If I were a bassist I would grab a lead sheets for all the songs and follow the root note of each chord in the chord progression, and play the mode that corresponds to each chord's root note up and down, before trying to start coming up with walking lines.
So for example, taking the easiest key to talk about, in C major you have
C- Ionian (major scale)
D- Dorian
E- Phrygian
F- Lydian
G- Mixolydian
A- Aeolian (minor scale)
B- Lochrian
That will all change depending on the key you're in, but the order of modes (and their fretting patterns) will be the same providing you're aware of the key. This way when you're stepping around in the chord changes you're making diatonic choices and will in the vast majority of cases be safe.
Also this would be step 1 for "."
If you need more in depth information regarding such concepts, PM Mamberg Jr. who studied theory in pre-K

Y'all probably already know this, but when your walking, chromatic walks are always cool. I usually only go one direction chromatic, then go down the scale. Good shit

I don't mean now, of course, but once you find how far apart chords are, It's a cool little thing to do... You have to be comfy on the basics first though of course...
