You should put the EQ's head to head. The Slates are probably better if you're using stock EQ's, but probably not better if your referring to your outboard stuff. I'd be REALLY interested to hear you comparison thoughts on those though
I'm pretty convinced that without any outboard shit the Slate stuff gets you in pro ballpark with relative ease. I'd like for that to be true in most cases.
Only real outboard stuff I've got is the ART Pro Channel. The EQ on that is fine if you're cutting, but man alive you do not want to boost any frequencies at all with it.
I do have a couple "colorful" EQs from other companies. That could be interesting. I think I like the Slate VBC better than the compressor on the ART for bass. Haven't tried it with vocals yet, but the ART is excellent for taming the way vocs jump around in the mix if you're not careful. It'd be hard to beat that.
