Can anyone enlighten me about these?

Are they still relevant?

How is it similar or different than a JMP-1?

They sound great, but time is starting to age them to the point of needing repairs.

I love mine, but I would actually recommend something newer. Vintage, digitally-controlled rack gear starts failing at an alarming rate after 25 years, IME.

I have a number of iffy pieces, now. :(

The MP-1 sounds better than the JMP-1, plus it's cheaper.

JMP-1 = 4 modes.

MP-1 = 3 modes

they were super hot in the later 80's, lots o people used them(including me). I'd say they're still relevant if you dig tones from that era. single rack-space, MIDI programmable, two 12ax7 tubes, only thing I didn't like about it was lack of knobs on front panel, hated those push button things.

What's something new that is comparable?

how do they sound? Absolutely killer. LOVED the one I had.

I never could use it live, though, because no matter how many times I sent it in for repair, it would at random times start jumping around to different presets. I couldn't rely on it. Sad, because paired with my Marshall 9005, IT. WAS. SEXY.

Don't think there is.
The Triaxis is sorta similar in the user panel, but not in sound.

Similar new stuff = JMP-1

Triaxis = one of my favorite preamps ever. True, it doesn't really sound like an MP-1, but it sounds just as good, and will accomplish the same goals. There are a few tricks though. 1. Read the manual. 2. good power amp. 3. Go easy on the "dynamic voice control". If it still sounds too "middy", use an external eq. Those ch2 mark modes are KILLER, plus the clean is stellar.

I busted out my old rack set up with MP-1 yesterday and forgot how bad ass it sounds.

They are so cheap you really can't go wrong in picking one up and giving it a try.

Not only that, but a lot of the parts that are failing are no longer in production.

They do sound great though.

I got to the MP-1 a little late. Picked one up for dirt cheap a few years after they went out of business. Couldn't believe I waited so long to get one. Those things rock! Picked up another one as a spare because like everyone said, they're getting a bit older and unreliable.

Still relevant? I don't use mine live anymore, but I wish they'd go back into production. I'd definitely pick one up.

I have one and the closest thing tonally I can think of would be a smoother marshall jvm but with less gain.
