The title pretty much says it all. Apologies for my want to swap the stock Celestion 70/80 in my Blackstar HT60 for a Celestion G12H Anniversary which is in an amp I hardly use. The G12H is rated at 30 watts but the amp is 60 watts. Is there any danger of damaging the amp or speaker in doing this?

Speaker go boom. No load can cause OT to go boom sometimes so amp go boom.

Try a different speaker.

Let me not be the first to say, yes. It will be very easy to blow that speaker with that amp. And even if you don't, g12h30s don't sound that great pushed anyway IMO.

Why not try a WGS speaker?

I'd trade the G12H30 for a good speaker rated 60w or more.

Redfastponycar is selling an et65 which would be fantastic for that..

FYI..I've blown speakers in a 100w cab with a 20w amp.

There's MUCH more to "safe speaker loads" than pure wattage ratings.


Give me 10 years and I could give a 10w speaker a happy life with a 100w Marshall.
Give me 10 minutes and I could blow a 100w speaker with 20w.

Ratings just give recommendations. Do something stupid and you're fucked no matter what. Don't do anything stupid and you should be fine exceeding your wattage rating.

nothing like the sound of a speaker being pushed way to hard; you could always measure the actual voltage hitting the speaer to make sure you are in the safe range... but odds are you wont be unless you talking some cheap 60w crate amp or some crap.

It looks like i blew an EVM with a 5 watt amp apparently. Double the wattage thru a speaker is really pushing it. I prefer to have the speakers rated for at least double the amp im putting thru it but i play with a lot of bass, palm muting and even some octave down.

If you play a 30 watt amp into a 39 watt speaker you get a 69

Try the musicradar classifieds then. UK based, Lots of speaker swaps there and a few people from the continent post.

What don't you like about the 70/80, and what are you hoping to get by swapping speakers?

Thanks for the heads up. I'm not sure the root of the problem of not liking my Blackstar lies in the type of speaker. Maybe it's the tubes or the power amp section or whatever...I dunno.

I want to get rid of the stiffness in the cleans and the fizzyness in the dirty sounds. It should all sound a bit smokier, for lack of a better word.

Maybe have it biased a bit hotter.
