Me and the wife have been discussing this for a while. Military people who are deployed in dangerous and operational areas receive a risk level pay associated with their duties. I think a case like this should put the people who still have to go to work receive a risk assessment and associated pay. At least it would be an encouragement for putting themselves out there.

Including and not limited to:
- Health workers
- Grocery store cashiers, gas station cashiers etc..
- Police, 1st responders, fire / ambulance
- Delivery people, and truckers who handle merchandise etc..

At least a look at something as an incentive..

meh... how many celebs/athletes got tested? Maybe a couple of hundred tops? It's a drop in the bucket. The lack of testing is the real issue.

I know it's hard to leave politics out when this is about public health but please do leave it out.

Let's use this thread to share our personal experiences, check on each other and post news about the progress/decline of the pandemic.

The "who's fault is it?" is a discission for some other time/forum.

I'm inside the house almost 24/7, already took a pay cut and wife temporarily lost her job. The last thing I want to spend my time on is moderating political arguments.

Thanks.

Getting tested when asymptomatic is useful if you are a caretaker of vulnerable people. Yes it can be a waste, but hindsight is not going to feel good if someone you care for dies because you gave it to them.

This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. Michael Osterholm was on Rogan last week, he said: "It's just beginning, In terms of the hurt, pain, suffering, death that has happened so far is really just the beginning. This is going to unfold for months to come. We're gonna be in some hurt for the next few months."

He's a contagion investigator and advisor to the white house.

I'm still able to work and fully employed through spring. I have been teaching online for 20 years so I might even be able to pick up some extra classes.

My oldest son (autistic and still lives with us) was laid off from his restaurant job.

My wife is losing AT LEAST 8 hours of work a week. It is possible that she will be fully laid off. Yes, she is a nurse. However, she works with cancer patients. Patients getting chemo are still able to get that but nothing else. All resources are focusing on Covid 19 and other immediate care. She might join the hospitals "float pool" and go back to front line, floor nursing duties. That would also mean taking whatever shift is available (evenings, nights, weekends).

My 18 year old is stating waiting for official word from the school district about what he needs to do to graduate this spring.

My 15 year old daughter (also autistic) just want to GO PLACES!

NY has 10,000 new cases so far (no shock) the numbers are going to increase especially with more testing available, i was out and doing some shopping earlier and things were very calm in the local supermarket (of course cautious) but overall not bad at all - The supermarket staff actually was doing a great job with things, they are also front line and center with the public and they did a very nice job from what i saw

seems like a MUCH better question would be why the US is lagging so far behind every other country in tests available.

another very relevant question would be by why this administration ignored months of red alert warnings from our intel agencies that this virus would be horrible while downplaying everything to the public as a dem impeachment hoax.

Fair question as to why we dont have as many tests but its possible because we have more people than Italy S Korea and other smaller countries  - We only have around 15000 Ventilators and something like this is a absolute CRUSH/SHOCK to the medical system - no leader/goverment would be ready for such a surge in a short time, we simply dont have enough space or hospital beds wither and that is not really anyones fault, its just the surge and demand in such a short time

Trump was criticized and called xenophobic by many in the media and some politicians for closing the border to China/Europe but looks to be a good move in hindsight. Yes he does bicker with some reporters and its a bad optic and is petty at times but i dont think it interfares with the actual task at hand. We now have the private sector, all goverments (local and federal and Republicans/Democrats working together (passed legislation) and some actual nice words spoken about each other and GREAT TO SEE THIS!!! :usa: ) --- its basically all hands on deck, they are even asking retired people to come back and assist things, someone mentioned earlier this is like WW2 and everyone chipping i and its a valid point

The Doctor Faucci (shorter guy) has been impressive to me as well so far, just remember that this is like NOTHINGlike any of us have seen in our lifetime, we will get through this in time

Our locals hospitals asked any sewing people to sew masks if they have sewing machines. Over 100 people signed up immediately. I said to my wife, this is just like the country coming together during times of war.

Great article that really sums up how I have been feeling.
Long, but thorough - not politically based.

A great read on the approach to Corona

Well, we are still at a small fraction of deaths in the US compared to the flu this season (like <2%) - some people don't project well, so they're probably still saying it.

I still have clients who want to meet up close. I want to tell them I’m not comfortable with that. I may do just that.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/2018-2019.html

Flu season 2018-19 (US only):

35M cases
16M medical visits
490K hospitalizations
34K deaths

We're a long way from that, thankfully.

