With the possible exception of the university professors, most of them probably have cars that cost more than you make in a year. A couple of the Professors are millionaires because they retired from the business world at a fairly young age and decided to teach Finance or Marketing.
So yeah, they pay taxes.
If that were the case, why do I need to register all of my vehicles? Why do I have to pay fuel taxes for every car that gets fuel?
Do you suppose that it's due to a prorated share that particular vehicle uses of the road?

Actually, gas tax pays for upkeep. How much wear and tear does a 16 lb bike with a 170 lb rider cause to the road smart guy?
Doesn't matter how much damage it does, their vehicle hasn't paid it's fair share (isn't that the line you love so much?) in fees/taxes for the road they're riding on. That's the premise here.
If they ride on the road, they should pay registration, have a license plate so I can report them running stop signs and red lights, be insured in case they damage my property and pay a petroleum tax for the tires they use that goes towards maintanence of the roads.

I don't like people that behave dangerously on the road but come on bicyclists do not have the monopoly on that. I know guys who ride bikes very safely, I know guys who drive recklessly and vice-versa. A jerk is a jerk no matter what he's riding/driving.

If they are riding on bike paths, public parks that's a different story. But a bike on the road IS just another vehicle on the road. They should follow the same laws and have the same level of accountability.

Some cyclists get really pissy about the registration thing but back when I was living in Fairmont they had a few year trial of a bicycle registration process that was essentially fifty bucks for four years if you were over sixteen (license age), thirty if you were under sixteen (with carry-over through the next four years regardless of break-age), and ten if you attended their bicycles on the road safety course. It was honestly a fairly bicycle progressive town. They gave you a little state marked sticker with a license number on it that was the same type of sticker you use for the year stickers on license plates on cars, gave you a specific spot on the frame it had to sit, and if you attended the course they'd even help you clean your bike and put it on for you. It was a pretty sweet deal. For ten bucks you spend an entire day running obstacles, training on road rules and then doing a few miles out in the city with a group, learning to ride single-file and orderly on the slow roads first and then ending the day with a quick highway run if you felt comfortable with it.
If you kept your certificate that price carried over to your next bike registration too.
I'm actually shocked it didn't catch on and spread. This city could use it for sure. There's a lot of kids and teens out there that're just asking to get squished with the way they ride the roads.
I checked into it when I bought my new bike last year. There's a voluntary registry here, but the fee for it goes to upkeep on the registry and funds for parks and rec (the multi-use paths). Not exactly road upkeep.

When the various municipalities around here can maintain a road surface that's actually safe for bikes, ie, no chipseal, no grooved pavement and huge dips and potholes, and they sweep the median strip with regularity I'll happily pay a registration fee that's commensurate with the size and weight of my vehicle, and that's a percentage of what the cars pay based on how much actual bike lane there is on public roads vs. how much car-specific lanes there are.
As it is, when I was commuting to work I went through 3 $50 Continental road tires in about a 4 month period because of all the shit on the shoulder in a 8 mile stretch of just one road and despite complaining to the county roads office who was just up the road from where I worked at the time, they never swept it. Not once.
So if they'd maintain it and provide a safe place for bikes to ride I'd be happy to pay. Till then they can just fuck the hell off.

Your roads aren't my problem, call your mayor. It's also not a valid excuse- I could say the same. Roads suck, therefore I won't register my 5 vehicles.
Don't forget bikes need to pay insurance and also a fee for not using fuel (just like in CA, when you're too efficient, they add cost to fuel, bikes gets to pay their fair share on that as well).
