Sounds exactly like a cranked Plexi, which is to say, it sounds like SEX!

:rawk:

BroChris, you know I love ya man, but I HAVE to disagree.
I RARELY hear ANY Plexi or Super Lead that sounds anywhere NEAR like that stock, truly.
I have heard modded ones come close, and even the Holy Grail of Ed's Plexi does NOT sound
that good to me in isolation...

That one that Ralphie has, is seriously something special when it comes to GREA Marshall tone,
at least to my ears!

Fair enough, mang ~ you know I'm not even gonna argue on this point. I'm a fresh convert to the Marshall camp and quite a n00b still. I'm quite sure there are differences I just haven't learned to pick up & distinguish yet, y'know? All I know is I love what I heard. :)

Oh man,
No argument intended! I just love that tone too!
I hear so many that flub out on the bottom end,
have harsh and ratty sounding speakers, too much high end,
too much compression, the list goes on and on.

I think the reason this sounds SO good is that built in variac.
Using it, you avoid most of those problems I listed because
You aren't driving so much volume through the speaker cab and
speakers!

That tone, but more so the playing, just knocks me out... YOU will make ANYTHING sound
OUTSTANDING bro! Seriously there too!

That tone though, is seriously one of the BEST Super Lead tones I have heard... Blown away!

Brother G!!

Thanks again for the kinds words. The spec on this thing is Killer but it's the variac that is doing the work ;)

Hope all is well !!

Howdy!!!

I can shed some light on this subject since I've learned a ton .
A really great Plexi spec cranked on 10 will get you close but it will not have as much gain, focus and hang time that this amp gets without a variac or something else ;) . Most of the time a cranked Plexi spec will sound like AC/DC, which is still a killer sound, but in order to get that extra thing that I'm getting, the variac is a must.

Killer sounds and playing.Reminds me alot of my purple quickrod in plexi gear with the gain 3/4 of the way up.But yours is definitely more spongy/variac.

Thanks !

The variac most definitely sponges out the tone but in a good way. Also makes the notes leap out IMHO!

I've been really ill with flu almost since I got them lol. Setup the style 2 first as didn't wanna mess up the CS taking the neck off lol until I'd done it first with the style 2. But brought the style 2 to rehearsal last night and it was great. Gonna setup the CS for standard this weekend but almost considering putting 9-46 on it (I use 10-52 on everything) as it plays so sick in Eb with 9s right now but they're like rubber bands to me.

Sounds killer! As far as recording this amp, what did you do as far as eq, double tracking, etc?

Oh Man, Sorry to hear about the Flu. A lot of people I know have been hit by that sucker. I use 9's on all my guitars but all but one are tuned to standard tuning. My Eb has that rubber band feel Bu I actually love that hahaha. I wish my Band tuned to Eb but no such luck!

They are great guitars and I think that you will be ok with 9's in standard tuning but it will spoil you since you usually use 10's :)

Thanks!

The amp is really easy to record. All I used in this clip was guitar straight into the amp. The amp is a bit on the Dark side when cranked, so I used a sure SM57 pointed straight at the cone and that's about it. I used Sonar for software and added verb/delay later. It's just one track and I just hit record.

Yeah I'm in standard w 10-52 on everything but may try 9-46 on the charvels though for a change. They both came to me setup in Eb though oddly from different sellers and yeah this flu bug is a bitch lol.

Wow, this is the best sounding fortin modded amp I have ever heard and that says a lot although this is more up my alley as I am not a metal player for the most part. I like the slight fizz surrounding the notes on top and the natural compression that makes the amp sound like its playing itself. Are you selling this or a reissue with same mod package? I also have some questions about some amps I believe are yours listed on eBay (fortin modded Marshall's)??

I started out using 9's years ago but when we started playing out a lot I switched to 10's for a few years straight up until I grabbed another guitar with 9's and just fell in love with them lol. I've been using 9's ever since and now that I'm an old fart, I'm not man enough for 10's lol :)
Hope you kick the flu real soon! That's way to long to be feeling like crap!

This amp is actually a prototype that I was working on with Mike. We were thinking about possibly releasing it, but to be honest with you, I wasn't sure if anyone would dig it because there were so many plexi style amps being released at the time.

I might ask Mike to revisit this but I'm not sure if he can given his busy schedule now with Randall!

Yes, Those are my Fortin Modded Marshalls up on E-bay. They are actually 3 gain stage mods that were based off of Mikes Bones amp.

They have plenty of gain on tap but if you wanted modern type gain, a boost would be needed (takes really well to boosts to!)

I have to get some clips going of those but I've been so pinned down with band offers and work that I haven't had much time!

If you have any questions about them, Let me know!

All the best!
