Boom. that too. 3 generations, small rooms, lots of siblings. they all spend lots of time together. They don't move away. They all eat together in crowded dining rooms, etc. Recipe for disaster if you're trying to not spread a virus.

K-Bizzle wrote:Billy from my recollection of being in Italy there are a lot of smokers and they’re smoking A LOT.

Looking up data 30% of adult males smoke there, that’s about double the US rates. Not sure how it compares to the rest of the world but that can’t be helping considering the viruses effect on lungs.

yeah that certainly doesn't help. Although I think smoking is pretty prevalent for males in China too...

It's worth pointing out that the worst case we had in the US so far is this family in New York. 7 family members got it and 4 already died. It absolutely destroyed the family. They're Italian-Americans. Could it be a a complete random coincidence? Sure. But still...

They also have the second oldest population - only Japan is older.

It all adds up - combined with a slow initial lockdown, and the high number of Chinese nationals who work in their leather/textile industries - it just got out of control.
the mortality rate is less obvious though.

That's true too. But that's the entire Latin world though, not only Italians. Spanish, Portuguese, French (to a lesser degree) and all countries that were colonized by them share that trait.

info on Italy's flu season... https://www.thelocal.it/20200123/flu-ou ... -in-a-week

At the risk of sounding like a total fear-monger, thinking this is just another flu or a kinda bad flu is dangerous guys, don't go down that road.

yeah but Italy is fairing considerably worse than the rest of the world for some unknown reason. I don't know anything about epidemics but I do global data analysis for a living and if one of the regions I work with was doing that much worse than the global average I would immediately look into local causes. There's something there that's being missed, whether it's genetics, environment or behavior, I don't know. But there's definitely something off in the Italian case. I am surprised this is not being looked at more. Or maybe they are looking at it idk.

FWIW, this is anecdotal, but I spent 2 weeks with a big family in Sicily doing mostly non-touristy things.

The adults/parents/elderly with whom I interacted are not healthy, in general. They eat cured meats at every meal, and NEVER drink water. They all have lymphatic issues that could be a big problem when hoping for a strong immune system. I know everybody likes to say, "uhh, American is so fat. People Europe walk everywhere. we much healthy."

In Italy, it was a different story. (not that they're fat) People seem to age quickly when they literally don't drink water. Since there are no public bathrooms, people don't drink water for fear of needing to take a piss. It's foreign to me.

Just thinking out loud trying to make sense of this Italy situation.

yeah that's the kind of thing that needs to be looked at. There's definitely something there that's killing more people than the global average. That type of behavior could definitely be one the causes.

yeah the mortality rate is alarming. I think they're over 10% (of reported cases). That's WAY higher than the global average.

The data for the usa is looking scary. The cases have exploded over the last 10 days. New York is lining up to look like Italy, reeeaally fast. Florida also has scary data.

The trend and rates shown at the moment for western countries is about to become VERY real. Depending on the level of public adotpion of distancing measures, the likeliness of a military enforced quarantine is going to be deployed all over.

We're under lock down now, other than to pick up supplies, perform essential work or for exercise. I just went for an hour's walk around our neighborhood at what would normally be rush hour - it's a total ghost town, as it should be.

Just had a Teams online meeting with the boss. Work from home for eight more weeks.

I think the US is gonna take a major beating with this one for a variety of reasons.

1) Years of having confusing messages shouted at us from every direction making us not trust everything we hear.
2) Years of having the media be caught in lie after lie.
3) Years of watching corruption in officials run so rampant that it's just considered normal to think they're crooked.
4) A completely confused and botched communication attempt about what is happening, what needs to happen, and what we can do to stay safe.

Combine that with a super distinct lack of give-a-fuck for themselves or others for a large number of folks that are just tired of the constant stream of bullshit, and you end up with the dipshit brigade partying at the beach or people congregating in the park to have stupid packed-crowd walks. And that ain't no way to stop the spread of a virus that can transfer so easily.

Weze not gonna be lookin purty in a few more days. I can't even begin to imagine how bad it's going to get before it gets better.

Our governor finally announced schools are closed until May now, and that she may have to revisit that estimate over the next few days to weeks.

Around here we're fairly locked down. Taking the dogs for a walk the streets are fairly deserted except for by Wells Fargo at their shift changes. Outside of that it's like walking through an empty town. But the images from other cities, beaches, and such? Crowds, crowds, crowds.

Those fuckers are the reason we'll likely get Martial Law enacted. Because people are too stupid, too numb, or to blindingly pissed off to care.

The wierdest thing about it is that since this has blown up into a pandemic, fretless hasn't been around much at all. No way that's a coincidence.

He's trying to make sure dispensaries are deemed essential businesses so they can stay open during the lock-down. Priorities, bro. Priorities.

here in PA they are, since it is only medical - my wife is happy about that.

fretless is probably hiding in a corner somewhere in a full body condom - breathing through a gas mask.

Just got out of a conference call, my initial 10% pay reduction is now 30% with a 4 day work week. And half of my team was put on unpaid leave so I'm one of the lucky ones.

Wow that sucks 20% less work, 30% less pay.....

Or take the 10% cut first - then it becomes 20% less work, 22.2% less pay - the 10% + 20% just don't add up that way.

Anyway you slice it - even though you ARE one of the 'lucky ones' - it still sucks.

I'm just waiting for that hammer to drop. We already had to take two week unpaid vacation when the first (worldwide) conferences and tradeshows started getting cancelled. More have been laid off since Philadelphia closed all not-essential businesses last week.

My divisions Warehouse is just outside the city - they stayed open a while longer, but are now closed too.

This country needs to get back to work!

Social distancing short term is the key. NYC is having troubles because of the congestion and reliance on its transportation system-- crowded buses, subways etc-- just like Jersey. The virus will continue to spread havoc until people wake up and adhere to CDC recommendations. I know it would be tough to accomplish in a huge city but it has to be done. Wuhan was able to contain. I see Martial Law on the Horizon if people in the US continue to bury their heads in the sand.

We are really slowing down on all cases aside from emergencies, transplants and patients who can’t make it 30 days or more. If a hospital stops doing hearts you know they are worried because we are a huge money maker.
