yeah... not really comparing mortality rates as much as how fast Ebola spread over there despite it being not that hard to contain Vs how easy Carona can be spread....

There's some chatter among those studying the virus that it appears to be a similar strain to what SARS was, but has markers from HIV1 included in it. Which is leading some to believe it was manufactured. And in any conversation where that comes up, everybody starts pointing the finger at "that other guy." Americans that aren't politically affiliated are blaming China. Russia is blaming America. Democrats are blaming Republicans. Republicans are blaming Democrats. Germany has been mentioned a few times. The hysteria surrounding it is DEFINITELY overblown as the fatality rate isn't that high at the moment, though it does sound like the outbreak in the middle east is being under-reported.

I pretty much despise that people are using this as a political bargaining chip. At the moment it's a little more than flu level bad. Our government being a giant ball of clusterfuck isn't helping with the perception among us commoners, but I do think between the media wanting EVERYTHING to be a panic inducing shitfest and the way most people seem to be right on the edge is making this out to be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY fuckin bigger than it needs to be.

I think the whole thing is GERM Warfare. China made this virus to destroy the world. It's like a Nuke attack but not as fast and hard to prove. The virus was created right in the heart of China's manufacturing city.

This is my story and I'm sticking to it :spam:

I travel to China and Korea regularly and made several trips while SARS was a thing. The hype and fear (warranted or not) around COVID-19 is much larger than it was for SARS. It's not really quantifiable, but the "mood" is also different somehow. Combine that with bumbling, moronic "leadership" and an endless desire to hype news stories for ratings supremacy and, yeah, good times.

The company I work for has design centers in Wuhan (Hubei), China and Daegu, Korea. For reference, Daegu (at last report) had the highest incidence of COVID-19 infections in Korea. I haven't been to either this year, but we have people coming and going to both locations frequently. I worked directly with a person from our Daegu office last week - he arrived in the U.S. just before the announcement of infections in Korea and returned a few days ago. A person that works in our office returned from Wuhan late last week (they told him to stay home for 14 days and see a doctor before coming back to work). Most of our facilities in China and Korea have forced office employees to work from home. The folks in the manufacturing facilities are working staggered shifts and being told not to congregate in break areas to lower the number of close-proximity groups. I doubt that approach will be very successful (two employees have family members that have been infected and are hospitalized), but they are trying to keep from shutting down production. We are already experiencing parts shortages and supply chain disruptions. The stock market is certainly overreacting, but the reality is that there are tangible effects on the economy and there will be more. I work in IT and support engineering applications. We've started thinking through options to accommodate a significant increase in teleworkers, should the need arise. I'm not a Prepper, but this thing warrants monitoring at the very least.

I thought I shared this link early on, but if you haven't seen it, it's an interesting tracking website from Johns Hopkins. I've been watching it since it came online. The nerd in me appreciates the business intelligence behind the data mapping while the twisted inner-child wants to change the title of the page to "Zombie Apocalypse". :D

On the plus side though, if this does go nuclear strength and kills 5 billion people we don't have to worry about climate change anymore.

Not saying to ignore it, but I think it's a bit overblown.

Oh give me a fucking break.
Overblown? Definitely. Some left wing conspiracy to make Trump look bad? If the left had the capacity to manipulate at that level he wouldn’t have been president in the first place.

Rush said it, so it must be true

Are people actually worried about the virus itself???

I just figured everybody was freaking out because this feels like 2008 when the market tanks every single day. :(

I thought the big problem was the supply chain disruption due to the uncertainty of when China will return to normal. :idk:

Actually this is a good time to continue. As stocks drop your dollar goes much father shares wise, so when it rebounds you rebound better than you would have if you stopped.

- the death rate at the epicenter of the epidemic (Hubei) is 2%. That's considered low risk. It's twice the rate of regular influence but 5x lower than the SARS rate was.
Outside of the epicenter the death rate is 1%, same as the flu.

-100% of the confirmed deaths are people who had compromised immune systems to begin with. Which is bad news for the elderly, small children and people with chronic autoimmune diseases. But healthy adults should be able to go through the virus incubation cycle with only mild symptoms, which lasts between 5-14 but more often in the lower end than the higher.

- regular higiene mesures like washing your hands and keeping a 7-10ft distance from someone coughing ARE effective preventive measures.

I work for a global travel company for a day job and we get daily updates directly from the WHO. They're available for the public too.
I suggest you read those instead of sensationalist media eager to turn fear into clicks/hits.

The only thing I'll say is that we can't trust any of the data coming out of China. They haven't been forthcoming and have sought to suppress the information from getting out as long as they can manage.

Granted WHO, other countries... yes we can rely on that information. China... No.

On the financial front, if you're not going to retire in the next year or so then you shouldn't be stopping your 401K/IRA/ect contributions and you should continue. If you stop you're missing an opportunity to buy when shares are the lowest they will be for quite some time.
