The open comb is MADE for thick beards.
The fatips are beautiful. I have a gold grande, and a gold retro. They’re a tad rustic, finish wise, but they are
a u t h e n t I c. No cast zinc on these.

I would take either of my fatips over any of my merkurs/jaggers/Otto kampfe/goodfella/etc.
For modern de, the only stuff I like as much as the fatips would be my milled razorocks or my iKon sbs.

huh! no kidding... hm. well may haveta try one! hell, it costs LESS than merkurs too.
what'd you think of those gilette fat boy adjustables? are the fatips heavier than that?
i dunno why-- i prefer a lunky heavy SOB cause it makes me guide it less. when i had a merkur travel razor, i used to shred my face cause i'd push on it. the heftier 34 make life better with more mass-- but i spect i could find a real beastly heavy one and just be done with it forever.

the 34's heavyish.. but the idea of solid brass kinda appeals 'cause... heavy!
so funny-- i talk about tool weighting, metallurgy and the like with lots of my woodworking compadres about chisels and hammers, planes, etc... but it's important with edge tools, and i suspect razors are basically the same dynamic!

Dan, the fatip grande has a nice heavy feel like a fatboy or aristocrat. The retro otoh is so long and thin, it feels like a yard rake, but still super effective if you like long handles.

Btw, I’m going to try to return my gold occam’s Oren. I think they bent the safety bar when they “enhanced “ it. I can’t load a blade without it getting caught up on the back of the safety bar. I can’t shave with a knocked up artist club blade. The Oren is a travesty the way they ruined a fairly elegant razor.

Gene, thanks for the heads up on the cremo. I don’t think I’ll use my brush again. Shaved are much better, and blades last longer

SOTD:
New Razorock Game Changer .84 - Gillette 7 O'Clock yellow. Damn. This razor is EFFICIENT. Nice heavy feel.
Declaration Grooming Icarus Contemplation - This soap works great, but it's definitely my least favorite DG, scentwise.
RR 24 barrel synthetic brush. Best $11 ever spent (assuming it's for a shallow tub, and not a deep mug)
Rossini Splash. wonderful licorice smell, but it's confirmed. This burns me.

Damn shame.

Yep,
It's a wonderful brushless cream. I have gone in brushless spurts where I only use Cremo for weeks at a time.

Newholland,
I can’t believe I forgot to mention the razorock mj90.
$40. Milled aluminum head. Milled Titanium handle. Made in Canada. It was my daily shaver for quite a while before I went nuts buying stuff again

whoa-- that's pretty badass! looks like a serious tool-- i've never tried a milled razor before-- i've only had merkurs and the fat boy. gotta admit i'm kinda intrigued by something made to better specs-- not to say any of 'em ever let me down with even their 50s style fab... but i can definitely see how a well made tool may up the ante...
thanks for the recommendation! they have a coupla decent ones-- does the black anodized get grungy?

Sold my crib on Friday. That means my shave-den-cabinet only has 8 weeks before it becomes a distant memory.
I'm going to have more room for my guitars, amps and DAW but, less room in the outhouse.
Going to need something to store my implements of beard destruction... something that fits on a shelf in a closet and has easy access.
Any suggestions will be appreciated! Right now, I can only think of a low profile parts box/storage bin.
Prolly wind up with a test tube rack....

The anodizing doesn't react any worse than chrome, gold, or nickel to soap scum/hair.
The ONLY negative of anodized aluminum = you can nick it if you hit it with a harder metal. So, don't hit stuff with it, and you'll be fine.

I'm way late to this thread, but am very much intrigued. Liking the price point on that Mercur clone. Might have to try one out. I'm sure it's all over the prior 7 pages, but is there a tl;dr recommendation you guys can make on some good blades to start with?
