One thing that I find particularly daft is that we refuse to provide education or supplies to the poor for birth control
That's not true. Every public school (at least here in CA) has classes and pamphlets about sex ed.
And condoms are free, either at the local clinics or through govt programs
http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/std/order_condoms.htmThis is L.A. county but I am sure there are programs like this across the country.
People end up with 5 kids in welfare because of poor choices not lack of information or resources.
Well, that is a positive example. It doesn't apply nationwide, though. And while people in Kansas and Kentucky are free to do as they please in their state, I am also free to use them as examples opposite of the good example you gave above.
There is a significant push by lawmakers to slash funding for sex ed that isn't abstinence-only, and for eliminating or otherwise blocking any subsidy / assistance for birth control to the poorer groups. It doesn't make logical sense, but it's an anti-sex ideology, so I don't really expect it to make sense.
But it is nice to see from your example that it's not the case everywhere. Fundamentally I agree with a lot of people here that the responsibility lies ultimately with the individuals.
Because the problem is, spending millions of dollars to basically tell kids, "Hey, if your dick goes there, without one of these on, this happens."
It's a very, very simple theory. And I'll bet 99.9% of breathing people over the age of 12 know this, they just don't care.
Look at the teenagers, you really think they don't know how babies are made? No amount of money can fix the stupid.

Yeah I tend to agree. Most teens know about sex enough to know the risks. Most of them also know they can get free condoms at the clinic. They just don't care about it.
Also not knowing about contraceptives would be a good excuse to have ONE kid. Not five. Because I am sorry but once you had a kid, you know how it was made.
Also, not all welfare queens are/were teen moms. Some of them keep popping kids well into their thirties.
It's really not an education/resource problem IMHO. Problem is people don't give a shit.

Oh, it's an education problem, just not necessarily a "Sex Education" problem.
Several countries who have a much more comprehensive approach to combating teen pregnancy have much better outcomes.
The problem with America regarding this subject is that we, as a society begin from the ideological standpoint that we can somehow try and keep kids from having sex in the first place. We make the same mistakes with drugs and all the other "Morality" based stuff.
A better approach is to assume that kids are going to experiment and to teach them much more effective ways to protect themselves as well as making the tools to do so available. Remember Billy, you live in CA, on the west coast which is very different than much of the country. Kids in the bible belt don't get anything like the sort of education or access to birth control which has been the norm on the west coast for decades.

As a single parent of a kid who just got out of diapers I can relate. That shits expensive.
Literally right? Maybe harness that shit & turn it into fuel or diamonds...

Seriously though, I see big changes for the worse as time goes on. 1 step forward, 2 sideways. Law stacked upon more law, loopholes, & eventually the
unscrupulous greedy bastards run it all.
Because you cant control your dick, the greedy bastards are to blame?
lol
lol wut , confused much?
I was trying to read when Mitt Romney came in and slapped my hands out of the way and started typing.
Greedy bastard.

Jonathan Haidt wrote a brilliant book last year and he says more or less this. The left and the right both do good. The problem is the ideological purity in both parties which makes gridlock such a problem.
He did point out that the whole corporate personhood is a huge problem.

Fewer political parties =easier manipulation of the system. Its basically good cop vs bad cop and the parties juggle the issues and take turns being the "good" cop. When there is gridlock then almost nothing will get thru the system thats the will of the mass majority. The laws and bills that do get passed are written by lobbyists for the minority that is corporate power. As the joker said so eloquently "this town needs an enema"!

Since the very good point about corporate bribery tainting politics has been made, I'd like to point out there is a really sensible group trying to fix exactly that.
http://anticorruptionact.org/What they really need now is signature support from citizens so they can get the act introduced in Congress.
