Just found out today that my guide from Bike Blast Vegas was killed. Hit by a car.

We rode together last month, and really hit it off. Wonderful guy. RIP. :(

Our ride a few weeks ago. Peace, friend.

Fuck.

It's such a pity that the population of cyclists is at such risk while commuting. I hope someone set up a ghost bike for him.

I went for a lunch quickie. It was pretty good, I believe.

Dude! That is nuts, Loop! Just to be able to have the energy to complete a trip like that (even without rabid attack dogs) is awesome. I did a tenth of that and was completely gassed yesterday.

Thanks man!

The only way you can talk your body into doing this long of a ride is to manage nutrition.

My method (works for me)

Night before:

About an hour before bedtime, bowl of pasta, no sauce, just olive oil. 2 light beers.

Morning of:

2 egg whites, redbull, bagel with peanut butter

On ride:

One Gu packet (I like the caffeinated ones) every 45 minutes. Cliff bar at 50 miles.
https://guenergy.com/shop/energy-gel

I carry 3 bottles. 1 in my jersey, and 2 on cages on the bike. 2 bottles are water, bottle #3 is water + a caffeinated Nuun tablet.
https://nuun.com/products/nuun-energy
Skip Gatorade. Too much sugar/syrupiness. Good for 1 hour before a ride, but during the ride, not as much, IMO.

I did a 20 mile recovery ride today on lunch. Came in sore today, feel awesome now. :thu:

This is great info! I've wondered how to manage these, as I've been victim to the 70km wall as of late. A co-worker wants me to do the Banff grand fondo, but I'm not real keen on paying $250 to race.

Agree with SFM - this is great info, Loop. Also cool that you drink beer to prep for a big ride - I like your style! I'm following you on Strava now, so I have some inspiration to work towards. Your recovery ride was almost as long as my entire commute! Sorry to hear about your friend from Vegas, that's my biggest concern is getting hit by some idiot texting.

Damn SFM, dat Utah crash! Looked like the guy had no brakes at all, he would never have made that turn even if that car wasn't there to slow him down...

I would guess he over-braked the front and his rear tire lifted, so he eased off the brakes. The worst part are the mopeds leaving no room for the bikes to go, causing two more.

WTF were the teams cars doing going through hair pins with the riders? WTF???????? And then the mopeds getting in the fucking way? I'm sure something similar has happened on the european tours at some point, but that looked very much like a case of a whole bunch of people (car & moped drivers) not knowing where they were supposed to be. Wow.

Loop, that's so awful. :(

I'm the only one in my family that hasn't been hit (knock on wood.) None of them too serious, though I thought my younger brother was dead when he got hit, thankfully he wasn't. Its something that concerns me as rural drivers aren't exactly bike aware or friendly all too often.

Man, seeing all these mountain bike trails makes me want to get one again. Must resist.

I finally moved my hoods back and my position is so much better. I re-wrapped the bars with the old tape just to make sure the position was dialed in before going with the super-pro-looking baller white. That should give me another 10%.

I hate my white tape. It looks grubby after like 1 ride.

I'm switching saddles this weekend to a Fizik Tour de France, and going back to black tape.

Riding our 20 mi lunch route in about 45 minutes...weather is so nice here today. Low 70's, no wind, no clouds.

I've got Fizik Aliante and it's pretty good. I wouldn't mind doing something different, like a brooks cambium, but those bitches are heavy for the price. An Arione is half the weight. I'm not sure why you'd go with the Tour edition when the standard with kium rails is almost $50 cheaper.

Prepare to be slower. White tape is proven to be faster. ;)

Because the Tour is practically free. Buddy bought. Wrong size, sat in his garage, my size. :thu:

What I lose in white tape speed, I'll get back with the new bibs and jersey I bought this week.

Sweet. Bibs are the absolute shit. I'm waiting for my favorite LG bibs to go on sale again so I can get a second pair. I can't deal with the silicone leg elastics most have. They chafe me something ridiculous.

It looks like a great saddle, though I don't know why it has a natural forward pitch. I always feel like I'm sliding off when it's anything but slightly above level.

I got the Bontrager Inform RXL bibs. I have the shoes from the same series. Love em.

Also, hit a pothole at about 25 mph today, and I'm pretty sure I won't be having any more kids. lol.

I love the Louis Garneau Chrome bibs. Made in Canada too.

Ow. I hate those fucking taint bashers.

Are you group riding? I'm impressed you get over 40 km/hr avg on a flat section. Time to fucking grind the pedals with the new fit and positions. I was going to ride hard tonight, but I might have to clean my condo to list it for sale instead. Balls.

There's a bunch of us at work that group ride on lunch, since Sweetwater is surrounded by country roads, and we have a locker room with showers. We ride Monday at lunch (20mi), Tuesday after work (35mi) Wednesday at lunch (20mi) and Thursday after work (25mi)

Each of us do distance rides on Saturdays too, usually together.

