Anyone else prescribed adderall? I'm a bit surprised at the lack of first hand responses. It seems like most of my colleagues are on it, all of my successful friends, and various attorneys I've talked to have mentioned it...

A few pills kind of found their way to me (I wasn't looking for it) just about when I could really use them.
Honestly considering how its gone so far as a "taking when needed" kind of basis I'm going to talk to my doctor about it. This doctor literally wrote me a script for zollaft of some other ssri based only on me saying I sometimes have low energy or am sad, so I'm sure she'll follow suit with this one as well.

Experience wise I find the same as you with the coffee/adderall combo and also know a fair number of successful people doing the same thing.

Adderal is speed, not a cocaine synthetic/derivative. Speed was the hardest drug I ever kicked. It's a dopamine turbo that will eventually burn your brain into oblivion. Fine recreationally, but I wouldn't make a habit of it.
Your posts here in this thread all seem to be rationalizations of sorts, and the fact that you're asking here means you're a little wary of it. I'd stay cautious of it for sure.
Make no mistake, all speed will blow your adrenal glands eventually. It's physical, doesn't matter who you are.

I'm not judging, so please don't take it that way...

If your doctor prescribed it to you to treat something that he felt was warranted, then who are we to second-guess. He's the medical professional. You seem to understand the risks and reward and it appears to be working for you. Kudos. Your G/F, however, would be going to the doctor and essentially asking him/her to prescribe a drug because you are happy with the results it provides you. That's "iffy" at best. Adderall seems to help you focus and complete tasks. Hypothetical - what if you were hyper and your doctor prescribed Xanax, which really seemed to calm you. Would it be OK for your G/F (or anyone) to go to the doctor to get Xanax because it helped you? If she didn't have any prior inclination that she needed medicine for that particular situation, deciding that she does based on your results may not be appropriate. Right? Again, not judging - just posing a question...

I'm the posterboy for ADHD but the doc's won't prescribe anymore since replacing most of my high pressure circulatory system with Dacron. The stuff is a god-send for me but really, if I'm exercising enough and sleeping/eating right I don't need it.

I'm the most abstract person you'll ever meet, and it's just another piece of the puzzle so I can get shit done. But I'm not going to put my job and clearance and all that on the line to source it off the books. I just drink lots of coffee in the AM, try and get enough sleep, do my cardio, and try and stay focused.

Re: Your thoughts on Adderall?

Post by Sasquatch »

here are some facts along with lots of personal experience.

adderall is a mix of L-amphetamine (more racemic) and D-amphetamine. Vyvanse is just D-amphetamine. Adderall has more side effects bc of the Levo side. They are similar but adderall IR (immediate release, aka, standard adderall) is bit more energizing whereas vyvanse is more about concentration. They both overlap a lot but u can tell a difference. The other difference is adderall IR lasts 4-6 hours and when it wears off you get more of a crash and sleepy. Vyvanse lasts 10-12 hours (manufacturer says 14 but is more 10-12) and wears off smoothly. It is more designed to work during the day and then wear off by the time evening comes around and then u sleep. You only have to take 1 dose per day versus 2 or 3 with adderall. Adderall can be used more on an as-needed basis but if u need something to do the whole day vyvanse is better. Pick what is best for you.

Here are some life-saving tips I can offer:

Don't use them to stay up later to get more done. You can deplete your dopamine stores FAST doing this as you need sleep to help restore your catecholamines.

Stay away from stomach and urine acidifying foods or supplements as they will decrease amp effectiveness. On the flip side, alkaline substances increase amp in your system. This is also not a good thing. Stay away from tums and use Pepcid instead unless I want your resting heart rate up over 120.

Eat plenty of protein as amino acids help create catecholamines.

Don't chase the initial euphoria. That wears off soon but the ability to concentrate stays with you a long time. Don't confuse initial euphoria with what the drug is intended to do or you will wind up in a world of hurt.

