I haven't seen the American version of the office, but I loved the original. Pretty sure there wasn't a character called toby.

I think the UK and the American versions of the office each have their strengths.

The UK version did what UK shows can do and US shows can't. They were incredibly successful at telling a compact and tight story, causing massive cringe moments while they did it, and making everyone feel slightly better about their own lives while still tugging at the heart strings from time to time.

The US version took off, became successful enough they wouldn't let it die, then actually managed to hold together a fairly coherent life-like experience that actually grew to the point you felt like you really knew these people from all the years spent together. Those finale episodes were tear-jerkingly great just for the simple fact that you had all that experience with them and you knew this was it. Add on that they didn't completely botch the landing, and it'll live on as a true classic.

Comparing Ricky Gervais and Steve Carrel isn't really the point. They each did a slightly different twist on a basic character, and each were surrounded by a stupendous cast. Steve had the benefit of many more years and many more people over the course of those years to build the connections. Ricky is . . . well, Ricky.

Pam and Jim vs Dawn and Tim is more the heart of either show. And there's arguments to be made for both.

I can't take a hard line, but if someone gave me a gun and two bullets and stuck me in a room with Hilter, Stalin and Toby, I'd shoot Toby twice.

Wait, I meant if someone held a gun on me and forced me to choose, I'd probably lean towards the UK for the simple fact that I knew it for YEARS before I watched any of the American The Office. I'd still rather have both of them available, which is why we own full box sets for both and the specials for the UK version.

Nah, I can think of plenty of shows remade in the usa that were absolutely ruined, inbetweeners, it crowd, my family, cold feet, red dwarf, the young ones, fawlty towers, till death us do part, etc, which is why I didn't bother watching the usa office, I will check it out though. Of course, the British have remade and ruined a few usa shows as well.

Just when I think we're blood brothers, you go and state something like this that is so me, it's uncanny... Carell is a steaming pile of dung, and if "Toby" is about that crapshow, I guess I'm definitely too boomer for this thread.

What US show was a remake of The Young Ones? I have to know because, I have every stoopid episode of the UK version on VCR and then bought them on DVD.... love the Young Ones!!!
I can't think of any US show that was similar?

It was called " oh no, not them" they made a pilot episode, it was so bad it didn't get aired and was subsequently dropped.

I just finished rewatching the whole series on Netflix, and I realized I never watched the show after Carrell left, but there were some pretty classic moments in the last couple seasons.

Sorry about the layoff, Mike. That had to be a shitty day.

I didnt really get into bottom, I didnt think it was quite in the same league as the young ones, but the fights were hilarious.

They also made a series called filthy rich and catflap, don't know if you saw it, but it really wasn't great and pretty much bombed.

Anybody else get all excited watching Castle Rock with the dude strapped to the bed and Annie picks up the hammer saying she knows pain? I was all, "here we go! HERE WE GO!"

And then she doubled down.

Pops's moment was very, VERY Steven King. Going to glory? No, fuck you.

Show is killing it. Sometimes literally.

EDIT: Um, WTF? Coulda swore this went in the TV show thread.
