He is definitely struggling with drug addiction, which really sucks. I've seen a lot of people that were actually nice get completely transformed after drugs take hold of them. So I feel bad for the guy. It's a tough path to travel.

Yeah that one really stuck out, even amidst the goddamn insanity that was HCAF in its scumden heyday. I had completely forgotten about it until Dave brought it up. He even treated it like a build project, if I remember right…like some dudes do with amp kits or guitars…except his was a garage gloryhole built from dirty, scavenged plywood.

In case you missed his thread, but apparently one of his ladies of the evening robbed him blind. Assuming while he was locked up. He said they even took his dog.
I'd guess there's more to the story... like the landlord may have had to evict him for being a crackhead junkie. When he went to jail they might have seen an opening to vacate his shit, and send his dog to a rescue in hopes of finding a good home.

Too bad . . . OP and I are similar in age. I wanna say that I won't mope about my midlife crisis knowing there are people who suffer worse, but I will mope anyway.
How did OP make it this far anyway? Seems like he's been living an at-risk life for a while. I was once told that when you're F'ed up on drugs, you stop maturing and make decisions like the person you were before drugs were in your life. To be 50+ years old, coming across some money, and blowing it on gear whilst living in a motel? And still getting in trouble with the law? Will he ever become a productive member of society?

I think you're right about the emotional maturity being stunted from when you start using any mind altering substance too much. I quit drinking was I was 25 and between getting my act together, and being away from brain erasing, I matured.

Yeah I have never had issues with hard drugs, so I can’t speak to that. Never used them at all. I have, however, smoked a ton of weed and had issues with alcohol as a result of self-medication and dealing with grief. It definitely changes your mindset and maturity level. You either learn to control it or you don’t.
I still love a good whisky, but it’s an appreciation thing instead of a pound it back for a buzz thing. I can count on one hand the number of pours I’ve had in the past couple of months. You either take control of it or you dive headfirst down the shitter.

Pretty much. I had my 'come to jesus' moment with alcohol about 11 years ago. Got a DUI, stone cold quit for about 2 years, managed to not lose my then new job and got my shit together. Even though I've since drank a bit since then, I no longer do it to the excess that I used to. And I don't drive if I do drink. I MAY have a Guinness on Friday. I've had this six pack in my fridge for the better part of year now and there's still 4 or 5 left. I like to be more clear headed anymore. And honestly, since having my son, I drink even less.
And don't get me wrong, I do love a guinness still or a good whiskey. But I can't and won't do it like I used to. Not worth it.

Yeah I’m with you. Can’t do it like I used to. Old habits can very easily and very quickly re-establish themselves. It’s too easy.
That said, I do have a 9 year old Elijah Craig private barrel release that is fucking ambrosia in a bottle. BUT, I rarely touch it for the reasons we’ve mentioned, and it’s nearly 65% ABV, and a buzz is a dangerous, dangerous thing.
But GOD, it’s delicious.

Damn man, I imagine it is! I came home with some Teeling whiskey from Ireland. That bottle is still largely intact but every once in a while I pour glass to sip on. And it is wonderful.

It really is. I’ve got a decent sized collection of some really decent bottles, I just rarely touch any of them any more.
