" characters. Doesn't feel like a 3 hour movie to me at all. But I'm old.

Morgoth from Silmarillion, because those characters are the most epic in the LOTR universe. He's the one who created the Balrogs, and Sauron is his henchman, for those who haven't read it.

I would probably say Gandalf, but Aragorn too.
In a way, I really like Galadriel, but I can't pinpoint a reason why.....guess I am just strange like that.
I was reading the Fellowship of the Ring again before our merch guy left, and stuck me with all the driving duties. I read it right when the movie first came out, but I was like 12 then...

I think I appreciated Galadriel more after reading the Silmarillion. Although she is a cool and important character; I felt I understood more about what she is from reading the Sil.
