The Jury of Peers is not American law. It's the phrase in the Magna Carta, which is British law, from 1225. The Magna Carta meant that if you were a Lord / Knight / Duke that your jury would be similar, or if you were a peasant, your jury would be too. The US was intended to have less of those class boundaries (though obviously some still existed).

US Constitutional law (6th Amendment, Bill of Rights) says " the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence."

You could argue that the authors of the Constitution assumed a jury of peers, but it doesn't quite match the earlier intention of 1225.

No. I think Martin's primary mistake was that instead of a simple medium ass-whooping (a few punches then break it off), he instead went rage-mode and started into a maximum ass whooping. This terrified Zimmerman. I think Martin wouldn't have fought at all, or would have only delivered a few punches, realizing he can't push his luck with a gun in the situation.

Sometimes when we are young we do stupid things. Occasionally, those stupid things get someone killed. This was one of those things.

I have nothing of other value to add here though.

I remember talking to my dad (who's a lawyer) when this first happened and he called this verdict to a T. Zimmerman had a legit claim of self defense and physical evidence to prove it.

Basically:

- getting out of your car = not a crime
- following someone down the street = not a crime
- stopping a person to ask what are they doing there = not a crime
- busting someone's nose = crime
- banging someone's head on the sidewalk = crime
- shooting the aggressor to make him stop = self-defense

We can argue this until the cows come home. The law is the law.

I don't understand why this ever became a national story, other than flat out race baiting to create a shitstorm. Many of my friends who are superlibs are absolutely livid about this and making it into a left wing/right wing thing... and I don't get that either. Fuck the assholes who create this shit and fuck the assholes too dumb to not be drawn into it.

It's sells newspapers/news. Our media incites this kind of behavior.

I see this as a local issue in Florida, Obama and others should have never stuck their noses where thay are not wanted. The media wanted to make this a national polarizing issue simply to stir shit to get ratings. I don't understand why people are in the streets in California and other places, it is none of their business. The local folks in Sanford Fl are not acting stupid, so why are they in California?

PSS - There are literally hundreds of kids killed in urban areas since this incident, where is that outrage? Where are those headlines and wheres the outrage?

its seriously getting to a point where my 100% non-politcal friends are standing up and being like "wow, the media is fucked"

so whats the natural course for that sinking ship? is there any turning back?

The solution is already happening and people are finally waking up to it: The train is in the middle of a derailing at 100 mph, and it is going to get ugly. I personally say we shove it over the cliff faster. The cost of the prosperity is an uneducated, disinterested public which will never understand why they lost/gave their freedom away.
