If you have a means of adjusting the impedance of the mic input, I would highly suggest the AKG D40. Before I had the variable impedance, it was harsh and bright, but getting it down to its intended impedance turned this into a fantastic sounding mic.

I really like the e609 in the right context. Throw it in front of a warm speaker and a crunchy amp, you can capture some great tones.

When I have the extra money, I would love to snag an MD421. I did recently snag one of the CAD Live dynamic mics that uses a large diaphragm [CAD D80] to help fill the void. It is also a nice sounding mic.

It's funny how much shit people talk on the 609. It can be a bit harsh against the wrong tone, but with the right tone it sounds great. Even better if you can drop the impedance on the preamp and get rid of some of that upper end grit. It's not a mic for capturing air. Slammed right against the grill it usually works pretty good though. Proximity seems to do something for it.

Pretty much every guitar recording I've made over the last few years has been an e609. I suppose there were a couple with a 57.

I'd still like to gnab a 906 at some point just to compare them. Or double mic and blend.

Still want an SM7B and a 421 at some point too.

Meh. Just wanted to post a counterpoint.

But in the interest of interwebz drama, I'm full of butthurtz! Fuck you.

Not that my opinion really means much, but the MD421 is probably my least favourite "popular" mic - it's too scooped for my taste and ends up being a bit boomy, scratchy and hollow. And in its of-touted application as a Tom mic it fucks you over with horrible off axis phasey bleed from the rest of the kit.

My vote is for the RE-20, if it's to be a more expensive dynamic. Users include Stevie Wonder and Frasier Crane;

These are awesome, btw. Glad I bought one.

Here is a clip I did a ways back with the Splawn and Mooer Black Secret. I literally just threw the 609 up in front of the cab and recorded everything with no messing around.

Is it bad that I actually like the sound of the recording? It's not really mixed, no eq or anything.

It's got a certain push in the mid-midrange, a few hundred hz, that's pretty funky in a good way. I bet with a bassline supporting the low end it'd be nice!
