a good rule of thumb is that pretty much any German car out of warranty is a no-no unless you like headaches and spending money. electrical issues are a big one ... you might get lucky and have no issues with the drivetrain, but when it starts raining and your window won't go up ...

i know a girl who had one of the newer Beetles ... the last straw for her was getting to a gas station low on gas and the gas door wouldn't open :lol:

Mercedes are reliable, as long as they're maintained properly.

VAG overall is more interested in being the biggest car company in the world and have cut every possible corner. That's why there are common parts between VW, Audi, Bugatti, and Lambo. The VW brand itself has further cost cutting by sourcing their builds out all over the globe.

The old German ones were bulletproof. Not so much now.