Zoom is kinda a pain in the ass

Much better/easier is meet.google.com. We use it at work - don't know anything about setting up - but as a tool it is very easy to use/share/video conference.

I live in Chicago, the city not the burbs. Most days I can walk outside of my condo and see people walking all around. With being able to work from home and catching it myself I’m trying to avoid everyone but my wife and our 2 closest friends who live a couple blocks away and are also already sick.

Today I’m going to take the dog to the park because we’re all getting stir crazy but I’m going to wear a mask and keep my distance. While I’m young and healthy there’s plenty of people I care about that aren’t so I’ll do what little I can.

“What little you can” indeed. . First, of course your Dr will say you maybe have it, but it’s ridiculous to suggest that actually confirms it anymore than what you felt before talking to him. Also the regular flu is going around a lot too. And I know a handful of people who think they have it too. And they are also In the city. One of em is a nurse so she got tested for flu, since they will test many for that if there isn’t a covid test available and she had regular flu. Her husband too. Another also got tested for regular flu And had it. So far no confirmed for Covid. Not saying you don’t but c’mon, why do people want to act like they have it when they aren’t confirmed? I’m noticing this for some reason. But if you truly believe you have it, Your actions suggest you should have answered around 3-3-4. Lol

Anyway I believe you can get this AND the regular flu simultaneously so even tho you think you are healthy a double whammy can be a bit much for anyone. So if you have it and say your friends who are “sick” have the regular flu, that’s actually a really bad idea...

But let’s say you do have this cause your answers here are kinda perplexing for someone who just said you are at a 10,10,9 in taking this seriously and doing all kinds of preventative measures. Even tho I think chances you have this are very slim, IF you do, and you are taking this as seriously as you claim why would you go to a park and visit your 2 closest friends (cause they are also sick)? While I’m assuming walking the few blocks. That doesn’t seem hypocritical? since I Think a few pages back you were blasting people not taking it seriously?

I can say for myself, I’m going on with my daily life pretty much unchanged, but I work alone or with my helper. Since restaurants are closed I don’t go out for lunch and bring my own. If I need supplies I go get them. Grocery store the same. I try to remember to wash my hands more
Often, but can’t claim I do a TON more but I make an effort after hitting the grocery There isn’t much scenario I could hang around with a crowd at this point, so even tho I’m not a real big supporter of many of the measures being instilled, I’m being far more “safe” than yourself. And I have no symptoms but if I did?? I honesty would t see any of my friends or family even if we think they already been exposed. So yeah, sorry Biz, but if you are gonna be talking so strongly one this topic I really think you should take a look at your actions for someone who thinks they have it.

Oh, because no one reports on it like it is a World beater? , that means it’s not actually making its rounds as well right now? And killing people as well. Cause it is. I know a handful comfirmed with regular Flu. And like billy posted and I’m sure I posted that fact in here as well, flu has hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations and and tens of thousands of deaths while infecting millions. US alone! Worldwide in must kill hundreds of thousands if not near a million a year!! And not one person will ever make the headlines who dies from the flu. Think about that fact. While there have been thousands of deaths worldwide for Covid and it’s got a 24/7 news cycle at the moment. The flu has a PR problem. Lol. Cause it fucks up hundreds of millions of people every year. and no one really cares.

The honest truth is some areas like Italy are being hit abnormally hard. And other places like South Korea and even China now, are not anywhere near Italy. Is Italy the abnormal extreme? Is South Korea the other extreme? Is the actual number in The middle of the two or is South Korea the real example of the end result when treated similar to how they have? Or are we all headed towards Italy and it’s just a matter of time? Those answers don’t exist yet... and they won’t until it basically runs it’s course.

10 - 9 - 8

My wife works in healthcare and her job's reaction made me take this pretty seriously early on. We've been staying home except for getting groceries, we also have enough frozen and shelf stable food to last two weeks if we get it.

I'm still going into work at least today to touch base with my boss and see what the plan is. Its likely I'll work the rest of the week from home.

to put things in perspective about Covid-19 Vs the Flu..... the 2019-2020 Flu season for Italy that started in October or November and as of January 23rd has killed less than 240 people with 3Mil+ being infected, as of this weekend they recorded 624 deaths in one night with over 4000 in total with 47K in proven cases......

info on Italy's flu season... https://www.thelocal.it/20200123/flu-ou ... -in-a-week

At the risk of sounding like a total fear-monger, thinking this is just another flu or a kinda bad flu is dangerous guys, don't go down that road.
