This is the easiest law to circumvent ever. All that is needed is for producers, managers etc to register as a sole proprietor/dba, that way you will be hiring service a company and not an individual so employment rights don't apply. Setting up a dba takes a few minutes and it's a good idea anyway, to protect personal assets in case of a lawsuit or bankruptcy of the business (this forum is set up that way). It won't crush a damn thing.
For the Uber/Lyft drivers it's a good thing.

While I agree with you for full time employees... in some cases...I dunno... if your pay is directly tied to the hours you put in and the revenue you make in that time there should be some sort of limit... because why should Uber pay you for time you didn't work and not earn for the company? and then how would they assess how much money you would have made if you did work that day or days?
some jobs have benefits, but they also have draw backs.... it's up to you to work there or not....

there is a lot of unfounded rage against all things CA. seems like any time they are planning to pass or pass a law you hear from the media that is going to be the end of the world. And yet the state's economy is still doing much better than a majority of the other countries on the planet.

This will not affect the music industry in the way that the author describes....
Uber and Lyft are making hundreds-of-billions of dollars every year. HUNDREDS-OF-BILLIONS!!!!!!
They have over 40,000 registered drivers in the NYC Metro area alone - of that, about 20-25,000 are on the road each day and Uber is in every city and town around the world.
When Uber first started, they offered drivers twice what a driver could make working for a limo company or yellow cab service.
They paid their drivers twice the amount of a normal ride, while charging the passenger the normal cost.
For the first two years, Uber and Lyft were operating at a loss because, they needed drivers to do their work and at double the wages, Uber and Lyft got them.
Now, that Uber and Lyft are household names, they cut driver wages to LESS than what they would earn working for a regular car service or yellow cab company.
However, Uber and Lyft provide so much work, the drivers can stay busy all day long.
While the drivers may have more work, they are making less money and they want the benefits that Uber and Lyft can clearly afford.
Drivers work for Uber and Lyft up to 12 hours a day, and they can work 7 days a week, 365 days a year if they choose.
The law was passed to get the drivers health coverage and standard benefits that they deserve.
When a band hires a producer, engineer, etc., to record an album, you are doing so on the short term... 2 weeks to a few months.
The law is not meant to protect short term, freelance workers.
If the producer, engineer, etc, is employed full time, at a studio or at a record label, then they deserve health benefits, paid time off, etc.
Taxi and limo drivers are making Uber and Lyft BILLIONS and if the drivers are putting in the hours, they deserve the same benefits as everyone else.
