you can use the P2 as a stompbox. The effects loop on this amp is crap. $140 is a deal. Was there anything wrong with it?

The dude said it cuts out sometimes at volume, but its only for a few seconds and its intermittent. I read about this online before I bought it, too, and a lot of people were having issues with the master volume being too high or something...so the solution was to set the channel and masters more evenly. I jammed it for about 2 hours at practice last night and it didnt cut out once. And, it sounds fucking fantastic and gets me the volume that I wasnt getting out of my power amp/215 setup. Plus, I dig that it has 2 gain types. The one with the contour gets that Pantera tone in spades!!

My Marshall 8100 head did the same thing at volume.

I think its a SS thing...probably something in the circuit that protects the amp from overloading or overheating or something. In any case...it didnt happen at practice, and live, the volume will be lower because we'll be miced....so its not really an issue, at least right now. I can always use the 5150 live, too.

How does the P1 into the Randalls effects return sound?

I dunno...didnt try it. Through the 5150 FX loop, it sounds nearly identical to a 5150.

Does it still have heavy gain at practice volume, or do they need to be cranked? I noticed the tech 21 us steel likes to have volume to get crunchy.

Are you talking about the Randall or the P1?

Here are clips of each at band volumes...

Randall: http://tonefinder.com/?section=id&value=14553

P1: http://tonefinder.com/?section=id&value=14517

I have no problems getting solid high gain tones at high volumes.

My bad. I was saying does the P1 still crunch good at bedroom volumes.

Ahh, ok...I thought you meant band practice volumes. I did jam it at lower volumes through the power amp setup, and I didnt notice anything weird. I mean...it sounds like a 5150 no matter how I've used it....direct, band practice, lower volume band practice. I think direct, they sound really good through monitors, nice and cheap headphones, computer speakers, TV speakers...they just sound really good. However, running it through a power amp and cab....THATs where the fuck its at!!

I've noticed some amps and pedals like to be cranked to get a nice crunch. I've had Tech stuff that barely had crunch at low levels, but screamed at high volumes.

I dunno about tech 21 stuff, but the P1 doesnt have that issue. I ran it one time through the FX loop on my 5150, and you have to use the level control on the P1 to control volume. Had to keep the level low to not go deaf, but yeah...shit sounded like a 5150. So, I dont think you have anything to worry about on that end.

I'll vouch for what Raf's saying here. I run my P1 through the 8100 return some and you can turn it down to whisper and it doesn't seem to change the sound any from cranked up. It changes through my little Tubecake 1.5 watt, but that amp is very colorful and adds some interesting harmonics and overtones at higher volumes, so I don't think it has anything to do with the P1 itself.

Thanks guys. Anybody know how the tube cakes compare with the EHX Magnums?

The tube cakes are only 1.5 and 3 watts, I think. Compared to the EHX stuff at 22 and 44. I had the 44 for a while, and it was great.

I've plugged the SS-30 into the return of several amps and I can get unbelievable tones at bedroom volumes. It's solid state perfection. Consistent tone at all volumes.

I can even get ridiculous gain at volumes so low that I can hear the strings more loudly than the speaker.

The Tubecakes are more of an option at home. I really doubt they'd keep up with all but the quietest of drummers.

I like the SS 20, it sounds great. Man I played a few distortion pedals, and I hate that mid freq knob some of them have. I can never get the mids to sound right. I'm really not sure what to get right now lol.

Get mah P1 :cop:

I've found that recording direct I have a really hard time getting the mids to sit where I want them, but live, I dont really have any issues...or miced...or whatever. P1 through 5150 FX loop, miced sounds like a 5150 miced.

I wish the P1 could be used out front, for a clean-ish "pedal platform" / big headroom amp.

I still wanna get one eventually for use with my Laney, as it has an FX loop. The Mrashlals dont.

So is this thread just for high-end SS amps, or is it safe to mention a Crate VTX350H here?

The VTX350 was the best amp crate made. it sounded killer from what I remember. All of crates SS amps needed a full eq on the solo channels. I really wanna try out the new Randall RGs. I think it or the AMT stonehead would be a great buy.

I only have a couple of hybrid preamps (Rocktron Piranha, Hughes & Kettner Access)...can I join in here? :D
