It makes sense to stick to the platform they started the initial development on though which will have been win7 with the dev kit hardware. Why bother to change it and have to rewrite drivers and all that shit?

In other news some chap over on reddit has combed all of the press releases about all the controversial stuff floating around the net on the X1. Full article here:
http://www.reddit.com/r/xboxone/comment ... es_kinect/

And a copy/paste for those who can't be arsed :p

I'm sick of seeing all the misinformation going around the gaming subreddits. It's really frustrating to see people furiously hating the X1 without having all, if any, of the details. I'll try and break this down for you guys so here we go.
To start off, the Xbox One will allow you to buy games at launch through digital download or through discs by going to a retail store.

USED GAMES
One of the X1's main feature is the ability to install the disc directly to the hard drive and play it without a disk. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a feature many asked for when the feature was added to 360, but it was only to allow the game to run better.
Contrary to popular believe, the used game does exist in the X1.
"Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games."
What can we take away from this? Easy. If you bought a disc based game, you can sell and trade it to any participating retailer. It means that game publishers will work out deals with retailers in order for the developers and publishers to take a cut of used games sales. Microsoft will not receive any money from these transactions. If you bought a digital copy, just like any digital copy, you will not be able to do this.

FIRST PARTY GAMES
"In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."
All first party games will be allowed to be resold and be given away (more of this below).

RENTING GAMES
"Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."
Microsoft and companies such as Gamefly are working on a system to make this work.

DRM--WHY?
As we saw above, you will be able install your games to your hard-drive and have your entire library available to play without putting the disc in the disc tray.
This is why the 24-hour check is required. Without this, many copies of the same game could be installed into multiple X1's and it would be absolutely crumble game sales.
The drawback to this is not being able to game offline. Microsoft has said that the final decisions to this issue have not been final. I believe if they allow you to play offline with the disc in the disc tray, this would become a non-issue.

PRIVACY
This is one of the biggest things people have been complaining about. Microsoft has already addressed the issue, but of course it fell on deaf ears. People already had their pitch forks out and had Sony on a pedestal by this point.
"You are in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused: If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you’ll need to turn it back on for these experiences."
As I've stated before, you will have the control to everything that the Kinect has to offer. If you don't want it to hear you? You can do that. If you don't want it to see you, you can do that. Don't want it to listen for the "Xbox On" while it's off, you can also do that.
If you want to learn more about the Kinect's privacy settings, you can click this link: Kinect Privacy

XBOX ONE- A GAME OF CIRCLES
Now onto the other things. As some of us know, you will be able to have a "circle" of friends, 10 people to be exact, that will be able to access your game library from anywhere (in the same region, I'm assuming..still not clear about this) at anytime (as long as you or someone else in your circle isn't playing it). This is of course how things work now, two of your friends can't play the game at the same time from one disc on two separate consoles.
This is a feature that is absolutely wonderful, but the people raging about it had not heard about it before.
"Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time."
I absolutely love this feature. For example, my cousin is 200 miles away when he's away to college and I've let him borrow LA Noire and Dead Rising. I've yet to receive those games from him. With this feature, we don't have to be close in order for him to borrow any of my games! It's crazy as to how so many people dismissed this feature because it's a big jump forward in digital technology. No longer will my friends or family have to be close to me in order for them borrow one of my games.
Important Update: New information has risen relating to this feature. You +1 friend from your circle can play the same game at the same time. Others can still play from your other library selection.

Another Important Update: DLC will be shareable through your circle. Your friend will be able to play all of the DLC that you buy. They will not need to purchase their own DLC for the game they're playing from your Xbox One.

GIVING AWAY GAMES
Do you have a game that you will no longer play? Your friend can still play it off of your Xbox (if they're in your circle). What if they're not? As long as they have been in your friend's list for 30 days, you can give a game away to your friend, free of charge! This can only be done once per copy.
Disclaimer: Microsoft has left it up to the publishers to decide whether or not you will be able to give your games to your friend. As stated above, first party games will allow you to this.

AFTER-THOUGHT: ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The big change in the Xbox Live system is the feature to allow all users on one console to have gold by just one user having it. For example, if I have Xbox Live Gold and my brothers also use the same console, they will also be able to use all the perks of a Gold account. They will have access to all the games on the console even if it was installed through my account.
In short, one Gold account subscription per Xbox.

AFTER-THOUGHT OF AN AFTER-THOUGHT, A KINECT STORY
Disclaimer, the following is information that I believe. I have no source for some, just my opinion.
The main question I'm seeing is why the Kinect is being forced upon us. This is what I believe is the case in relation to this matter.
The past version of the Kinect was not the big leap in innovating that Microsoft wanted. It is a powerful machine, but many developers were not making games for it. The games that were being made specifically for the Kinect we really not that great. They didn't appeal to many gamers as they were soft and childish. This wasn't what Microsoft was looking for from developers.
Why weren't developers making games for the Kinect? Was it because they couldn't?

