One thing's for sure, Walmart didn't decide to allow people to do this out of their own generosity. They did it because they figured they were getting free money too.

One lady knew she had $0.49 on her ebt card and was detained for trying to buy over $700 worth of product right as the ebt system was up and functioning properly again. Wal mart graciously opted to not press charges as long as she left behind the merchandise. Nice of them.

I worked in a grocery store in high school and one of my favorite things to see was some emaciated alcoholic come in, drop $75 on their EBT card then have a separate transaction to buy a basket full of plastic jug vodka with cash. There were still plenty of people who looked like they had recently fallen on hard times who came in and just bought food with their cards, but those instances where someone was obviously just gaming the system would really stick in your craw.

I know, CSB.

When you treat people like animals, as we tend to treat our poor and our homeless, they tend to act like animals.

Bravo.

The world makes sense.

Just remember kids... Since this happened once or twice at a Walmart, it's obviously the way every single person in America who's low income acts.

We have a similar system here in Trinidad to your EBT card system... the difference its monitored for food items only, if it's found that a grocery has sold alcohol or tobacco products to a person using their card the grocery gets fined and could lose their eligibility to be a store that can accept the Gov't Assistance Card.

giving people a card with free money on it to spend as they choose is treating them like an animal?

Where do you fit in to all of that?

Or are you free from scrutiny because you are enlightened from sociology and civics classes you become indoctrinated with?

Or from the bullshit Walter sovchek story you tell about watching friends die face down in the muck in a position you knowingly volunteered for?

We all do it, myself included, but that doesn't make it right.

It is the same way in the USA, EBT is for food and home care products etc only.

But I've lost count how many times I've been approached at a food store by someone wanting to pay for my groceries with their EBT card and have me give them the cash instead. They even offer to give me $100 on their card in exchange to $80 cash or something. Pretty common around here.

lol...

Is it now...

So confining our poor/minorities to ghettos isn't treating them like animals? Before you say "they can leave the ghetto" I'll head you off and ask, can they really? Two of my friends grew up in Compton. I used to hang out at one of their places when we were all stationed at Pendleton. One was killed in Iraq and the other is still in. He's a GySgt in the Marines. He got out of the ghetto, avoided joining MS-13 the only way he could. By joining the military. He became a lifer risking his life over and over because the only real option open to him was to go back and because he's from El Salvidor, basically become a part of MS-13.

Most people have only a few options for getting out of the ghetto. The military, playing ball/athletic scholarships/academic scholarships etc. The problem is by the time they reach the age of majority many kids have a conviction for a crime of some sort hanging around their neck which bars them from decent employment. Many of the girls have a kid. etc. Sure, it's their fault. It's all their fault that they didn't study hard enough in their school that's falling down. That they didn't prioritize education over not getting shot, or eating, or making sure their younger siblings stayed fed. It's totally their fault that police in places like NY overwhelmingly enforce policy like stop-n-frisk in ghetto areas resulting in drug convictions that follow people around forever.

The fact that you mentioned the ghetto at all completely enforces my point that we treat our poor like animals.

Thanks.

I did as well. Spent a whole year homeless. As in, lived in a car, lived under a freeway overpass, crashed on a friends couch for a week, Scored a motorhome at one point to sleep in, etc.

I'm sure it was my fault. I should have reached down and pulled my 15yo bootstraps a bit harder.

EDIT: I've been told that in America you don't qualify as "Poor" if you own a car. Does that mean when my mom and my siblings and I were living in ours we weren't "Poor" at all?

and i got out the same way, in the military. no one in my family was doing anything to change their condition. it was sad to watch. they had some legitimate rough shit go down, and it broke their spirit.

i got out after my six years, moved somewhere else with my new life skills, and i'm a normal dude, making a pretty good wage, working 12 hour shifts in high tech + school + a band.

i WANTED to be educated, so i did it with the chances afforded me.

not everyone can do this, i know. but man there are ways to AT LEAST not proliferate the fucking tragedy but buying into the mindset.

:wank:
why do you think they do that?

lol,
you took one part there and totally changed the subject.

you come in blaming others for the rampage at wal mart and then you backtrack out of it. nothing is ever anyone else's fault unless it is a republican, right? bonus points for saying you don't like obama to add some sort of credibility for your constant hard-on you get from blaming republicans. super bonus points for saying in another thread than not all racists are republians but most if not all republicans are racist.

you are, in fact, one of the most narrow-minded bigots i have ever come across and that says something b/c i live in alabama. i'll bet if i do a quick search i can find some threads where you say something about most/all Christians being horrible people too.

yay!

magical fucking unicorns and people who commit crime, like stealing from wal-mart, aren't at fault = your world. :loon:

if your perceptions were indeed reality, my moniker would be madsasquatch.

You're the only one doing that. This was a specific story about two specific incidents. Actually, I blamed the corp America retailer of choice for taking advantage of the system.

We get it, you're fed up with people not engaging in your pity party.