THE most important thing I can tell you is about the amino acid L-Tyrosine. This is a dopamine and NE precursor and helps restore your catecholamines at an incredibly fast rate. It can knock withdrawal down from 3-4 days to half a day. Must be taken on an empty stomach at the dose of 500-2000mg 1-3x/day. NEVER take it with amps but take it on your days off or 1 each night on an empty stomach after the amps have worn off. You will keep tolerance at bay. The high doseage is more for a withdrawal. You can also use DLPA or L-phenylalanine in place of tyrosine but they aren't quite as good at restoring DA and NE levels as tyrosine as they are one step further back in the conversion process.

Conversion basically goes phenylalanine > tyrosine > L-dopa > dopamine. And unless u have Parkinson's, do not take L-dopa

If u find your tolerance going up, take a weekend off and just supplement with tyrosine. It will reset you but if you make sure u sleep and take 500mg /day of tyrosine on an empty stomach, you will most likely avoid tolerance.

Some other thoughts:
Go buy a bottle of L-tyrosine and pop 2000mg on an empty stomach. U may find it may be all that you need.

Also, if you are looking for more energy to keep up, with some added concentration (vs amps where after initial period they are much more concentration and less about energy) you could try wellbutrin. It is used for ADHD as well. It acts on the same DA NE systems in your brain to increase them. It is dopamine norepinephrine reputable inhibitor. Adderall is also a dopamine norepinephrine reputable inhibitor but adderall also causes the release of dopamine (happens first then reputable) and wellbutrin only allows it to build. Wellbutrin is way cheaper and may be an option (I'd take 300mg XR / day) to consider but again, amps allow more concentration and Wellbutrin more energy but they do cross-over but not nearly as similar as adderall and vyvanse.

U wanna know more, just PM me.

Yeah, if I didn't have a prescription then I wouldn't take it for the same reasons. I made it 12 years in to my career without it, so I don't feel it's necessary. However, I have to agree with the god-send comment, as I feel it's been extremely beneficial to me.

I'm scatter brained, plain and simple.

my screening had me ADHD off the charts. I'm also bipolar 2. If u want to control ADHD I'd go with vyvanse which imho for ADHD is superior. It is a great drug without some of the side effects of adderall.

I have personal experience with Adderall, Strattera, Vyvanse, Concerta, Ritalin, Dexedrine, and probably quite a few more that I can't remember right now, which is kind of ironic.

I currently take Vyvanse daily (though I'll take weekends off if I'm just going to be mowing the lawn and playing the guitar), and supplement with occasional Adderall PRN. I also have an very, very deep firsthand knowledge base of stimulant drugs both legal and not-so, especially for a guy who still has all his teeth.

I was diagnosed ADHD when I was 12, and was put on CNS stimulants to address it. First the fabled Ritalin (which is the same methylphenidate now found in more sophisticated extended-release formulations like Concerta), then more Ritalin, then finally Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine, the same stuff now found in Vyvanse). My parents pulled me off all of it cold turkey when I was 14, for reasons I've never fully understood, and I responded by completely falling apart. Like, wear two different shoes out the front door levels of falling apart. Zone out in the middle of a conversation with my best friends (to say nothing of school) levels. Laughably absent-minded. I nearly failed to graduate high school in spite of being, modesty aside, a smart motherfucker.

Somewhere along the line I developed some pretty rigid coping mechanisms for the physical, material elements of my ADHD. I became (and remain) the guy who never loses or misplaces anything. But my brain remained a mess behind the Potemkin Village of my outward organization. That was me from about age 22 to 32: functional, if underachieving. Then I got divorced in '05 and tried to medicate depression with alternating (and frequently overlapping) binges of alcohol and MDMA, for about a full year. (Pro tip: don't do that. There's no such thing as a "maintenance dose" of e. Trust me, it'll break your brain for years to come. Or so I hear.)

