Just a quick update....

Mom is still in ICU and progressing slowly. They have most things under control. But she is still far from being out of the woods. Overall she is alert and awake. But also very tired. We are basically camping out here with her.

Overall things are better than they were on Monday. But we're still riding the razors edge.

Man that is scary shit. Sending positive vibes your way! My Dad had a heart attack in front of me a few years ago and I thought we were going to lose him right there so I understand the fear. Wishing for a speedy recovery!

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I'm gutted.

We're about to have a conversation with Mom about money, insurance, final exspenses and her personal wishes. They have done end of life planning. So we are going over the details.

I'm sorry to hear that. This is the hard part. :(

Is she planning on spending the rest of her time at home?

Is your Dad still with us/in the picture? If so, he needs all the help you can offer. He will basically give his life to keep her comfortable. Don't be afraid to call an in-home care company. Get a nurse in there at night so he can go to bed.

If you need any advice, PM me. We can talk on the phone.

Thanks again guys.

Now for a update...

Earlier this morning the ICU Dr. explained that they are out of options for treatment. Mom's body has pretty much stopped responding to everything they have tried to clear the fluid out of her lungs. She has been in heart failure the whole way. Along with having A-Fib, COPD/Emphysema, her blood CO2 is going through the roof. Basically, her vascular system is quitting on her. That said, the dr. hasn't told her what he told us. So, a little after lunch, the palliative nurse came in to talk to us about everything. She made it clear to Mom that this situation isn't going to improve and realistically, with in-home care, we are looking at months. Not years. So in the face of this all, Mom has decided that she wants to at least try to get around the ICU to see if she can have some independence when she gets home. She wants to prove to herself that her body can't handle it. Either way, whether this is foolish or not, we are going to support her decision. We(and the nurse) made it clear that she could very well fall on her face and croak. Which she accepts. So, another 24hours in ICU to determine this and then we will see what tomorrow brings.

She's tough and wants to keep fighting.

Gene: Yes, Dad is here and present. As of this moment, we are still a fully intact family and it feels good. That said, I may have some financial questions for you in the next day or so as things become more clear. Not to mention some questions about in home care. But we haven't quite arrived there yet.

Finally, this conversation today has helped me understand why I am such a headstrong, stubborn person. I now clearly see where I get it from. My mother has always been the strongest person I've ever known. Today, she proved yet again. In spades.

TP I held an administrative position at a home care agency in the late 90s dealing with billing, admissions, discharges, etc. We had clients in both MN and ND and there were huge differences between the two states regarding any sort of government funded home care. We also dealt with private pay as well as long term care insurance policies as they related to home care and assisted living.

I won't get into all the details here but if interested shoot me a PM and I'll get back to you tonight. Things may have changed a lot in the past 20 years but I can share with you what I learned and experienced.
