He feels the same way about edrums as you feel about ear plugs lol.
So he needs to learn how to play quietly. A good drummer doesn't have to play loud all the time.
You're joking right? In what world has any drummer ever played "quieter" lol. This is dreamland you are thinking of lolol
Not arguing with the concept but we all know this is never going to happen lol.
if i ever met this drummer, he'd clearly be playing the mccormick and schmicks circuit that would pretty much relegate me to the trash heap of aging gen-x neanderthal rockers for said player. although it's largely true in the first place.

The main problem with drums are the cymbals. My drummer has a set of low volume cymbals she uses at practice and it's great. Maybe try to get a set of those and see how that goes.
Our drummer brought some low volume cymbals out with a shit ton of holes in them, and we moved around our amps. Shit was much quieter, and sounded much better

Yeah that's exactly what I'm talking about. It makes a huge difference.

He's so loud that we have gotten complaints from people at the bars when we're playing. We have to turn everything else up to hear ourselves, and it's just unreasonable. I don't know. I'm not a drummer, but I've had other drummers tell me that a good drummer has the ability to play quieter.

yeah I tend to agree with that but it depends on what he wants to do. If he's playing Top 40 or things like funk, pop, jazz etc.. then yeah better learn to play quiet. If he's a rock/metal drummer playing originals than it doesn't matter.
And I get not wanting to play an e-kit. But he should be open to getting things like low volume cymbals or drum heads for practicing. These are not that big a deal and makes practice easier on everyone. Then just let loose live.

I've been using V-Moda ear filters for the last few years. Took some getting used to but indispensable now. I use them every single rehearsal and gig. They lower the decibels but you can still hear the music clearly, I highly recommend them.
