sending prayers for Yarb, his family, and really - all of us.
The reporting on the nursing home in WA is crazy - at least (13) deaths, (54) of (120) residents have been taken to the hospital - 70 of 180 staff showing COVID-19 symptoms.
Seattle TimesIf the general population numbers ever get even 1/2 this bad - it will be something none of us have ever seen in our lifetimes.

Thanks. We are all good. My wife tested negstive. We freak out a little not for ourselves but for those who we might spread it to. My kids are medically fragile. My inlaws are old and not particularly healthy. I teach 75 students each day.

I work in a hospital lab for a really large health system in New York and we are going live with testing for it today at our main lab. I'm not involved in that specific process, but there is a possibility that I can or will be handling swabs from a person who may have Covid. Other respiratory tests(Flu, RSV etc) may be done first to rule out Covid. For what its worth, we handle the specimens from possible Covid patients in exactly the same way as we do for flu, no one in a lab is hopping into an isolation suit like they would for Ebola. The big issue that is causing all of this speculation is the lack of testing available but there are a ton of people working diligently all around the country to rectify that issue. It's pretty astounding how quickly these tests have come online. This sort of this would normally take years, not months. It would be nice if it was faster, but rushing out flawed testing is just as bad, if not worse. Just to touch on mortality rates, we were told its an estimated 0.4%. Flu is ~0.2%. I guess take that with a grain of salt, because of the lack of local data, but 2-3% seems a bit high. Make sure you wash your hands often and don't touch your face/eyes/mouth.

Quality post.
It’s hilarious when i see people (in this thread too) trying to politicize this. Saying “what’s Trump doing?” And other total nonsense. When in reality the medical community, with funds available from the government, has put this testing on the fast track. It’s actually quite amazing how quickly people are working. The SUPER irony is I see many hoping to basically close the borders. Or restrict flights coming in. Hahah. Y’know I recall someone who wanted to secure the borders and maybe if we were actively doing such a thing with greater measures, that would be sumthin we could actually DO if this really was an issue . But thankfully this isn’t anything to actually be panicking about and two, it’s just funny .
And even beyond all that garbage that just annoys me, if you also don’t believe the media is sensationalized this for, again, political means or whatver other narrative they want to push you are one of the victims of the media in general. There is fucking “live updates” for this.. fucking L O fucking L. Spreading the fear OF fear is an old tactic and it’s amazing how much it’s taken hold. It took me a sec to realize why the grocery was nearly out of beef yesterday, then I realized people are fucking stockpiling! Haha. Also noticed the potato chip aisle with a bunch of holes in the shelves. I was just passing thru, I don’t eat that shit, but Americans still reach for the comfort foods when bracing for the pandemic! Lol. Never mind they’ll prolly die eating only potato chips and some beef for a few months holed up in their bunker!

testing the virus itself is different than testing people to see if they have it. other countries have had the later type of testing for a lot longer than we have had. our response was denial until it only recently started to tank the stock market. hard to really know what is going on without the data.
also it is strange to have someone in charge say things that are obviously false and then have his advisers come out and say something vastly different. doesn't exactly inspire confidence/trust.

The way every issue is an overblown political drama has gotten very tiring. Your point on fear hit the nail square on the head. As far as travel restrictions and voluntary quarantines go, I think its probably a good idea temporarily, but at a certain point the risk to the general population will be fairly minimal. Obviously this isn't something you want running rampant in a place with a large concentration of people who have underlying immune or medical issues, like a hospital or nursing home, because hospital acquired diseases are 100% a real concern. But again, that isn't something that is a giant issue for 99% of healthy adults. So yea, I'm just some lab scum but everything seems fairly normal on my end.

I'm actually referring to testing for the presence of the virus in a person. You're absolutely correct that other countries have had test kits weeks longer than we have had here. I don't know who dropped the ball, but I read on propublica that the CDC had some issues developing the test for whatever reason and now state health departments seem to be picking up the slack. There are definitely some things to learn from this whole fiasco. But I guess my overall point is to be cautious, but there really isn't a need to panic because Covid probably isn't the next plague.

Xenophobia of Mexicans is one of America's greatest national pastimes. Ignorant hicks is one of our greatest national resources. Just to be clear, I am not implying that this applies to you. How's the stock market looking today? Glad I am not walking home in Manhattan today, wouldn't want someone to land on me. You can't take credit for the stock market going up and blame others when it goes down.

Do you want EVERYONE and ANYONE from the southern border to just walk on in? We use to have a border policy at time time and liberals use to like a strong border (Bill Clinton, Diane Feinstien, Joe Biden, Obama, MANY OTHERS just a few years ago ) but they have lost their minds in recent years and are now against it - including Joe Biden who just said they are more American than USA citizens

Sorry if Facts > peeps feelings
Sticking to the topic at hand, none of us have a clue what ANYONE crossing the border has (as far as intent/ or any illness or any disease etc) and lets not pretend we do, we have every right to now, intellectual my goodness this is not high intellectual topic, this is basic junior high school common sense but thats sadly lacking these days
BTW is kooks like WHO and China are all over the map with answers as far as the virus itself, we cant trust china or verify with them so far

I don't know how this topic turned in the direction.
While the topic of border security is worth discussing (on some other forum), to lump in the Trumpian rhetoric about border security and apply it to the public health issue of this virus does actually just make you come off like run of the mill xenophobe.
There's no true logical analysis about it that would lead one to believe that illegal border crossings are increasing the risk of corona virus in the US on any meaningful level. The likelihood that an immigrant crossing the desert has recently been on an international flight, or a cruise, or having had recent contact with someone who has... is very small.
There are a lot of good reasons to want a secure border. But the disguising of xenophobia as germaphobia is pretty transparent.
You failed. Dog whistle better next time.
