The AOR volume volume and master volume are tone interactive on these, try rolling one down and the other up, as one setting is brighter than the other.
Re: AOR is here!
Yeah, I spent more time with it into a 4x12 with V30s.
Twiddled the preamp knobs for a while.
Which was better. For all out heavy gain, it totally kills.
Just crazy. Great stoner tone. If you just like to crank it up and go.
Finding a compromise between that gain and a cleanish tone is hard.
It's not a bad amp, just nothing like I was expecting.
The low output is pretty cool too. Vintage marshally.
Since there's so much gain, I might get away with putting a lower gained preamp tube in it.
That will also take the edge off of it.

Re: AOR is here!
The tubes seem good. The filter caps appear to be from 93 (maybe).
The preamp tubes were sovtek WBs, but I swapped them out.

Re: AOR is here!
Now that I think about it. The Phase inverter is in the v2 spot. I ended up putting a matched 12ax7 in that spot and the amp settled down quite a bit. There is definitely a learning curve with the EQ section. It's not typical at all.

Laney EQ is typically untypical, regardless of amp.

V2 huh?
Re: AOR is here!
I think so. I remember that it wasn't where you'd think. It's a weird design for sure. I'd have to look at the schemo.Hugh Jaynus wrote:Micter wrote:Now that I think about it. Re: AOR is here!
Well, that sounds very odd, and probably wrong.
From what I can tell the tube layout is fairly standard.
I ended up snipping the cap on the Preamp 2 pot.....which supposedly smooths out the tone a bit.
I'll probably put a lower gain tube in V1,V2 or V3 tonight, to smooth it out even more.
It's so close to being awesome.

Re: AOR is here!
I have an AOR 50 and V2 is most definitely NOT the phase inverter. V2 is the clean. V4 is the PI.

Yep.
V1 is bypassed when you use the low input.

If I can get it to be less thwacky and shrill (especially in non-AOR mode).....this amp will take over as my gigging amp.
(although it may anyway, since I could use it with pedals using the low input.....great tone.)

Agreed...the low input with pedals sounds awesome!
*EDIT* Yesterday I started playing with all the tone controls pushed in (on high input, non-AOR channel), and using a DS-1 Boost...sounds freaking awesome! Down with the thickness.

Re: AOR is here!
It really is a cool amp....very different from most amps.
I'm not really sure which series mine is? I think it's a Series I, as it doesn't say Series II on it.
Not really sure what the differences were? different amounts of bass and AOR gain amounts?

Re: AOR is here!
Also weird, when I got the amp, the voltage selector was set to 110v.
It should be 120v, right?

Re: AOR is here!
yeah, 120v.
This is a killer amp, take some time to learn the EQ, Laneys are not plug and play amps, but they sound amazing when you get the hang of them.

I wish I was playing stoner or doom again.....crank up all of the preamp knobs, and pull all of the tone knobs.........dat fuggin' tone!

I'm going to play around tonight with it, since I have practice tomorrow and would like to use my new toy. I'll have to re-do my pedal board too.

Gotta get a footswitch, and see if I can dial in a decent clean-ish and heavy gain......without it being harsh.
That middle ground is hard to find at the moment. I can dial out the edge, but then I have too much gain for clean-ish. The tone controls don't seem to take out the frequencies that I'm finding grating.
Since I snipped that cap, I haven't had a chance to try it. I'm hoping that's enough to take the edge off.

Re: AOR is here!
I can't get a "real" clean tone from this amp because my Suhr Aldrich pickups are too hot. But I don't use much clean anyway.
I'm not sure how this amp is supposed to react, but my Amp dials are strange:
The Preamp Vol 1 and Preamp Vol 2: Control amount of gain.
Preamp 1 Level: Does nothing on Non-AOR, but becomes the Preamp Vol on AOR Channel.
Master Volume works fine.

Re: AOR is here!
Yeah, after playing it I'd be satisfied with something that resembles smooth low gain overdrive. light crunch.
I don't really use my guitar's volume much, as our changes can be instant....I'd prefer to step on something......although, that would entail hitting two things....footswitch and volume reduction pedal.
I think I had settled on Preamp 1 at 3pm or full up, Preamp 2 at noon (matching volume), and the last knob set around 2-3pm.
Bass pulled at noon, mid pulled at 11pm, treble pulled at 10pm, and presence off.
I should try the same but with the treble not pulled and the presence up a little.

Re: AOR is here!
What filter cans are in those? 50/50?
Going up or down in the filtering will affect the "feel" of an amp. (lower - more "sag".. higher=more punch / balls)

yes, 50/50.

Re: AOR is here!
It's a bit hissy when plugged into the high input with the AOR on. I'll have to re-clean the inputs and the FX loop jacks, just to be sure.
when nothing is plugged into the amp, it's dead silent.......so yeah, not sure what that means.
Maybe it's just the nature of a high gain amp?

Re: AOR is here!
I think that's just the nature of AORs. Mine was like that.
Mine never sounded the same, from day to day. You could leave the knobs parked it the same place, and it always sounded different. Shut it off for an hour. Flip her back on, & she sounded totally different than when you were using it earlier. Even after I blew the tranny, & had it replaced, it was that way.
It semed really sensitive to temprature & weather too. Always sounded better when the weather was cold

Re: AOR is here!
Strange!
Yours blew a tranny too, huh? Makes me nervous!
What happened? tube issues?
What I really like about it, is that it's a bunch more raw sounding than anything else I'm using.
I've been trying to go for something not as "good" sounding.......my tone has been too refined and "nice" for what I'm doing.
Not used to having my pant legs flapping in the wind either. Always went for a tighter middy crunch tone with the JTM.
It's rather refreshing.

It doesn't have to be this way. Laney GH and VH series amps are both beasts with a ton of gain but they both are pretty damned quiet.

I dont know what contributed to it. Dude who fixed it just said it had a bad tranny. (Ive read about alot of AORs with bad transformers). I dont know if its a real common issue, or if they may had just had a bad batch of amps tehy put out.
I DO know it had brand new JJ Power tubes in it when the tranny went kablooey. It killed all of the power tubes when it went. Memeory's sketchy.. Its been about 8-9 years ago

It's not unbearable, but it isn't dead quiet either. just a constant idle hiss.
I've cleaned the pots and jacks, which is suppose to help.....
Turning on my POG really makes it hiss....that POG is noisy.
