Dude, you're going full bore into an extreme genre of shred that is outdated as fuck.

Try some Satriani. Here...

That is an excellent description.

While I can appreciate the dedication to your craft to get to the ability to shred like that, I don't want to listen to it pretty much ever.

So, total respect to the ability, but yeah, I'll pass on actually listening to it.

Saying shred sucks because Yngwie is like saying food sucks because McDonalds.

cool, I hope you do. Newer Satriani is a bit different from older Satriani. It still sounds like him but he's a lot less in to "shred" than he used to be. He's more into writing vocal melodies on the guitar lately. But this particular track is the most aggressive track off his latest album, and one of my all time favorite Satriani tracks.

^That

I like McDonalds from time to time :idk: I don't think anyone coming up in the 90s is really the target demographic for shred; no matter what decade it was released.
This is a favorite of mine paying tribute to the donut eater in question:

Furthermore

I dig Satriani as well. His first 2 cds were excellent. I kind of fell away from him as I gravitated towards the heavy stuff back in the day. This is one of my faves from then:

He did moody stuff great as well:

Yeah, to me Satriani is the ultimate guitar hero. Plenty of his stuff is cheesy guitar wanker, and a bit boring. But there is TONS more, vast majority of his stuff that is just rip roarin' rock and roll. He never went full overboard shred, like Vai and so many others. There is always a cohesiveness and story to be told in his pieces even though it's 100% guitar melody. Too many shred guys forget to write a melody that you can sing with the human voice. That's why to me Satriani will never be beat. He knows what makes a song memorable. The human voice. Without that one relate-able element it's bound to be forgotten.

Plus his blues shred licks are like the next level of Hendrix. Don't flame me, but yeah. I'm pretty sure Hendrix would be nodding at Satriani like "fuck yeah!"

EDIT: for example of PERFECT guitar melody in a rock format

Satriani is good cause he can bring it down home. Not a lot of shredders can do that.

I totally agree. I can only handle shred when it has a typical song format. Verse, bridge, chorus, back to verse, etc....

I really don't care if you can play fast or not. for me power and groove are much more important.

At what point do riffs become shred though? That's the question, imo.

Shred are usually single line melodies played very fast. Riffs typically have chording going on. That's my take.

I like some Racer X but that's cause I find Gilbert's style fun and musical. Still, as much as I love Gilbert I can only take 2 or 3 songs before I'm pretty much "Yup, freaking amazing" and completely ready to listen to something else.

Read this reply on my way home and had a good laugh as it was designed to anger people  Blasphemy is necessary from time to time :) SRV was an awesome player but I don't want to sit and listen to him. To be honest, I feel the same way about most blues music. I appreciate the talent but I like a little more energy in what I listen to.

I agree with you. I can make it a full cd but then I have to switch gears into something else

I've been pretty much done with shred for several years now. I liked all the guys mentioned here at some point but they all peaked at least 20 or even 30 years ago and I was there to live through that period. Nowadays, it is more like a party that was really fun and awesome but it's 5 A.M. now and I want to go home so let's just stop.

I wouldn't mind seeing all these guys retiring now.

the SRV thing, i should add, is ESPECIALLY annoying when its playing in the background. theres a time and a place for stevie, of course, dude was amazing. and when actually engaged listening to it its not bad, but in the background.....holy crap its like listening to someone tuning perpetually.