A CHANGE OF MARKETS
If a developer made a game for the Kinect, their market instantly became much smaller. Why? Not everyone has a Kinect. As of February 2013, the Kinect has sold an estimated 24 million units. This does not mean that these units have been sold to individual customers, but to retailers. Which means that there are Kinects in the shelves or warehouses that will never reach the individual customer. In comparison, the 360 has sold an estimated 77.2 million units, again not all sold to invidual customers, but it's safe to assume that there a lot more 360's in the hand of an individual customer than there is Kinects. In an instant, your market shrinks to about 31% of the possible market. Keep in mind, this number will change depending on how many units of each product have been sold to each consumer.
With that information given to you, what I believe is happening is simple. Microsoft is shipping a Kinect with every console because like this, if you own an Xbox One--you will aso own a Kinect. With this, I'm thinking Microsoft is ensuring the developers that the market is out there! In this move, Microsoft want the developers to explore the possibilities of the Kinect. They want newer innovations as they believe they've made a product with enormous potential. Why do you believe they were shoving the Kinect down everyone's throat last E3? They wanted to expand their market.
Just think of everything that can be developed for the Kinect. For example, Dead Rising 3 will have a feature where it will listen outside of the game through the Kinect. If you make a loud sound while playing, the zombies will hear you and they will come after you. This is the kind of thing Microsoft is looking for with the Kinect, innovation.
As to why it can't be disconnected, that I'm not sure. Maybe it's for the same thing? I can't expand further on this.

So you can only resell to approved retailers? Basically meaning, don't plan on selling those games cause you're gonna take it up the rear. I have literally NEVER traded in a game at gamestop. I usually keep games forever, so it's not a big deal to me, but if I'm gonna sell it, I'd rather sell to an individual. I get more out of the sale, and THEY get a better price than from Gamestop. Everyone wins.

About the whole sharing games thing, I wasn't aware of that. Sounds like it could be a big win.

About installing games being a feature that was asked for? No, not really. My hard drive couldn't even dream of holding all the games I own. Similarly, 500GB for the next-gen consoles is a paltry number given the size the games will undoubtedly be. Which is why I DON'T install games on my hard drive, even though it's an option. I don't want to constantly uninstall/reinstall based on what I feel like playing. Sure, having to still use a disc even if the game is installed is kind of annoying, but I don't know where the idea comes from that being forced to install games on the hard drive is something gamers were asking for. If that's what you want, buy digital. If not, buy physical media. Simple. What they've done is taken away that choice and the statement you posted is basically their way of spinning it to make it sound good.

Now, I've read that PS3 is making the ENTIRE PS4 library streamable to Vita. Plus we know they will be making the PS3 library streamable as well, so by default you SHOULD be able to stream that to Vita as well. A cool feature but that's an extra 300 dollar device to purchase.

I can already do OnLive on my phone. 360 controller on it and everything. If Microsoft would do the same as Sony here, only make the entire library streamable via smartglass app, THAT would be an AWESOME feature. No extra hardware to buy, just an awesome implementation of a smartphone app they have that is currently not reaching its potential.

Installs on 360 are usually 4-7 GB right now and then require the disc I think just for authentication. It sounds like the check in allows you to not need to put the disc in. Size shouldn't change much, right? Just wondering.

The convenience of not having to get up to switch games is nice. Not really needed, but still nice

It's really interesting how some functions that I find useless are very important to others and vice versa  I've never used the software you posted above...how/why do you use it? So you can play videogames while taking a shit in your bathroom or while you're sitting in a taxi? Do you leave your game console on while you're on vacation thousands of miles away, and then play on your device through 4G?

Well, the service I mentioned is independent of any console, it is its own cloud gaming service. Likewise, Sony is partnering with a cloud company (Geikei or something like that) to build their own similar service. In theory, it shouldn't require the console to be on, it would just validate the software license that should be linked to your PSN account or whatever and let cloud do the rest. I'm hoping that's how it will work, anyway. But yeah, the idea is if you can't bring your hardware with you wherever you are, or the urge hits to play a game and you're away from home, no sweat. Doesn't matter if your device meets the hardware requirements for the game, so long as it's sufficient to stream the video from cloud.

AHAHAHAHAHA!!!! MS is such a fail company under Balmer. Windows Phone, Windows 8, and now Xbox One are all total disasters.

So now it's just like a 360 with forced Kinect. Drop the Kinect and I might consider it. TBH though the whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth and I think I'm just going to go with PS4.

Well, I'll give MS props for realizing "Oh shit, we're idiots."

However, actually approaching a couple of focus groups of the main people who will be buying your product initially, early adopter gamers, would have insured a screw up like this never MADE it to a public announcement.

