Well, thanks-- but the praise is misguided. I went on a 3 month personal leave yesterday until things settle down. I am a single Father with no backup to watch my kid if I become sick. I can't risk his security. Family first.

I have 3 kids so me and wifey have to be disciplined.. we're doing well, its just that i have to balance all my 3 kids educations (moved online) and I also have to finish my full course load (1st/2nd year Physics) exams start in 7 days. Crunch time.

Sorry - that was a very self centered reply. I am just getting sick and tired of this locked down feeling. To me, there is coming a time where it is not worth it.

But watching out for a family with children is a very different thing.

Yeah ... I seen this earlier. Still, it's the LA times and the media. You really don't know what to believe  Since my wife and I are in our 60s we venture out some. We carry 70 percent alcohol with us and use it a lot.

If I had little ones at home it would be a WHOLE different scenario. Take care of your family and yourself

Smithfield meatpacking plant shuttering ‘indefinitely’

The world's biggest pork processor, Smithfield Foods, said on Sunday (April 12) it will shut a U.S. plant indefinitely after dozens of employees tested positive for the coronavirus.

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem said on Saturday (April 11) over 200 Smithfield employees have now tested positive for the virus, accounting for over half of the state's cases.

I believe the number as of this morning was 237 employees at the Smithfield plant were tested positive. That number keeps increasing every time I hear it.

There's some super scare mongering going on in the rural areas around here. Apparently, according to certain sources, in Sioux Falls you can't step outside your home without getting arrested. This according to some yokel I'm conversing with on another board. Problem is, none of that's true at all. We walk the dogs every day. The only real difference is that neighbors don't run out to pet the dogs and shake hands now. They'll just wave from a distance. :idk: No jack booted thugs hauling us off to jail for it.

The most frustrating part of this whole thing for me is how the science deniers are screaming the loudest right now. So much misinformation making the rounds, and so many people willing to believe it.

FB is great for exposing people that are stupid. The pandemic has made it even more obvious. A lady who is one of the worst posted a rant about America becoming communist because she talked to a random employee at a store who told her we need letters of authorization to travel around town. I posted a link to a press release from the county sheriff explaining that is a false rumor. She told me that was wrong. Why? Because the random employee said we do need it.

And the number keeps climbing. Gat damn.

So far my place has two confirmed cases, and one of them had been working from home for five days before they were tested positive. They've made some massive changes to the work areas in the plant and are being really strict about keeping people apart, which seems to be working alright so far.

NY state received over 10,000 masks from FEMA with "dry rot" in them (they were from 2010, no good to use!) and also some ventilators that were not working properly from the goverment stockpiles as well, it just shows that the preparedness was not there (for over a decade) on a local or federal level for something this massive in such a short time

With all this said, i am more optimistic than pessimistic (I have healthy respect for this shit) but i do think with all of us putting our heads together we will be ok in the long run

Thats the thing though it did NOT need to be a shock to the system.
There have been folks who said we were not prepared for some like this and made suggestions on how we could be better prepared.
Of course hindsight is 20/20 and all that. I for one didn't take that stuff seriously because like many I had become numb to media hysteria regarding the topic and had fully embraced normalcy bias.

To me our entire leadership class has failed us. Blame whichever specific one you want but they've failed us. We pay these people to handle these things for us collectively and they all get an F on this performance review.
No one saw EXACTLY this coming but I'm barely versed in the topic and I know Mike Osterholm and Bill Gates both made noise on something very much like this happening and saying we were under prepared.
Just because it was going to be bad no matter what doesn't mean we couldn't have been infinitely more prepared.

Agree with a large chunk of what you said, but all "experts" have made mistakes with this damn virus for a while

The W.H.O told was wrong about human contact in early january
Trump and the Fed goverment have made missteps along the way
Dr Fauci in Jan said the virus not a big deal to the U.S.
NYC mayor and NYC Health commissioner have been wrong many times
We were told the virus is not airborne early on then said YES it can travel airborne, i read it can now travel up to 12 feet instead of 6
The stockpile of supplies in the goverment were over 10 years old and not working properly when needed
......on and on and on

Its a new strain of a virus with so many variables that information is being digested daily on this damn thing that the goal posts will be moved almost daily both in the private and public and private sector

PS - The biggest fault is with china and the commie goverment

I'm sick and tired of the hysteria surrounding this.
Yes, it's super damn serious.
I am in self imposed quarantine for close to a month. I think I've only been out 3-4 times in the last month. (No virus, I've just got about 3 "high risk factors", so I'm letting the wife do the food shopping, and I disinfect stuff as it comes into the house. She and my daughter only go out with masks and gloves. I've taught them about isolation procedures.
Yeah, I'm nervous, but I'm not freaking out.

I don't know if this source is reliable, but I found it very interesting, and other than anti communist China complaints, was non political vis a vis USA politics.
