My deal is that I never wanted to make drafting a career, I just wanted to use it as a platform to become an Architect without having a 4-yr degree. (8 years working under a Registered Architect allowed me to take the professional exams). That didn't go so well although I did receive my license. When I was laid-off in 2009, firms were only hiring candidates with 4-yr degrees and I couldn't find work.

I switched gears to the Construction industry. I'm in school for Construction Management now.
So, if your goal is to strictly do CAD work it would be a good idea to have experience with everything. You'll always be able to find work, or you could form a company that does CAD consulting. These days a lot of firms are only hiring PT cad positions and outsourcing for larger demands. CAD experience is definitely giving me an advantage in the Construction industry. Good luck bro!

I'm a fireman too. Specifically and engine / squad company Lieutenant. We do regular fire and EMS type runs and we're part of our region's technical rescue team - so we hang off of buildings and stuff. Can't beat working 9 days a month.

This is where i am. Assistant manager at a busy-as-hell video store. I'm really good at it, the pay is alright, but it's stressful as hell. Taking two weeks off starting tomorrow. Pretty sure that place will crumble to the ground without me there.

Line Service Technician for an FBO (Airport Business). And college student until May.

Thinking about looking for something new though because management is an absolute fucking joke and I hate pretty much everyone I work with. Plus the scheduling isn't very flexible, which means I have to work 6 AM - 10 PM every Saturday (after about 5 hours of sleep) to stay full-time...and I'm taking 22 hours of classes! I can handle working full-time with the huge courseload if I work 5 days a week, but doing those doubles (after closing the night before) is absolutely killing me. But even aside from that, the bullshit level from management and coworkers isn't worth the pay. This place is going downhill fast and I'm ready to bail.

I'm a farmer. I manage a large outfit and run my own fully Integrated farm. It's a dream gig, It's an incredible amount of responsibility for someone of my experience and age. Absolutely unheard of out here in the big leagues of agriculture.

It's either 110% full speed ahead or pretty relaxing. I love the high stress of getting a plant picked, packed and cooled within an hour. Then put it on a truck to arrive the next morning 3 states away for someone to eat at dinner that night. It's awe inducing.

I take a lot of pride in what I do.

You need to get on at Signature or Atlantic. The tips alone would make it worth it.

Line boy is a tough gig man, I always try to help those guys out. A Gatorade while on a hot ramp sure does wonders.

I've applied to both many times, haha. I got a call from Atlantic before I got this gig and ended up playing phone tag for a week with someone who I was never able to get in touch with again. I actually work in San Marcos, even though I live about 10 minutes from KAUS. But two of our employees are ex-Signature guys who came to work here when we opened up, and another one of our employees works both here and at Signature simultaneously. He's one of the people I really like. Do you stop by Signature often? I can PM you his name.

I really like the job itself (I'm an aviation nut), it's just the shitty management and rotten attitudes that are ruining it (as well as the hours). Every day is doing a bunch of shit for one manager and getting bitched at by another one because they wanted you to do something else or do it differently. Line guys are at the bottom of the totem pole so we can't really say no to one of them. Pretty much everything we do is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. We just fired two employees recently and hired three new ones. All of the rest of us are just about ready to GTFO. It was a really fun job for a while but the bullshit is multiplying exponentially.

I always thought it'd be a cool summer job Gyknow? Just hang out, make sure the 100ll goes there and Jet-A here type of deal. Watch some planes, get offered some rides, etc.

At least that's how I imagine it lol.

I usually try to avoid signature and Atlantic because I'm flying piston and I hate the fees (if I rolled in in a Citation is understand, but Christ).

Never flew in/on/around the Austin area. I think I'm going to buy a plane this year (late 2013 depending on what my taxes are).

Yep, throw in quite a bit of towing (and hangar stacking) and that's the gist of it. Our company also is nuts about making sure we marshal in every aircraft coming to our section of the ramp, so badly timed arrivals also result in some good exercise from sprinting across the ramp, lol. We're a flight school too and all of our birds are 2011 models, so we also have to clean them all the time. That's where the conflicts come into play...the manager for the FBO side and the manager for the flight school side want completely different things from the line guys at all times. If you do what one wants, the other will be furious. This manifests the endless amounts of bullshit.

Cleaning is a good example...if it's a busy day and you're doing actual line guy shit all day and don't get a chance to clean the planes before closing, the flight school manager will stir up a shitstorm and tell the CEO that all the line guys are worthless lazy fuckers. If you scrub every bird to a shine every shift like the flight school manager wants you to, you'll inevitably miss a couple of arrivals and the FBO manager will tell the CEO that we're lazy bastards. Oh no! The pilot had to taxi in and park on his own, just like at every other FBO in the universe! How horrible. There's a lot more bullshit than that, but that's a basic example of the stupidity around here.

We also do all the bitchwork...like yardwork, chauffeuring students and customers around (the other day I had to drive to Austin to pick up a customer who was flying in commercially, then bring him back to San Marcos because we had a rental car for him for some reason...WTF?!), cleaning hangars, and setting up for events. It's not so bad, but again, there are often situations where one manager prioritizes the bitchwork above actual line service duties that need to be done, and then you get shat on for doing your actual job.

There are definitely cool moments though, like seeing interesting aircraft and meeting cool people. Patrick Swayze's widow flew in a couple of weeks ago in her King Air and I got to chit chat with her a bit. I get to watch T-6 II's from Randolph AFB do touch and go's often, and we have Army Blackhawks stop by for fuel sometimes. We're also right next to the Commemorative Air Force, so we get to watch warbirds (and fuel them) all the time. There are lots of cool privately owned military aircraft here too, like T-34's, Yak's, and even T-33's. There was even a guy doing pattern work in a P-51 the other day! He's the owner of some aviation company and is filthy rich. I forgot which company though.

By fees, do you mean ramp fees? There's no ramp fees at KHYI, just hangar fees. We'll put you on tie-down for free if you want.
