New unexpected family member over the weekend.

Post by nightflameauto »

So, our little fucker, er, um, cat, Alvin, needed to go in for his yearly attention from the vets Friday. While there, I see this dude staring at me from the community wall.
TuxAd.jpg

So, I casually mention him to the wife when I get home. For years now she's said no more cats EVAR, mostly because Alvin is so . . . Alvin. So, I mention Tux here and she clamps down hard. With an adamant NO!

Then, the next morning she says, "I thought about it. If you really want to, we can go meet him."

Bingo-bango-bongo and about forty minutes later:

He's a great big dude. Haven't weighed him yet but he's gotta be close to twenty pounds if not more. Friendly as can be. Loves to do somersaults into your legs when you're trying to pet him. Within about twenty minutes the wife was saying what a treat he was, how cute he is, how much she likes him. So much for no more cats ever.

He's already knocked a whole bunch of shit off my shelves in my back room, stomped all over my computer keyboard while I was trying to work on things, and managed to find shit from behind the shelving units I thought were lost forever, and made me dig down a big stack of boxes I had stashed in the back room to help him find his way back out. So he's definitely a cat.

The pups are fascinated with him, and the other cats are being shockingly friendly for how early on we are. There's still some creep factor when they meet up, but no fights or spats yet. All in all, I'd say he's an alright addition to the house.

HNCD..... I'm definitely not getting another cat any time soon.... the wife wants another kitten so bad but the two we have are so damn antisocial.. and can barely tolerate each other and did not like it when we fostered two kittens last year....

Yeah, that's rough. Our cats have always been friendly with other animals. Typically they can be found napping together in a big pile of feline limbs, sometimes right up against one of the pups. They even liked to hang out with their Guinea Pig cousin when we were babysitting him for a bit.

Our biggest fear was Alvin going full Alvin. He's been a bit of a butt to newbs in the past, though this time he seems to be on best behavior. Maybe because Tux could sit on him and squash him to paste? The size difference is astronomical between them.

Congrats!! I'm so glad you've given him a great home. Tuxedo cats are the best. Mine is 19 years old now.

Alvin's about 13. Wife named him that because she wanted to call him Big Al when he grew up. He never really grew up, so to annoy her I call him Little Vinnie. Except when he's being a beeotch, then he's just the little fucker. <--intentional lowercase

We love him, but there's days.

And we technically have two tuxedo cats, and a tuxedo dog. Our current older dog is marked exactly like our older tuxedo cat. Including white paws and underbelly.

Congrats! Looks like a cool cat and that pic really captures the pup's fascination with the new addition.

Yeah, we really like that picture.

Dude's doing good so far. He's getting more and more comfortable around the dogs. Not quite up to rubbing on them yet like the other cats do, but he no longer tries to find a high place when they come near him. He's also out prowling the house more at night. Those first few nights he just holed up in the back room. He comes to visit us in the living room here or there but sees the dogs start rough-housing and freaks and goes back to his hidey-hole in the back room.

His fur is getting softer already from the diet change and purified water we provide. He seems pretty happy as he chatters away at us in the mornings. All in all I think he's gonna do just fine.

so.... just got a message from the Mrs... seems like we're going to be fostering another kitten.... she got a call from a friend who's sister found the kitten... 3 weeks old... a cat had her litter in their yard and when she moved her litter she left this girl behind..... according to my wife's friend her sister is terrible with animals and barely looks after their dogs so the kitten's chances aren't the best if she stays with them.... so looks like I'm in for a few weeks of my cats hating me lol

That's a cute little kitty. Good luck with her.

Wife's been texting. Apparently Tux is all over the house today. He was hanging by the door when the dogs were outside, jumped up on the stove (thankfully not on) and had to get pushed to get off, ran through the living room a bunch of times moving toys around. And the other cats are just following him around watching him like he's the most fascinating thing they've ever seen.

Sounds like he's found his comfort zone.

that's great that he's settling in...... and even better that the other cats aren't being dicks to him lol

I'm hoping the kitten isn't too far gone.... kinda expecting the worse but sure she'll be ok.... hard part with fostering is giving them up after.... tough not to get attached to them....

Yeah, I'm actually surprised our boy Alvin is being super nice to him. He's been an absolute asshole to everybody else that's come into the house after him. Like, to the point when the pups were babies he'd just walk up to them and smack the shit out of them for no reason while yowling. Little fucker.

Hope she's able to be nursed to health.

I wouldn't be able to foster. I don't have the emotional make-up for it. For me, pets are for life. I'm glad there's folks like you that can do it though. One of ours stayed in a pet foster home for a time when she had a batch of kittens before we met her. She's one of the best behaved cats we've ever known so we're super grateful for that foster family.
