I always thought the term Rock&Roll was invented in Cleveland.

Before that, it was all Pop.

And I agree, all these different sub genres are dumb.

Yeah I think your're right about Cleveland.
I believe Dickey was referring to the music itself.

Yeah, that was my assumption.

But I think of it more as a mish mash of Country, Delta blues and R&B/Soul.

Can't leave out Gospel too.

Exactly. I think of it the same way.
Ya know what's crazy? In ten years Rock went from Buddy Holly to Black Sabbath.

I know.

And only a couple of years later we had Yes and Rush. Then Punk and everything else.

I always forget how short the history is.

I don't know where the notion that people who play post rock think they're musical geniuses came from. That seems more like math rock, tech metal, ultra prog, etc. to me. :idk:

And it seems that ridiculous subgenre names are usually coined by shitty pretentious music reviewers, not bands themselves.

:hi5:

"The term "post-rock" is believed to have been coined by critic Simon Reynolds in his review of Bark Psychosis' album Hex, published in the March 1994 issue of Mojo magazine.[6] Reynolds expanded upon the idea later in the May 1994 issue of The Wire.[2][7]

He used the term to describe music "using rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes, using guitars as facilitators of timbre and textures rather than riffs and power chords". He further expounded on the term: 'Perhaps the really provocative area for future development lies... in cyborg rock; not the wholehearted embrace of Techno's methodology, but some kind of interface between real time, hands-on playing and the use of digital effects and enhancement'."

LAY OF MY CYBORG ROCK MAN!

Also, i just listened to some of the album he was reviewing when he coined the term and obviously it sounds nothing like what is considered "post rock" now, but the elements of his definition are there.

Sidenote: kind of digging this album!

pretty sure post-rock means, "rock music after civilization is gone." It will just be instrumental music, since humans iwll be dead. no singing.

the last time a band invented their own genre was when TWDY called themselves doom-gaze. fans thought that was pretentious and coined "douche-gaze"

I invented, and destroyed, Black Cybermetal in the course of about three months. I consider it the pinnacle of my art. I can never allow myself to play it again.

The feelz were too reelz.

not inside semiconductor fabs where phones are not permitted :(

 ok you get a pass, but you're going to mark this thread and listen to the drumjam i posted above and this other one i did from "the one hour challenge" thread when you get home. That's an order Sgt. Youngblood.

The submission has finally.come across the desk of the.gabmiralty. little shaky in the beginning but from 0.48 on... and yeah the potential there from that being a one hour challenge is immense. And I think we would compliment each other's styles well

Thanks Mike! Yeah the beginning lead part is garbage and just filler but could be worked into something much cooler.

If you didn't get a chance to check out the drum jam, here is that one: (also written and recorded in under an hour, just a scratch track of an idea really)

and here is the one i just posted today of the intro of a new song i just started. Just wrote it as i was recording it in 20 minutes last night. More of a 70's Pink Floyd type vibe.:
