Re: NEED HELP WITH KNEES, PLEASE
What do you mean by "front of my knees"? Above your kneecaps? Below? behind the kneecap?
My chiro did a video series on knees... might be helpful for you if you don't have structural damage (ie, damaged tendon/ligament/meniscus)

I meant the front of the kneecap, the whole top of it. Not above, below, nor beneath.
Thanks for the video! It makes me wonder about my biomechanics being screwed.......
Yeah I'm trying to do squats, and my knees are killing me.
BTW, I can't jump rope because of the pain in my knees. Again, I'm not that overweight. I'm 178 lbs @ 6 feet. I'd like to lose around twenty lbs. But I don't think my weight is causing the problems.
I went to the doctor on Thurs, and I went in saying I want to go off of statins for a month to see if it helps. He was against it. Then, he checked out range of motion for my arms, and legs. He then agreed that I should try cutting out the statins to see if it helps...

Strange ... Usually Stains will get you in more than just one area? Hope it works for you

I'm like 195 @ 5'11" so don't feel too fat :P
I also couldn't be paid enough to take statins. So many terrifying stats about them... I would probably slap my doctor if he recommended I start on them.
About your knees, I would think probably tendonitis or arthritis of some sort would make the most sense. Here's another video for ya... kstar is legit.

Re: NEED HELP WITH KNEES, PLEASE
First, a couple things:
- I'm a qualified yoga instructor
- I've had knee issues (cartilage damage, LCL tear, a few other things)
- I'm flat footed
My advice:
- By all means, get yourself checked out by an MD. The statin thing might be the cause. I don't have any experience with them myself, so I can't really give you any further advice on that front
- You might want to switch to wearing minimalist/barefoot shoes. Take it slow if you do so, as it's easy to overdo it while you're getting adjusted to them. They help your joints to get into line all the way up your body in a way that orthotic inserts just don't. My knees really improved when I switched over from regular shoes with inserts
- Definitely take up yoga, but do so under supervision of an instructor. Let them know your issues, and they will give you adjustments. Doing yoga on your own as a complete newbie who has physical issues can create more problems than it solves.
- Don't fret too much about your weight. Dropping a few pounds might help, but you're not overweight to the point that it could be blowing out your knees
BTW, how old are you? Is there a history of arthritis in your family? Have you had knee injuries in the past?
Also, you said you ride a bike. Have you had a setup done? Something as small as having a cleat adjustment off by a couple of millimeters can create a plethora of knee issues if you are doing any kind of serious mileage.

I can't remember who or when, but I remember people doing different remedies for their joints here @ GAB.
Basically I can't sit down. I can start the downward descent, but once I get to a certain point, the sharp pain in the front of my knees makes me to drop down the rest of the way into a chair.
I can walk fine, I can ride a bicycle fine, but sitting ain't happening.
I'm trying to get back into lifting free weights, and squats. I don't have access to gym machines.
I'm open to suggestions for any kind of supplements or therapies...not so much for surgery.
TIA
When do you change your name to "long sitting member?"
When squating are you using a full range of motion? IE dropping to at least parrallel?

Re: NEED HELP WITH KNEES, PLEASE
Hi!
Just wanted to post a follow up with my thanks!
I wanted to do it scientifically, by eliminating/changing one thing at a time, but the pain was too great, so here's what I did:
1. got new orthopedic shoe inserts
2. go shoeless most of the day now...I'm lucky that I work on a computer from home and I can pull it off.
3. wear different pairs of shoes through the day....I cycle through 2 pairs, wearing each half a day. I also am cycling with my inserts...half a day with the old ones, half a day with the new ones, but I put them in different shoes each day.
4. trying to lose more weight, but haven't been successful there..
5. cut out the statins/Lipitor. I was worried about this one, b/c on my new diet, I'm eating 2-3 eggs for breakfast every day (hi protein, low fat, no carb diet). My lipid profile actually went DOWN without the lipitor!
I think the cutting out of the lipitor was the biggest factor....
So now, my knees are doing MUCH better!!!!!
I'm now able to do slow count (6 seconds down, 6 seconds up) squats with almost no knee pain!!!
That also means that the Long Standing Member can sit down whenever I want!
thanks for the help, guys!

Wow! Glad you're doing better - that's really awesome!!!
Do you think your knee pain was a side effect of the lipitor or, mostly a shoe issue?

I'm convinced it was the lipitor....but like I said, I screwed up by not doing one thing at a time.
But what the hell, I'm off lipitor, saving $, and don't need to worry about the side effects of a prescription drug!
YEAH!!

Re: NEED HELP WITH KNEES, PLEASE
good deal!
i got my knees (and ankles) in great shape going barefoot for a few years. i even managed to work my way up to be able to run 7 miles on pavement. it really does teach you how to step correctly.
i have seen syringes/needles on the side of the road so nowadays i just use zero-drop shoes. my favorite is the altra paradigm.

If your levels are good, at least you can rule out that cause.

I thought you were tired of me changing user names. Make up your mind.
