Anyway, when my son turns 18, I will turn his bedroom into a chinchilla room. I already even showed him where the exercise wheel will go.

I've only been around chinchilla's at pet stores and the poor things were always terrified.

They were SO soft and cuddly though.

I mean I guess the economy is to blame but damn. Is my generation just done trying?

I'm guessing this explains a lot of frivolous spending I see by people my age. Spending that made me go "damn, maybe fry cooks make more than I thought..".

Guess it's easy to buy iPhones and expensive flip flops when there are no livig expenses to worry about.

Wait till you get to be my age.

I moved my mom back in with me when she got too old to take care of her house by herself. So, if you really wanna get technical about it, I live with my mom. Now if my daughter moved back in with me I'd be the Sandwich Generation poster boy.

Another sweet article.

There's two types of kids that move back in. The one that just lay around, bum cash off mom to go out and literally make no difference in their time from college days.

Then the kids that come back getting ready to shoot out with a new business, or whatever. Making the most of it.

Chinchillas can be very cool. We had one for awhile, and it would go like Yoda fighting Count Duku if it got out of the cage.

Back on topic, my son moved back home halfway through college. He basically had a nervous breakdown (clinical diagnosis depression and acute social anxiety disorder; he could hardly step out of the door). He hangs out almost 24/7 in an eight foot by six foot area in the living room, is on 2-3 meds that keep him from being suicidal and keep him on a halfway even keel emotionally. That he spends hours playing video games most days now is a huge improvement on spending hours getting drunk, as he was doing 6-8 months ago.

What is really scary is that he is pretty much a genius, and was going to a top 10 university. Now he freaks out at the thought of taking a class, even though it is almost certain that he would be the smartest guy in the room, including the professor. About half his friends from high school and college have had similar issues and ended up back home for stretches of time, though I don't think any of them has been quite as extreme. His mental state is improving at a glacial pace; I have no idea how or when he'll be able to leave. Are we enabling him? To some extent probably yes, but I really don't know how to improve the situation.

It's hard to say for sure; he was going to school on the opposite coast, so we wouldn't have much direct contact for months at a time. We know that my son had a semester at the start of his junior year where the majority of his friends were studying overseas, and his best friend at school (and his roommate) suddenly withdrew just before the start of the fall semester when the friend had a partial meltdown. My son had also had a pretty bad breakup midway through his sophomore year, which I think got him at least a little depressed.

We think that he moved from smoking too much weed and drinking too much on occasion to smoking weed constantly and full on alcoholism, and the combination of depression and depressives pushed him completely over the edge. He came home for Christmas and basically freaked whenever he tried to go back.

FWIW, he is improving, though at a fairly glacial pace. He's now doing things like doing grocery shopping on his own once a week or so, has stopped drinking altogether, and is overall less fragile. He still has pretty huge self-esteem issues. I am really worried though that our 16 year old cat that is in poor health is going to die soon, and he'll dive back into the bottle in response.

I moved out when I was fourteen & started my own bussiness. Worked for myself most of my life. When I went to collage I payed for it. I did not get grants, borrow or lend the money. I bought 3 homes .... sold them & have rented for more than twenty years. I have zero interest in owning a other home. My wife owns four and a condo - I keep trying to talk her into selling them ... but they are her's and I really do not care what she does with them. My grandkids are in school & my kids are on their own with families. I am too independent .... I could not imagine living with my parents into my twenties. Most people I know that went to college in the last decade have a debt & little more....
The fact that Stephen appears from nowhere, is sentenced to death in an emotional public trial without anyone interfering at all and is then altogether forgotten as if nothing happened, is already suspicious.

I moved out when I was 15 and I was working under the table at the time so I was able to graduate HS with honors. I'm in college now (NC) going on my last year and I've been paying my way while working a full time job since I was 16 and getting A's/B's all the while. One year till I graduate and the misses and I already have some prospective internships lined up. Even if it pays 10-12 am hour, it's much better than minimum wage in a dying economy. Life is all about choices and budgeting is one of them.

Not that there is an option for me, but I couldn't fathom going to live with my parents. No fucking way would the burden be cast on them. I mean, if they supported someone for 18 years, you should've taken advantage of it. Free rent during prime working years. Save your pay and once college hits (and age maturation) open a low risk interest account and let it build. Invest into small businesses/real estate.

Talking about hustle, franchise ownership (granted more comes into play) of a Chipotle restaurant is 5000. With decent credit, a fresh out graduate could even explore that as an avenue. That's one possible option. There are plenty of other viable ones too.

My generation is burden by rampant consumerism and a misguided sense of entitlement. I'm 22 and hanging around some of my friends/peers is embarrassing.

one of my assistants is going to be a baller. def does not have that entitlement attitude i hate. he works here for about 10 bucks an hour part time for the experience but has saved up since he was young (he used to be on our cleaning crew) and now goes to car auctions and then sells them on CL. other people would complain about such a low paying job but he hustles on the side to make it happen while gaining valuable experience. he is not even 21 yet. great head on his shoulders. so i guess there are some encouraging signs, not many though but some. makes me realize its all in how you raise your kids.

a few years ago I moved out of my house with my kid, who was a baby at the time. I had $600 dollars in my pocket and was driving a beat up old pickup at the time. I ended up renting from my folks, who have a couple of rental properties, so I guess this applies to me. I was a full time college student/full time dad living off my VA pension and it's worked out well. For a slightly reduced rent I help them out by doing stuff to their house and their other rentals which they'd normally have to pay someone else to do, (they've got some places with over an acre of grass to mow every couple of weeks) and every summer I usually do a major project of some sort for them, like building kitchen cabinets or the tree-house last summer.

What this has allowed me to do is this...

I can keep my kid in his excellent but expensive daycare where he's been since he was 6 months old.

I could afford a year end closeout on a new car (Honda Fit, cheapest car they make) to replace my 21 year old Nissan pickup which wasn't safe for him to ride in.

I could afford to finish my Business program at the local university.

etc.

I've sold a ton of music gear, guns, etc. and pared my gear down to a couple of guitars and my Kemper which pretty much killed all my GAS anyway.

I now spend every penny on saving up for custody battle 2.0 and eventually moving away when I'm done with my degree.

Currently, even though my Son lives with me full time I get no child support or anything because the best I could "Officially" get was 50/50. I'm going back to court soon to make the full time gig official as he's been living with me for some time now.

I'm renting a 3 bedroom home built in 2005 with 1700 sqft to some folks for $900/mo and happy to do so!

My son is free to live with us for as long as he wants. I had that option and hopefully I'll make life as difficult for him as it was for me at home and he'll take it upon himself to move out/on and get the fuck away from us crazy's.

I still live with my parents. But thats simply because I am not home enough to need a house.

I do miss being at home though, and in all honesty, I can't wait to have my own house. Right now though, its not feasible in any sense at all to get my own place.
