This.... after all the hardware issues the 360 went though when first released and now all these grey areas with the online requirements etc I'm sitting back and waiting for the dust to settle.

Man. My bro-in-law bought a 360 right at release. First game he popped in, froze at title screen. Had to send it in. Man, I hope they don't repeat that shit this time around.

I would like to think they've learnt their lesson by now... like I told a friend of mine who was bitching about Xbox reliability etc, I've had mine for over 4 years now and no issues...

bad ideas all around and reeks of money grab. online all the time sorry I don't play online and don't want to be forced to. what if internet is down then i'm shit out of luck, fuck that. used games are part of the gaming economy and trying to get rid of that is not good for anybody. how many people trade in toward the purchase of a new game? wtf the companies still make their money on those games sold. take that away and people will have to think real hard about buying new. this will totally kill some games if they don't get great reviews. the gaming industry just seems poised to shoot itself in the foot big time with this coming generation. wish they'd worry more about making a good game playing machine than all the extra bulshit that is only geared toward making them extra money and isn't needed to play games at all.

Additionally it looks like the PS4 is going to have DRM too. Sony have been asked quite strongly several times about this since the X1 launch and they have walked right around the question. Sad times.

bottom line is Sony will have no choice BUT to include DRM if the developers tell them they have to, a console without games is a lovely paper weight and Sony cannot make ALL the games for the PS4 alone...

It will come down to how the implement it really.... if they take the steam approach i don't see it being that bad... the only person that will be screwed are stores selling 2nd hand games.. if they are charging high prices 6 months to a year after a game is released then it will be pretty fucked up... in the end by having the DRM they are creating a massive new revenue stream for themselves, the question is how greedy are they going to be about it.

Sure, there is no way the publishers will allow it on only one system. They'll want them all locked down. They may as well get that fact out of the way quickly though. It's not the kind of bombshell you want to drop at E3 and you can only fob people off for so long before they want the answers.

I do wish this DRM crap would go away though. All it does is harm the legitimate consumer.

Sony is playing the wait and see game with Microsoft. Microsoft has caught ALL the shit for DRM and Sony has stayed very hush hush about it, which I guess is a smart move since now they can say..Hey.. we don't want to do it but those guys are making us... BOO THEM!!! To me DRM is ok BUT only if they follow the steam model i.e. games being sold for SUPER low prices after they have been on the market for a while. It would be cool to be able to buy a game for $10, download it and not have to worry if the disc is damaged etc... time will tell...

No one comes out of the DRM thing looking great thats for sure, other than perhaps the publishers as they can pass the buck easily. For me its an issue of being able to do what I want with my property and not being able to dictate its resale value. If I have to sell it through a licensed store I lose that. More often than not its the consumer who gets the shaft and it sucks. I know there is currently a case against steam about license resale which should shed some light on this although I don't know the details. Certainly if its European based steam are unlikely to win but that won't make many legal waves elsewhere.

to me the Publishers are the ones who would WANT DRM more than the console providers since they will be getting a cut of the transaction when a game is passed to another user and in the end THEY have the power to give it the yes or no since it's their IP. So I just keep coming back to the steam model, they have shown its profitable and developers clearly are content with that model since they have been supporting it since it's been available.... I guess all questions will be answered @ E3 in a few weeks

The publishers have wanted to close down or control the used market for years as they lose revenue to it. Main thing is that it sucks for consumers. We lose.

I dunno... it might not be a total loss... it depends on the implementation and how greedy the publishers will be... you could say that they were pricing new games @ $60 each because they know they aren't going to see a cent from the almost inevitable resale of that game and have to make 100% of their profits from that sale but now they know that once that game changes hands they will get paid they might be inclined to drop prices... OR make the purchase of a 2nd hand game cheaper than what Gamestop etc were charging since they have initially made their money from the first sale so now everything is just icing on the cake... also since games have to be installed in the new Xbox it means a direct download service can be done cutting out the distribution costs....

I can see people initial fear, but it's possible there could be some positive results from this.. this is what I'm just playing the wait and see game... if it all goes to hell I'll build a PC and get a steam account..

Yeah, the more they explain the details the more "Really MS?" it gets.

It doesn't have to be "always online," it just has to log on once every 24 hours.

MS won't ban used games...but those evil publishers might.

We promise your kinect won't spy on you. And we'd never, EVER allow it to be used as a surveillance tool. Ever. Trust us. Really.

Oh, and remember, its also a DVR now. Cause, you really wanted that!

And it looks like a VCR...that's cool, right?

Oh, and we changed chips, so unless someone whips up a 360 emulator you can't play any of your old games on it so its sort of like 1994 all over again in that respect. But, WE won't make an emulator even though that's something that might actually interest people in purchasing our product....

Now, Sony's PS4 probably isn't any better on these respects (well, maybe aesthetically) but at least they're staying mum about them.

Yep. Who gives a shit about Gamestop anyway, it was only a matter of time before they went out of business. Flea markets. Good riddance, and I hope something more efficient takes its place. Screw publishers as well, who needs'em. I just wanna plug something in to my local redbox, download a game in to it, pay the machine, go home and play. Screw publishers.
