Our Ole Hound Passed Away

Post by linthat22 »

Woke up this morning to quiet house when we all lumbered downstairs. First thought was I let the dog out while sleep walking, but after scouring the house we honed in on her room. The wife and I walked in and the bed she slept on was in shambles as always, but then it dawned on my wife to raise the bed sheet. Sure enough, there was Lilian underneath the sheets passed away. Rigor mortis had already set in and she was still warm, was quite a surreal moment.

We called in our five year old daughter, because she didn't know what was going on and of course it hit her hard. That ole gal looked at our daughter as the pup she never had, was pretty much her shadow.

Needless to say, finding Lily at 5:45 and starting to dig the hole around 6:30 wasn't what I had in mind for today. But in the end, I was able to give her one final kiss, say a prayer, and bury her. She was 15-16 years old and the most gentle dog we ever could've had.

Thank you guys for the support. Our daughter wanted to buy flowers to put over her spot, which I thought was sweet. We never had to deal with death, so it's surprising what her instincts were.

I think in a year's time or so, we'll plant a tree over where she's buried.

So sorry. On the bright side for you and your daughter, she passed in the night in her own bed and you didn't have to go through the decision making process of whether her life was worth living. I realize that's small comfort when it happens, but at least it's something.

It sounds like she had a good long life with a loving family. Mourn her today and remember the good times going forward. Having lost two pets this year already, I know the sting, and the comfort of the pleasant memories. It sucks they leave us so fast, but they make up for it with giving love in a way most people never could. My thoughts are with you, man.

I appreciate it and totally agree. I had to put a cat down when I was 13 and definitely prefer this way.

Again, thank you everyone for the kind comments.

And yes, she was a gentle gal who made quite an impression on us and our little girl.

We rescued her from an abusive home where she lost her litter of pups due to malnutrition and she was leery of me for awhile. Somehow she knew was the wife was pregnant before any of us and took to our daughter immediately.

She was basically our daughter's shadow since she was born; as mentioned before. Just an all around great hound.

Thank you everyone again! I appreciate it.

We did the same thing when one of our dogs, Ruby, passed away a few years ago. We put a flower garden over her grave and every year we plant more flowers in "Ruby's Garden".

So sorry for your loss, but it sounds like you gave her a good life, which is all you can do. Hopefully your daughter doesn't take it too hard, she was obviously very attached to her. Losing a dog is so hard because they are part of the family. We lost one of our dogs over a year ago, and from time to time I still find myself looking for him in the spots where he used to sleep.

I am so sorry my dude. Our pets are our family members and their loss is extremely painful. It's one of those situations where you have to say she made your lives happier and you made her life happier. It's unfortunate they have a shorter timeline than us, but it is the time spent together that matters. Sounds like you guys had a really great time together.
