The new album has Paul Franklin playing steel on some of the songs, if you don't know he is then you are missing out on some of the most tasteful pedal playing ever.

i want a pedal steel. if someone gives me one, i promise not to dress like john mayer.

ive seriously wanted one for a while now. honky tonk stuff growing up, but more recently the plant/krauss album and more so even the Decemberists' chris funk. can make you cry, man.

but they are insanely pricey and really difficult, from what i understand. what do you think, spuds?

Yeah, but you can pick up lap-steel guitars for pretty cheap. Grab one, see if you take to that style of playing, and if so then you can look at finding a pedal steel for a reasonable price.

Like anything good music wise, quality costs. You can sometimes find churches or old dudes selling theirs for pretty cheap. 1500-300 for a really decent one is common... but the good thing is that they hold their value pretty damned well due to low production and growing demand. It's not easy but the learning curve isn't that sharp. I'd ideally like to transfer over to dobro one day just to dick around on. The good thing is that should you get one and get decent at it, you will always have a job in a country or honky tonk band... and that can be pretty lucrative.

The thing about steels is a lapsteel is like a harmonica - you can change tunings to fit the song's key. Pedal steel is different in that it's versatile enough to fit most keys.

I think you could use a lap steel in a minor tuning for metal. I think this has a potential for greatness. Imagine Testament's "Practice What You Preach" howling out of a steel + slide.

RE: Lapsteel... My bro-in-law used to play in a band where the guitarist played a lap steel that was loaded with an EMG single into a Mesa Express. They played roots country and bluegrass but Bob would use the dirt channel live and it got pretty rockin.

Pedal steel is awesome, any discussion of it can't be complete without mentioning Ken Greer who took it to new places IMO.
