That’s what happens when you get sacked twenty times per game. It’s a bummer.

in all reality - all NFL players should have a plan to be self sufficient before they are 30 - most don't even last that long in the NFL.
Make the money - open a business/something - get out of the sport while you body still functions.

Peyton has some pretty big shoes to fill
That's OK, as a lions fan I have plenty of experience w players retiring way too early so this isn't brand new territory.

Hell yeah.
Get your money and get away from that dumpster fire before you wind up with brain damage.
Just wait until these MMA guys are 20 years removed from their careers. I hope the cash is worth having the brain power of a bag of chips when you’re 55

Re: WOW Andrew luck retiring from the NFL
Shocker! The retirement was leaked during the preseason game and the fans booed him on his way out. I don't agree with booing your own team, never understood that, but I would be pissed if I were a Colts fan too.
Re: WOW Andrew luck retiring from the NFL
I honestly expected that they would announce this week that the injury was worse than previously thought and that he'd miss half the season. Certainly didn't see this coming. Roughly 2,000 people were in the stands when he walked out and some were booing/yelling/taking off their Luck jersey's. In my opinion, those aren't true fans and it showed a complete lack of respect for what he gave to the team. He got his ass repeatedly handed to him because management failed to protect him and it took a toll. I think he stuck around longer than most would have simply because he's an honorable person. I hate to see him go, but I understand the decision. He's smart, he's secure and he no longer has to worry about becoming an NFL health statistic. Good for him.
My biggest beef about the whole thing is with Adam Schefter. What a dick. He couldn't let Andrew announce his retirement in a way that would have been fitting. Let the guy walk off the field with dignity and then announce your attention grabbing "exclusive and breaking" story just before he hits the podium. Let's put Schefter under center for a few plays and see what happens...

Good on ya. Must be disappointing all the same. As for Shefter, he was just doing his job. Being the first to know, first to report is how he gets paid. It's a shame I agree.

I get it, but it's still annoying. "You heard it here first". "We were the first to tell you". "Exclusive", etc. It's as though the story is a distant second to the self-promotion and perceived exclusivity. I have never chosen a news source simply because they "break" stories. I guess that is important to some.
Losing Andrew is certainly disappointing. Especially when we look to have a pretty good supporting roster and coaching staff. He was a hell of a talent. But, it would have been more disappointing to watch him struggle because of repeated injuries that failed to heal. We aren't going to the Super Bowl this season, but it should still be fun to watch. Beer and Nachos and Chili and football. It will be cold soon - what the hell else would I be doing

Stanford produces intelligent individuals. I wish I could "work" for 7 years, show up at the office roughly 60% of the time, never meeting expectations or company goals, obtain subpar performance reviews, and then retire a multi-millionaire.

I'm not sure that's a fair characterization of Luck's efforts for the team. I think he gave them all that anyone could have reasonably expected and, given the lack of protection early in his career, stayed in the pocket (so to speak) longer than was reasonable. He was repeatedly pummeled and, IMHO, put everything he had into the effort. I don't know how many other QB's would have stayed as long...

not sure of that - can't think of any other quarterbacks with his proven potential leaving so early while they still had the full confidence of their team..........

Luck never had a good enough O-Line. They always seemed to give up a big sack at the worst times.

He may have the full confidence, but maybe not the full ability. He's always seemed like the type of player that would never be satisified - and would feel he was letting down the team, if he couldn't give 100%. I have no insight, but it just seems like there is more to this. Maybe the injury is much worse than anyone is saying. Maybe there are other health issues. I don't know. Regardless, it's unfortunate...

You're obviously much closer to the issue, being a hometown fan, so it's interesting to get your take on this.
I should have thrown a smiley in, I'm basically joking - and it's more of an only-in-the-NFL kinda statement. From an outsider perspective, this guy was supposed to be the messiah. Suck for Luck, remember? The Colts tanked a whole season and turned their back on Manning to get him. So I guess anything short of a ring would have been disappointing, but I can think of a number of guys who played behind shitty O lines with crap offensive coordinators that got blasted early on but fought thru it, lasted longer than 7 years, were not the top overall pick, made more pro bowls, won more playoff games / championships, and had a better ROI for the team, etc. I mean, most good running backs last longer than 7 years...

Yep. Look at your best quarterbacks in history. Their O-Lines are always the best in the biz. Shit, I have a Jeff Saturday jersey from back when the Colts won the Superbowl

It's all good. I'm closer to it geographically, but I'm really just a casual football fan. I root for the home team, but rarely watch football for the sake of just watching a game. I enjoy it, but lose interest if it's not "my" team. Your points are valid - and another reason why I think there's more to it. It could be as easy as "I'm beat to hell, I hurt and my family is more important". Who knows - time will tell, I guess.

The average NFL career is 5.4 years. It's about 2 years longer for quarterbacks. It's 11 years for Pro Bowlers, however there are next to no running backs that make it 7 years anymore. The average RB career is 2.5 years. I can't find data specifically for the career length of RBs factoring in first round picks, starters, pro bowlers etc. But I'm sure I could come up with a number when I have some time. I'd bet it's closer to 4 years than 8.

While I'm sure these numbers are accurate - I think in reality they are heavily skewed.
I'm not sure when they start 'counting' an NFL career - but if it is everyone they sign to a contract at the beginning of training camp - then there are (90 - 53) 37 players for EACH team that don't even make it to the first regular season game.
I'll admit - I don't know how they count the practice squad, or when an NFL career starts - but they are tons of players that wash out before they really even get started.
Your comment about starters, pro bowlers, etc is very relevant to the discussion.
Re: WOW Andrew luck retiring from the NFL
As the long term effects of concussions become clearer, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw this type of thing start happening more often. There will always be warrior types who will play until their body completely breaks down and they can't play anymore, but I think we will start seeing more players retire while they are still in one piece so that they can enjoy the rest of their life.
We as fans would like to think that these guys should play until they can't, but he has a family to think about.

The guy gave up his body and couldn't take it anymore. He has taken more physical abuse than any of us could understand. Any equivalences to the real world do not apply since the NFL is hardly the real world.
