If this was a top 10 they'd be on there (Travers would be for sure, at least)

Tony Iommi
Angus Young
Scott Mellinger/Russ Cogdell
Hetfield
Leslie West
Iommi and Mellinger/Cogdell are the only dudes I even remotely sound like, but those are all guitarists that got me into loving guitar.

Can't do a top 5 - the two players that most made me want to play guitar would have to be Tony Iommi and James Hetfield.
Then, there's a crapload of others (in no particular order) that I continue to dwell on since picking up the guitar in the early '80s. Can't hold a candle to any of 'em, but I keep working at it: Young bros, Billy Gibbons, Brian May, Dave Mustaine, Scott Ian, Dave Pritchard, Michael Hedges, Ritchie Blackmore, Scott Gorham / Brian Robertson, The Edge, Eddie Van Halen, Murray / Smith, Downing / Tipton, John Christ, Keenan / Weatherman, Michael Schenker, Schenker / Jabs, Wolf Hoffmann, Brian Setzer, David Gilmore, Collen / Clark (early records), Knopfler, Clapton, Jimmy Page, Fast Eddie Clarke, Dave Grohl, Gary Hoey, Joe Walsh, Ty Tabor, Randy Rhoads, Andy Summers, Adam Jones, Alex Lifeson, Brian Setzer, Bruce Franklin / Rick Wartell

It's a tough one. There are guitar players I really like but I don't think any of their style makes it into the way I play.
In no particular order:
Stephen Carpenter
The Edge
Nick Mccabe
Mike Einziger
David Gilmour

ok i'll list 5 and stick to ones that i feel have had a very direct effect on my playing
Jimi Hendrix
Gary Moore
Ritchie Blackmore
Frank Marino
Ronnie Montrose
now before craig says i'm not a real guitar player for not listing jeff beck i'll mention that although i'm a huge fan he wasn't a big influence back when i started and honestly is beyond my skills now (same goes for yngwie malmsteen who i love but can't play like at all).

I learned the entire first Montrose album as a kid. Ronnie would be another HUGE influence on my playing.

i still play along to it all the time. every band i've been in has done Rock The Nation. i'm a big fan of Gamma as well. have a couple of live bootlegs of Montrose and ronnie could really let it loose leads wise. he didn't really play a lot of leads on the forst album but live he really tore it up.

I have to say my Classical guitar teacher influenced me way back at school. I actually e-mailed him AGES ago and didn't get a reply (I assumed he didn't know how to use e-mail properly or wasn't around anymore...). He then e-mailed me back months later saying it was great that I was still persuing guitar etc.
I thought that was rather cool. Certainly a massive influence when I first started, the guy was a legend.

It's not as though he ever played anything technically challenging, but the guy can write a song and his tone is great. Also, I've seen him live three times and the third time, he remembered me from the first time and was nice. Fan for life now.
SenatorClayDavis wrote:Fletcher Dragge
I've gone from idolizing this guy (1990-2000), to scorning him (2000-whenever) to reexamining him recently. But he's an underrated influence on my own playing, as one of the first guys playing metal-approved chugga chugga in a 90s punk band.

The thing about Trever is it's sort of impossible to separate his guitar playing from his songwriting, just the way he writes the guitar parts and how they fit into the song, and the way he approaches lead playing I think are pretty big influences on me.
And yeah, Fletcher is cool cause he's basically a metal player, but puts it into a punk context that works really well.
Both those guys have great senses of melody and composition.