Yeah, they screwed the pooch big time...now it's straight up damage control.

I'll keep my 360, and go with a PS4 at launch. Maybe buy a XB1 used when they're cheap as shit.

to be honest the DRM issue wasn't a big deal IMO, the 24 hour check in was pretty gay but understandable. The only thing I found to be utter nonsense was the regional settings, I can't he how that could benefit ANYONE so I'm glad that's gone now.

thing is... how and when will the better hardware be utilized? The PS3 had better hardware than the 360 and yet the games looked and played pretty much the same with a few exceptions, when you add in that you need to buy the "Eye" for an additional $60 to get the movement tracking features of the kinect that means they are only $40 apart. To me the Xbone looks like, while lesser powered, will be a more versatile console than the PS4. To me the PS4 looks like an amazing gaming console, full stop... the Xbox IMO has more to offer besides gaming which matters to me since I'm not a hardcore gamer, hell I still think the 360 and PS3 have good enough graphics and power lol...

I do agree with you regarding Naughty Dog though... I LOVE the Uncharted series and even though I haven't played Last of Us it's on my list of games I have to buy... but two franchises isn't enough to make me go one way or the other... in the end, knowing me, I'll end up buying both eventually... but I think the first one I will get will be the Xbone

Do most people want the movement tracking features of the kinect?

I'm not a hard core gamer either (in fact, I'm always a LATE adopter of this crap) but the "features" offered by the kinect seem interesting, but gadgety. Ok, so I can wave my hand at the tv and it does stuff...great, but...so? This doesn't really interest me much especially since its always on.

The X1 has the advantage of cloud processing, granted you need a net connection for that though but it does future proof hardware limitations to some extent.

I think kinect right now is kinda gadgety but that's because no one has really developed anything for it yet. The original kinect was an optional piece of equipment that really wasn't that great to begin with, so developers just kinda ignored it. Why spend time trying to add content in your game for a device that's not all that and not all 360 owners even have one, you're just limiting the amount of people that will buy your game. Now that the Kinect2 is standard with the Xbone and has been greatly improved with not only far better body tracking but voice commands I think it presents developers more options for exploring game control if done right it and now it will not be limiting the audience their game can be marketed to since everyone will have a Kinect2. I think it's just going to be one of those things that the general public can't quiet see how it's going to be implemented right now but has the potential to be awesome in the future.

Yep, hopefully they'll make the most of it (I'm hoping they do) but to fair, Sony is doing the same.

http://www.gaikai.com/

Also, I agree with the sentiment that Kinect has ALWAYS seemed a little gimmicky. I'm hoping that Microsoft's decision to include it with all next gen consoles will make it more mainstream and we'll see it being used more effectively. Only time will tell, though, since Nintendo never made it out of the "gimmick" phase with the Wii. :idk:

I dunno.. I still know lots of kids that love the Wii... and that's something I think MS saw, while adult gamers may not have the desire to use the Kinect2 and its implementations may still be limited in games geared towards adults and teens, i'm sure there will be a TON of games for kids using it which now expands the market for MS greatly.. but again.. time will tell, in 5 years we may all be wondering how did we ever play games with out a Kinect2, you never know..lol

Re: Per FastRedPonyCar, Xbox 720 will require ALWAYS ONLINE

Hopefully the new motion-tracking hardware in both systems is powerful enough to really break the mold of mouse/keyboard and gamepad type gaming. If not this decade, then maybe the next? Someone mentioned that the PS3 has *some* superior specs compared to 360, but did not perform as well in some games...I thought this was because the PS3 was an unusual beast to develop software for...this go around they're both more similar, which is good...?...and the PS4 will have superior ram.

There were several games that made it quite apparent the PS3 was a more powerful machine...but many that didn't. I think if I were the developer and already had to invest extra to develop the game for two such differing consoles (and possibly PC also), I probably also wouldn't want to spend even more simply giving the game more eye candy on the more capable console.

I agree. I was just thinking about why there should be more than one system for programmers to develop for. I understand competition and what-not, but I couldn't figure out a way to word my question.

Oh, lol. Since they're essentially the same, there shouldn't be that same hurdle in next-gen consoles. Which realistically probably means that while the PS3 may have more robust memory, it probably won't be put to good use, at least not in any games, save possibly any exclusives.

Marc G wrote:thing is... how and when will the better hardware be utilized?

They looked pretty much the same because of the complexity of the cell making it so hard to develop for. Even now, only a few studios truly mastered it. Also, I would say games such as Uncharted and Last of Us look FAR better than anything on the 360.

That problem is now moot though as both consoles use the same architecture. They will both be just as easy to develop for (actually the Xbone might even be a little harder with it's 3 OS's), only the PS4 is more powerful.

What console appeals to you more is a matter of preference, but games will look and run better on PS4. That's a fact.