I've had a hard time making my schedule work for all 5 days/week lately, but I always ride at least 3-4 days/week. NE Indiana is super flat, so riding out here is way different than where you're at, I imagine. No elevation, so my top speeds out here (I think I maxed at 37 or so once? I had a slight decline helping me) are pretty much pedal power.

I've been working a lot on getting my pace up to race pace. Out here, on flat land, 20mph and up is good to not humiliate yourself....at least with the guys I've been riding with. We had a segment the other day where our group was running two wide, and the front was pulling us at about 26 for a few miles. Really fun.

Alone, I'd guess probably pace about 19mph for up to 50 miles or so now, and that's come up from 16-17 earlier this summer.

I wish this thread had more action. :(

Anyone riding tonight? I have a quick 20 after work, and 75 on Saturday. Ended up with a new Selle Italia saddle this week that I really like, Went mountain biking last saturday, got some new Issi cliplesses for the MTB...

Someone broke into my garage last night and stole my Norco, so no. No riding.... There's smoke coming from Washington that put a damper on riding for the week as well. It was a 10+ hazard for a few days, but they just discovered that there was a spider in the sensor that was fucking with it and it's actually 4/10. I could have been riding the fucker this week without lung hazard. :(

I'z le sad. I wish my insurance deductible was lower.

Loop - I love the fact that 20 miles is just a quick little jaunt for you. That 75 should be a fun one this weekend, hopefully you guys are getting some nice weather out there, it is hot as balls here today, and muggy taboot. I thought you were switching to a Fizik saddle, how'd you get the Selle Italia?

SFM - DUDE that SUCKS! Thieves are lowest form of life.

I had a sweet ride yesterday at lunch, ran up the hill to the university and back in time for a meeting. I also rode to work today, so I'll have about 12 miles on the way home, taking a new route home that I setup using the Strava route creator. Its the way I ride to work, but I have never taken it home - a long ascent vs the really steep short hills that have been kicking my ass. The wife is out of town this weekend, so I plan to take a couple rides, hoping to get one in over 20 miles. I only need about 40 km to get my first badge on Strava - woohoo!

Oh no! That's awful! :(

People suck.

I know some companies let you register serial #s, not sure if Norco was one or if you did it but that's still a long shot.

Damn dude, mojo sent.

I've gotten out 2 days this week. Just little 12 mile jaunts, yesterday was deadlift day at the gym, there was not much "go" in the old legs last night but I did it.

Hope to get in 20 or so on Sunday.

Its been gorgeous weather, if a bit breezy since I haven't been riding a ton, but I'm trying to take advantage of it since its supposed to get back to normal August/Early september weather next week in the 90s.

Now I'd like to take a moment to brag on my wife:

Not only did she ride RAGBRAI this year, she also completed her first metric, and US centuries. And she's starting to take the bus to work on Wednesdays with her bike so she can ride home. She'd do it more, but she works a 2nd job M,T,TH so it doesn't really work out for that.

Lets just say she's completely KILLED me in miles this year. She isn't fast, but she gets there and just keeps plugging away and is totally awesome. :D

Last night was fast. No wind (finally) and a perfect 73 degrees! Stayed over 20mph the whole ride. Super great ride, group of 5. I pulled for about 8 miles.

Didn't like the Fizik I tried, and the same friend had the Selle Italia, so I tried that, and felt a lot less interference with my hip flexors, so...winner.

I'm watching your rides on Strava, and you're doing great dude! Keep enjoying it!

Thanks man! I enjoy following you as well, and I'm trying to implement a similar group lunch ride at my office each week. I made it home last night without having to stop due to sheer exhaustion. It was the slowest ride yet, but I felt like a champion when I pulled up at my house, lol. It confirmed my thought that I do better on the long ascents compared to the quick steep climbs. My buddy says it is common for my size (6'2", 240lbs) and not to get discouraged because I do great on flats and downhills. The good thing is that San Diego is all mesas and hills so I have lots of terrain to train on and plenty of goals I'm setting and hitting. Plus I've dropped about 10 lbs in this first month.

Does anybody know a current production model that comes with Sram Force 22 stock, by chance? I'm looking at the current line-up for various manufacturers and I really hate the burnt orange color of the 2015 Norco Tactic SL and it looks like next year they're dropping the Sram makeups. Just curious. Maybe I should shell out for the new E-Tap Red... Haha, nope.

Got in a 22 mile ride on Saturday, and probably had plenty left in the tank for another 10-15. Gonna have to up my goal for my long ride this weekend, or introduce more climbs...

Sorry SFM, I am not too hip on what models come with which components. :idk: Does that mean you got some insurance payout for the theft?

I'm apparently failing at google because all I see are them with Shimano groupos.

But yeah, I know jack about components anymore except a little bit for touring stuff.

Got 12 in today. It was squat day so my legs were roasted. I tried to outrace the rain, I failed.

But man, it felt good to get out.
