I picked this up as a fancy metronome for practice sessions, but I'm really impressed with the sound quality and tweakability of the kits in this lil guy. Relatively cheap for what it does too.
One of those drum machine dealies might be good, and less of a learning curve if you go that route.
Using a DAW to sequence drum samples will open up a lot more options though. You just need a drum plugin and some drag and drop midi grooves. Oh, and an MP3/wav player to run into the PA for live.

Much cooler to use a full computer live, so you get to do a fifteen minute standup routine while your techs try to figure out what went down.
Something about using a computer live just doesn't jive with me, even if all the music is made on a computer or the drum machine/file player you're using is essentially a specialized computer.

Lots of the bigger boys are doing it now, controlling everything from the lights to the backup sounds, but I've been in IT long enough to know what Devi went through in that video is inevitable at some point. So you're either the type that can roll with being fucked, like him, or you don't trust the computer.

I'm sure if you look you could find Midi files for drums for lots of popular songs online that could at least get you in the ball park, and if you use a DAW like Logic you can import the midi file and run it through something like EZ Drummer, I wouldn't be surprised if you could run it in to the built in Logic drummer.
If not, I think you'll be stuck programming the beats

I'm surprised they didn't have a backup plan in place.
I have a mp3 player with all the synth parts I can fire up if all else fails. It's not ideal but it will finish the set just fine.
I am honestly more worried about tube failure or string breakage on stage than with synth/track issues, these are pretty fast and easy to recover from as long as you plan things ahead.
