Yeah when I first saw a restaurant with that sign about Gaiters not counting as masks I was like wtf.

Let's not even get in to the fact that the flimsy paper mask they consider okay was only needed to walk 10 feet in the place to sit at the bar, where I promptly removed it and killed illness the old fashioned way, with booze.



And this place wasn't an anomaly. There was a rash of places in north Texas like this. Glad to hear it wasn't widespread because it was one of the dumber things I saw during the last year.

That is super weird. I heard nothing about it here in the East Coast and we've been to at least 6 different states.

My wife reminded me all airlines have banned neck gaiters as well. I knew it was somewhere that wasn't just a mom and pop shop.

Regardless of how one feels about masks, I have a hard time believing gaiters are less effective than a paper mask. Either way, here's a huge example of meaningless policy.

I wouldn't get on a plane with anything less than a well fitted FPP3 mask and I'd be much happier if everyone else aboard was wearing one too. That's the policy for our research aircraft at least.

Here in PA you can't even (still) sit at the bar. Only at tables, and you have to order food, not just drink.
Some places have kind of circumvented it by sliding tables up against the bar so you are sitting at a table, right next to the bar. But even then, they are not allowed to serve you over the bar, they have to walk around to the table with food/drinks.

How stupid is that?

This has to be a Philadelphia thing. In Lackawanna county, you can sit at bars and order drinks only since early April.

No, not upset about it, just now, that they are admitting you can still get CoViD after being vaccinated (called an vaccine, but not a vaccine) they go ahead and drop the masks. Pretty wishy washy science with this (as you stated in another post)

Did you even read the article? He tested positive but didn't have any symptoms or transmit it to anyone on his staff because that's what the vaccine does.

Yes, I read it, and no, that is not a vaccine. Or at least not a very effective one.

So, it's technically not a vaccine in the truest sense but it does absolutely stimulate resistance and we are seeing a very clear reduction in spread.

It is a vaccine. No vaccine is 100% effective against infection. Even well established vaccines like polio and varicella have a rate of breakthrough infections. But they all prevent viral loads to get to levels where they're dangerous or contagious.
Brandon had chickenpox after being vaccinated against it but he had minimal symptoms, it went away in 2 days and didn't spread to anyone in his classroom. That's how all vaccines are.

The "will it last" is the big question. No one knows yet.

The other big problem is the virus is mutating as it spreads. So far no new strains got past the vaccine efficacy but that could change any minute.

I don't think we're at herd immunity yet. What they're trying to do is implement an honor system where if you're vaccinated you go maskless and if you're not, you wear a mask. I don't know how well that will work, but I prefer this over mandatory shit.
In other words, I'm happy to have my vaccination card/sheep certificate (I even laminated it ) but I'm even happier I got it voluntarily and not mandated.

I was never really worried about getting really sick from covid. My main worry was to catch the virus and carry it to someone elderly or immune compromise and get them in trouble.
But now that there is a vaccine that is effective in preventing severe disease and transmission, I feel like the responsibility of protecting others is not on me anymore. At least not as much as it once was.

Yeah the whole transition back to maskless will be a little funky because people as a whole transition in clunks, at best.

TBH I'm really tired of wearing them but still will when going into places that prefer them.

Yeah like I said, I just bought a Maryland camo gaiter. Vaccinated or not, I'll get at least another week out of it

Anyone who’s been paying any attention over the last few months realizes it isn’t 100%. People like athletes and talk show hosts are testing positive because there profession requires daily, or regular, testing. They most likely wouldn’t be getting tested otherwise.

So there was a professor at Duke that did some tests to compare efficacies of different facial coverings. In his study they found that the specific neck gaiter they used produced more and smaller water droplets than the baseline of no mask. This was interpreted (by media, not the study's originator) to mean they're worse than no mask for spreading COVID.

A case of science sciencing then nonscience people drawing all kinds of conclusions and then citing studies that don't necessarily say what they're trying to say. Hell the point of the paper was to show how to create inexpensive testing methods for measurement not the specific measurements themselves.

Yeah I certainly wasn't trying to circumvent anything, I just didn't hear about gaiters being less effective. I was still social distancing and taking all the recommended precautions.

I think one of the issues with this pandemic is we had to see the science around it evolve in real time, which can be confusing, it's normal to have all these seemingly contradictory studies at early stages of any research but you usually don't hear about the results until all these issues are thoroughly tested and sorted out. But we didn't have this luxury this time.

To the bold, ex-fucking-actly. My high school classmastes who always screeched "why are we learning this I'm never going to use this in real life!" in science class have proved endlessly that they were dead fucking serious about this.
People have such a hard time realizing that their intuitions and the scientific method are pretty much diametrically opposed and this especially becomes a problem when folks start misinterpreting or worse extrapolating results of disciplines they're not even remotely prepared to understand. Its been very frustrating.

That said Fauci's playing with the truth in the name of trying to keep the public calm has done nothing but cause more problems. Him saying masks aren't needed early on to stop people from panic buying them probably being the worst example. Doing so rightly leads people to further mistrust experts and by extension science on the subject at large. Again also frustrating from the other end.

Then there's the guys who got the vaccine but go on guitar forums every day and say they didn't.

The same thing happened in the 1980s' with the AIDS/HIV virus. The CDC and everybody else were trying to figure it out in real time. Just like COVID, it didn't stroll through the door with the directions on how to de-activate it. Obviously, the social and media eco-system is starkly different now. But the one common thread is the ease with which people jump right to hysterical conclusions.

My favorite part of laymans criticizing science thats being done in real time is their basic lack of understanding of the scientific method and not realizing the ever evolving and improving nature built directly into the process.

As new information comes to light perspectives and conclusions are updating appropriately, what is so hard to understand about this? Its not "flip flopping" its how the game that brought you everything that makes your life so damn comfortable fucking works.

Johnny Van Zandt was on the radio last week talking about he got the pfizer shots, then still managed to get the coof and spread it to his entire family

Science explains things and gives us answers. But the answers are always changing. Seems to me people think science is static when in fact it is perpetually dynamic.

Yeah the full protection happens 2 weeks after the second shot. Until then, you need to be as careful as you were before. That was probably the case here.
