I think the bigger issue here is that he murdered someone and got away with it because of an ass-backwards law that condones such acts.
Whatever actually happened, that Zimmerman killed him in cold blood was never in doubt. If Florida didn't have such obscene laws regarding the use of deadly force than this would have ended completely differently.
Furthermore, Zimmerman doesn't have a gun, they both end up with bloody lips and go home and none of this ever comes to the media's attention.
My only hope is that this soap opera is a catalyst for change that will force people to reexamine the place of legislation in terms of regulating violence.

Im always suprised that people make assumptions based off of what they would do and cast that assumption over the whole world, its like some sort of super ego trip.
The fact that Zimmerman had his head smashed into the pavement should rule out at the very least "killing him in cold blood" and at least show that he was in fear of his life.
If the prople in Florida decide that the law needs to be changed they can do so through their legislators. If the majority of citizens want the law changed it can be. That's how it works in the USA.
Even though the outcome was the worst thing possible, Mr Z. broke no laws if he had he would have gone to jail. In Florida, Texas and some other states, if you attack another citizen he (or she) just might be carrying a firearm. People have nothing to fear if they don't attack law abiding citizens.

The defense did not invoke stand-your-ground, but self defense. With Zimmerman on his back getting his ass beat, stand-your-ground law is not needed because there is no option to retreat.
