I went to the grocery this morning because I'm thinking they're going to shut down daycare and the schools as a precautionary measure. I may be home with the kids quite a bit. Wanted to stock up on some food in case the supermarket goes empty for a month.

It was crowded, but very civil.

Rice is gone.
There's evidence of vodka hoarding.
lysol is gone. (not sure what good this does if you're stuck at home)
ultra soft TP is gone, but ultra strong is still out in force.
low sodium spam is gone.

I know everybody makes fun of preppers, but when the store is empty, you'd better have some food at home.

The virus doesn't scare me. The response from the government and other citizens DOES scare me.

Man I’ve been in SLC, Cheyenne and now Denver the last few days; traffic is fuckin WEIRDLY light, like no one is anywhere. Reminds me of the Arby’s commercials...

I noticed the traffic was incredibly light this morning. It was almost eerie, and it's not like it was super early either.

You should see it around here. Microsoft is telling everyone to work from home. A big school district and 2 major colleges (enrollment about 50,000 combined) moving all classes online.

Supposedly Coachella is going to get moved to the fall, which is good because I will be way more fit after the summer. Two of the local universities are cancelling in-class lectures for the Spring term - online classes only.

Wife and I decided we are going to Hawaii bfore the end of the month. 2 round-trip tickets plus island hoppers for under $800. No brainer. :idk:

honestly it would be horrible but they should consider a lock down for 2-3 weeks. would be better than a much longer prolonged period if it gets worse.

things might not be that bad now but it doubles every week. if people need hospital care and they don't have enough beds or equipment things get dicey fast.

Honestly, this should happen regardless. I understand some jobs need to be outside/on site, like construction workers, police, store clerks etc. But there is no reason why most office jobs couldn't be done remotely. People are always talking about better MPG on vehicles, carbon footprint reduction etc... this is a solution that has been available for a long time now. Shit, I've been working remotely for 13 years and it is not an issue at all.

Unfortunately its just a mental shift that has to happen for far too many.
I can't tell you how many managers I've worked for/with/around that think people working from home = no work getting done.
Sad truth is these are often the same folks who don't realize how many under them are doing 20 hours of work during 40 hours of office time.

I've been hitting normal traffic on 495 (Long Island Expressway) to NYC.
Only one area college is closed with online classes... so far.
My g/f teaches at a local Community College - she's waiting for the higher-ups to make a decision.
We're not worried about ourselves, but her mother is going to be 90 in April.

I'm someone who needs to get out of my house an into a different environment in order to work. Would probably be different if I had a dedicated home office though.

yeah it's a mindset issue for sure. I could see this being an issue years ago but these days you can monitor work remotely just as closely as you can do it in an office.

And some of these dumb managers are the same ones that have no issues outsourcing call centers to India etc... ridiculous...

Sure you can get workers from fucking Bangalore, but god forbid someone sits at home 15 miles away while working...

My company moved 90% of their workers to home positions. We have some analysts that have to work on-site for clients but other than that, we're all home based now .

We used to have a 2 floor office in an expensive part of L.A. (Woodland Hills) and it's been closed down now. Saved the company literally millions, improved everyone's work/life balance, cut down on our carbon footprint and gave workers a choice to move out of an expensive area, putting more money in our pockets without having to raise wages while saving hugely on operational costs. Our productivity actually increased after this (it's part of my job to monitor it, since I am a business analyst). Zero downsides.

Microsoft is doing it right. They paying for the full 40 hours per week for hourly workers. I suspect that Amazon will follow soon.

If you're old, like me, you remember that was where Rob and Laura Petrie (Dick Van Dyke show) lived. Idyllic homestead, my ass.

nah I used to be that way too, but you adapt fast. You'd have a strange first few months (maybe) where you need to learn to focus but you can get used to it quite quickly. Like Kyle said, it's a mindset.
