Question for those that work from home...

For those of you that have a home office/guitar room.. do you guys find it hard to want to play guitar when you get off work and those guitars are in the same room you just spent 9 hours in? Its been insane for me the second the close hits done time.. i leave this office and dont want to think about it again til the next morning.

So much so im moving my desk to another room in hopes I might want to play guitar when i finish up.

I only work from home from Fridays but, it's still better than being at the office!

But I feel for you bro. I think having your gear and work space separate, is a good idea.

I wont admit it to my boss, but i miss the office a little bit. But its not an option the office is now 800 miles away.

Are you able to work on a laptop? Maybe you can work at the local library or coffee shop for a change?

I'd rather be at the office. I'm not the work from home type. I need to have separated spaces for work and life.

My wife works from home once a week. She likes it but it's tricky for her too.

ive made it a habit of getting showered and dressed every day, so luckily i dont have that problem.

I can do that, I might need to do that for a day or two every so often

I work out of my home office, pretty new to it though. I am working for myself, so any time spent dicking around is basically costing me money. I would say have been F'ing around a lot less compared to when I used to work for the man in the office. It also affords me the ability to work some random hours.

Anyway, my office and music room are two separate rooms in the house - I think that helps me focus when I am working, and have fun when I decide to have fun. I track the hours I put in for each client, and I sometimes work on up to 4 different companies' projects a day - aka there's a natural break in finishing up one project and moving on to the next. It's awesome to be able take a little break from the work, walk down the hall, fire up an amp, pick out a guitar to plug in, record a cool loop, and riff out for 20 minutes or so. I could even argue that having those breaks makes me more productive when I get back to work. The separation really works for me. I tried keeping a guitar in the office, had to cancel that real quick.

oh man. when i worked from home, i played all the time. DURING the day.

that said, i kept my work upstairs, and the amps downstairs. sometimes the coffee break? spark up the amp. lunchtime? spark up the amp. slow period? you get my drift. i used it as a way to practice MORE.

i know people sometimes think 'how can you be productive if you're playing?'- but my answer to that is how can i be productive if i'm just sitting there? sometimes there's just shit to do. so i'd fill it with something i WANT to do with no penalty. and if i don't suck and try to rip off my employer, and put in 8 hours, sometimes i work til 6 having started at 7 am. but the critical aspect is not being an asshole- and my boss knew at the time that i did it, and he ENCOURAGED it so i felt like during the times that were chaos, i'd be all in. totally worked.

separate yourself from the idea that work is GOOD and playing music is BAD and pick up your guitar and noodle while you're reviewing work. sometimes you get distracted-- but on the whole, i'd bet on the net you'd be way more stoked to play that guitar than be thinking it's some guilt inducer! just long as you put back in, man... it's such a great balance if you have the discipline to strike it.

I'm used to it by now, I've been doing the telecommuting thing for years and at this point I just don't care. Having the guitars around means I can jam in between work tasks, which is a nice break. And once I am done for the day I shut off the laptop and it's like it's not even there and I can play for hours.

What's killing me right now is that even though I live in PA I am still working West Coast hours so I am working 11a-8p. I hate to work this late in the day. Hopefully I will be able to adjust my hours a bit next year...

I've been working from home pretty much exclusively for about 6 years, where "home" has been 3 different places already. Keeping focused is a big challenge, but I guess in a way I've been lucky that for most of that time the work's been fine and fun, so *that* is not the reason I have not been playing much. Some very low moods, two kids, wife's illness and moving country on the other hand...
I'm with Billy on this. I've got an acoustic in my office with me for the moment, and it's just nice to grab and jam for a bit while waiting for something like a compile. It just takes the brain away and refreshes it for some more deep thought when the next bit comes around.

Now of course, I've got a PRS MT-15 and Laney IRT Studio coming in today, so there *may* be slightly more distractions...

I should add to this I do pick up the guitar while I am working. but its not like I can switch to the recording computer lay down some tracks and swtich back to work mode. But when the day is done i just want out of this room. Im hoping when I get the office moved and the jam room separated it will help.

Yeah, I dont exactly work from home, but when I have guitars at work, I can be pretty productive both ways. Breaks the day up.
My take is this.
If youre exhausting your ass off with work for a full day & THEN you wanna switch over... I think thats when you need a different space.