Anyway, over the last five years, as my work has migrated from "management and writing, on a pretty routine schedule" to "graphic design, layout, and writing, 15 projects at once" I found I wanted something to help me stick to computer tasks a little better. It was frustrating, because I was learning new skills I was excited about, working on projects that were fun for me, and simply could...not...concentrate. After trying a few prescription ADD drugs, Vyvanse ended up being it. My history being what it is, I'm very sensitive to feeling "speedy," find it kind of unpleasant these days, and Vyvanse works for me. While I can and do pop an Adderall from time to time, I dislike it for the very reason that it feels exactly like a small, clean hit of meth (and, to a lesser extent, like coke). For that reason, it's literally once a month or less that I'll pop a 10mg or 2.

Anyway, LMK if you want to know anything.
"If there was only a way that I couldn't even any less than I already can't then I'd gladly not, but I think I've entered some quantum paradox, dark matter levels of can't evening where the total absolute value of not evenness exceeds all ability to explain the can'ting." - MR RUBATO

Re: Your thoughts on Adderall?

Thanks.

I didn't read the thread so I thought u may be new to the game but u are good. My bad dude. From your post you are taking it correctly. If u want to switch to vyvanse from adderall, you'll either take 20mg or 30mg vyvanse based on 10mg adderall but they aren't quite the same.

10mg/day, excellent this controls symptoms and if this is all u ever take u are good. ADHD is synonymous with addiction, which i struggled with for years. This is bc of low dopamine. ADHD, in my experience, gets worse over time. Read studies about people who are ADHD and addicts and then start medicine and they straighten out. There is some evidence that treating ADHD with amps at therapeutic levels can help repair the brain in people with ADHD.

Stay hydrated. Very important.

Amps deplete magnesium and many people are magnesium deficient on magnesium already. Magnesium helps your brain make GABA, the stuff that makes u calm and that benzodiazepines act upon. You need to take magnesium, potassium and zinc every day. U also need a good vitamin b complex but without vitamin C. Try to find a non-acidifying vitamin C supplement and take it too. Ascorbic acid is not the vitamin C u want.

Here's how I do it;
Wake up, walk, drink water, put on work clothes. Drink coffee and take a vyvanse.

45 mins later drink a muscle milk and eat. I use the pro series bc more protein and thus more amino acids.

The rest of the day just do as normal.

Another cup of coffee late afternoon, kicks vyvanse back in just a bit to go the distance.

Usually drink a vitamin water.

Take a Tyrosine at some point on an empty stomach after vyvanse has worn off, usually about an hour before supper.

At night, take vitamins with supper.

Another good way to get magnesium is to take a hot bath with 2 cups of epsom salt. It isn't really salt but magnesium and I absorb it through your skin. U will feel more relaxed and for the next couple of days, bc you have gotten your magnesium and this GABA back up, you will feel like you have taken a very low dose of Valium. I usually do this on Fridays or if the day has been stressful and I drink more than my usual coffee amount.

Green tea is an excellent replacement for coffee later in the day. The theanine in it increases serotonin AND dopamine and decreases NE, making you calm yet focused. Good stuff.

One last thing is 5htp. It is a precursor to serotonin. Amps also deplete serotonin but no at the same rate as DE and NE. U could take 100mg in the evenings (use Dr's Best 5htp bc u need bit C and b6 for it to work right and DR's best already has it in there) when you take your tyrosine. It is also an excellent antidepressant, and speaking from experience, superior to Paxil and lexapro. 5htp also regulates dopamine so if happen to take extra adderall or too much coffee with it, take a 5htp and it will stop the tweaked out crap. Also, when I use things like amps that boost dopamine it also has an effect of depleting serotonin and vice versa.

And this is to really anyone. Check out the reviews of 5htp and Paxil, lexapro side by side.

https://treato.com/5-HTP,Paxil/?a=s

https://treato.com/5-HTP,Lexapro/?a=s

Regarding amino acids I've mentioned, they don't get you high bc they don't release the chemicals associated. They replenish the chemicals. The book "The Mood Cure" by Julia Ross is excellent.
