Post by Tortuga »

Some of you guys must have had access at one point or another to the almighty Demento  My friends and I used to catch the show Sunday nights on the Mighty KMET 94.7 back in the late 70's - made for great laffs at school the next day :D

He was still around in the early 80s. Can remember listening to his show in the car on the way home from my grandparents house in Culver City. I think it was KLOS, 95.5 Classic Rock, but I could be mistaking that for Mark and Brian. :hmm:

 You don't hear any comedy music on the radio anymore.
I remember hearing just about all those songs, on Dr. Demento and the Crusher, by the Cramps.

Yeah I think you are mistaking it for Mark and Brian. That was the longest running morning radio show in US history. I think they hit their 30 year mark around 2010 which was when Mark tanked the show, “retired” to do a failed podcast with his wife out of his home, and then returned to 100.3 where all the washed up KLOS dj’s went to die... as the station is now Christian Music.

Mark and Brian didn't start with KLOS until '87ish.

Demento's prime years were behind him at that point - he was biggest from the mid-70s until '82 or so.

Totally different shows. Dr Demento played crazy tunes from every era of recorded music, and had a great, silly voice. Mark & Brian started as pranksters, making hilarious phony calls to people & places on-air, without telling the other party that they were on the radio. I specifically remember them calling Buckingham Palace over and over, week after week, posing as various celebrities, politicians, etc., trying like hell to get any of the Royals on the phone. Funny, yes - but a huge no-no that got them into trouble after a couple years. They'd built a huge following by then, and it carried them for years as they tried other forms of comedy on the radio. Their spoof songs were awesome, too.

I know Mark and Brian are a different show than Demento! I was just trying to remember the radio station that played Demento, and KLOS popped into my head because M&B. Also, in 1987, I was eleven.

They played fish heads on the radio a few weeks ago. It was awesome. We used to sing it at sail school as the fish heads floated by.
