Gonna check it out tonight. Really liked the first two. Think Downey plays Tony Stark really good.

6/10.

I'm surprised to see so much love for Captain Philips. I have no doubt that Hanks delivers, as usual, but the glorifying of the situation seems strange to me. Giant US military ships taking down a few destitute, desperate Africans...I don't advocate what the Somalian pirates were doing in any way, but to vilify them also seems wrong.
Hardtail wrote:Its not about US military ships taking down destitute pirates - they could have done that from a drone command trailer in Atlanta. The absolutely amazing thing is all that went into managing to save Captain Phillips when he was inside the escape vessel with 3 armed pirates who had nothing to lose at that point ... f'n glorious how they were able to neutralize the threat under the circumstances

The 3 armed pirates had nothing to lose ever, because Somalia was so thoroughly raped of the few resources they had. I guess I don't get the amazing thing about our highly trained military personnel taking down desperate Somalians

However, those could be handled if the acting, directing and plot weren't so horrible. Its just a terrible movie in every way. I can totally see 12-15 year olds in the 80s loving it but good lord it hasn't aged well and objectively its just terrible.
I think I did the right amount of complaining last night to not piss off my wife but to make sure I never have to sit through that horrible pile of shit again.

Lost boys is a cinematic masterpiece compared to twilight

I suggest you see the movie then ... only then will you get a sense of how amazing it actually was under the circumstances they were faced with. Maybe as a shooter I appreciate more what actually goes into long range rifle shooting & how the Seal snipers pulled off those shots when they had to at the last second under extreme pressure from a moving platform

But by "extreme pressure" you mean from a completely different boat, under no threat, firing at untrained, desperate Somalians. It is not the shots that I disagree with, it is the glorification of the situation.

the somali situation IS sad, and if you see the movie, they hit on that. its not "oh look how awesome the SEALs are-join the navy!" it shoots from all the angles, which was nice.
because when i was over there, and our pirates where held in our hangar, getting the best treatment of their entire lives under armed imprisonment (we bathed them, clothed them, fed them, treated them well), it was hard to see them as evil criminals. they were scared starving kids.
but the feat of marksmanship WAS great. it was something that needed to be done, as judged by the responders on scene, not by us armchair strategists.
and starving and scared as you may be, in a land ruled by fear of warlords who siphon the aid we provide, sad as that is, you simply cannot intercept shipping and take hostages, or fire on a warship for that matter (uss cape st george) and expect no consequences.

Well said indeed, and I agree that obviously there must be consequences, especially when they take hostages. In one of the trailers I have seen there appears to be multiple US ships chasing after this boat, which is one thing to me that seems ridiculous. Making a movie about the situation in general seems ridiculous. Because however the film paints it(and I'm glad to hear that they do show some of the dire situation there) many people aren't going to see the truths behind it, they are going to make villains of the pirates and glorify the men that took them down. But the Somalia situation will remain unresolved. I have no doubt that the shots made were incredible feats, but let's see a movie that looks deeper at why those shots were necessary, beyond saving the life of the beloved Tom Hanks.(That wasn't sarcastic, who doesn't love Tom Hanks?)

seriously, watch it. the first thing it does is hammer home that these are desperate and not evil men. it also goes to great pains throughout the movie to humanize and garner some sympathy for some of the pirates. and im not trying to be a dick here, but are you assessing not only a film, but an entire geopolitical problem spanning multiple decades from a trailer? watch the shit, brother!
and the multiple ships has tactical meaning behind it:
-they are towing the boat, not chasing it
-destroyer and frigate arrive first. faster, more maneuverable than a big deck. were closer to the incident as well, first responders. better armed in case the situation (which they were not fully briefed on until arrival) went hot. better tracking operators and database operators (such as yours truly) to feed info back to the fleet as well.
-big deck arrives for air support for evac, better medical facilities (actual doctors instead of a corpsman), ability to crane lift the lifeboat, flag officer support for command and control, better translators, better ability to negotiate with mainland law enforcement.
-the arrival of the big deck (USS Boxer, an LHD or helo carrier/marine transport dock ship) did serve, to varying degrees if intentionality, as intimidation, both to that crew, and the 30 or so pirate vessels converging on the position of the pirates to aid. in reality, the DDG has WAY more firepower, not that any of it would be necessary, but is just way more deadly of a vessel.
and hell, it worked. it broke their spirit a bit. as did our 5" cannon when it served as a warning shot for the motor vessel Safina al-Birsarat, which immediately surrendered peacefully with no shots fired for effect at all, on either side.
we do things for a reason, and if there is any section of the military that really does do true hero work on a daily basis in that part of the world, especially in aid-to-combat ratio, its the USN. 99% of our boardings were to deliver food and water to dhows in the gulf.
and i agree, man, it was a weird mix of feelings to be chest thumping when we fired our gun, they threw up their arms and our boarding team secured them and their weapons. fuckl yeah america, right? until they got on board and you could see the pure desperation, the filth, the hunger, the animal-like viciousness not born of evil, but out of necessity, to capture any opportunity possible to stay alive. it was humbling, and it put a lot of shit into perspective.
all that said, apparently the crew of the maersk alabama say that cpt phillips was really a shit head that no one liked and they didnt hit on that hard enough in the film (they did some).
