I thnk it's pretty cool that Texas had the guts to vote in a woman with Down syndrome to their house of reps.

Once again, Texas makes me ashamed to live in this state and country.

You're completely ignoring the other parts of the bill- the ones that would leave only 5 abortion clinics remaining in the entire state of Texas and make abortion effectively illegal for a huge portion of the population no matter how many weeks along they were.

This child above was born at 22 weeks? Is that not a person? Can you seriously conceive clipping that child's spine and dismembering them in utero? That is exactly what this bill seeks to outlaw.

To me this has nothing what so ever to do with religion, as I'm an atheist. It has to do with compassion and empathy for an innocent living person.

Also, the legislator who said that shit about rape kits isn't a dumbass, she's just a manipulative bitch who knows what to say to get the people whose votes she wants riled up.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not someone who backs the criminalization of all abortions. I think providing access to quality education and healthcare in our country would be a far better method of decreasing both unwanted pregnancies and abortions. But I also don't think dogmatic trumpeting of either side's propaganda is helpful to having an intelligent debate on the subject.

The bad part of that stupid ass bill isn't the 20 week cutoff, it's that it prescribes the type of facility that can provide abortions of any type. That is going to stop 37 out of 42 places in the huge fuckin' state of Texas that currently provide abortions from doing so in the future. So, five clinics left in the entire state to handle them.

On top of that, Texas may be the last place I would expect to add some social services to help with the coming onslaught of unwanted pregnancies.

im no scientist, but if it cant be done medicinally and passed naturally, shouldn't be done. that being said, however, before that point should be completely legal and completely free of the persecution of the religious right. period.

Its goddamned ridiculous how uneducated some of our representatives are. I'm straight dumbfounded and ashamed as a Texan.

I agree 100%.

Does this mean that those five clinics are about to have a lot more business and make more money?

Im 110% Pro-Choice, -- but late term abortions are some real wicked-nasty shit, they really are. That philly abortion doctor was not doing the pro choice crowd any favors

I have no issue with fillibustering (its part of our debate process) and she has every right to do it as long as she observes the rules.. The very "odd thing" is how the media was kinda hostile and unfriendly to Rand Paul when he did the very same thing about drones a couple of weeks ago

Lets see how this continues to play out in the media

Hmm, really? I usually disagree with rand on about everything, but I supported him in that even though it was meaningless. I didn't see a ton of negative coverage on it....maybe the media I've selected were ok with that one though.

And yes, late term abortions are nasty. I wish there were no abortions, but I'm not naive enough to believe life is simple enough to ever have that happen, damn what idiotic laws are passed. Its the other aspects of this law that are the most troubling to me. And that Rep's moronic statements.

I'm also not really sure why the Philly guy gets brought up though (not by you initially I know). The dude was performing often illegal procedures in criminally negligent situations. (Great work keeping up on inspections...though I have no idea how many inspectors there were for that sort of thing.) That's what most pro-choice people want to AVOID by having accessible and safe clinics. I

'm sure proponents of the Texas law would say "Oh, we ARE caring about safety..see, they have to go to surgical places." But that doesn't mean accessible. Which sadly just leaves the door open for more places like that Philly sicko to operate in. Ugh.

Sorry, rambling thoughts on the subject. Abortion saddens me greatly, but the militant "Right to Lifers" do the world no favors in their misguided efforts to end it wholesale. :(

Good post ovid :thu:

The media outlets did pick on Rand Paul a lil, I saw some outlets (many) they called it gimmicky, hes doing it for 2016, its a publicity stunt, etc, - --that really iritatted me a lil bit, I wonder if they would now say the same thing about this situation

Im somewhat conservative guy, (as you may know lol), but I am and will ALWAYS be pro choice with abortion, you made some good points in your post. My 02 is Its 35+ years already (Roe vs Wade) its is *the law* of the land, let it go guys lol

I'm of the mind if the people who are so willing to go to extreme measures to "protect the unborn" would be willing to go to those same measures to help those already living....maybe we'd one day have less "at risk" unborn to begin with.

One can dream right?

For an alternative take on late term abortion, a friend of the family had one at something like 24 weeks. The reason was that in utero testing turned up that the fetus was going to come out severely handicapped, as in malformed limbs, organs on the outside of the body and basically no reasoning power at all. Birthing the kid would have put the mother's life at jeopardy. Caring for the kid would have bankrupted the family, as it was going to need special care 24/7 for as long as it lived. They were devastated, but reluctantly decided to terminate the pregnancy.

As awful as making that decision was, I hate the idea that a legislative body has completely taken that option off the table for people in similar situations in an entire state.

I'm going to go ahead an gander that any fetus that comes out around 20 weeks is severely FUCKED in the long run.

I believe in Texas they refer to this as smear the queer. The queer being anybody that doesn't fit the "proper" agenda.
